Yeah. To have offensive success against pbf, a fighter needs to be inventive - to break with convention. Especially a fighter without a height advantage who will find his right hand , at least a conventionally thrown one, largely useless.

I thought Cotto did a decent job at it. Obviously not good enough. But he managed to land more than 20% of his shots, which is far better than the norm. And besides the right hand to the body he landed, he also managed to land his left to the bkdy by turnkng it under - breaking with convention and going around pbf's defense - not taking it head on - the direction for which it's designed.

The other key for cotto was his willingness, though not often enough, to punch with mayweather, and not simply to wait out pbf's barrages.

I thought Cotto would punch Floyd's arms like he did to Silvio Branco.

Yeah I wonder why he didn't just kept punching that left arm every time Mayweather shoulder roll...just to see if he could dislocate it or something.

    Yep. Lewis beat Vitali by being able to lean in and punch with him. A few other things besides, but the basic format was being able to match him physically and overcome his awkwardness for long enough to get his own shots off.}

Every other fighter after that thought they could pressurize him into quitting or wear him down. They all got their arses burst.

Its the same with Floyd. Pressure alone won't do it. If you are as tall or taller than Floyd then you might be able to match him, like Oscar did, like Saddler would have, like Margarito would have {only for a few rounds in Margaritos case

You need to take stock of his unique style. Vitali is more unorthodox, Floyd is more refined, but both are awkward in their own way.

So, as you put it, you need to break with convention, you need to get out of a groove and try something new. Hatton and Cotto didn't do that and Mosley didn't either. I bet Cotto never threw one single dedicated right hand to the spine. If he threw the right it was only cos he threw the left before it.

You need to step in, feint a right hand to the head and then drop it down to the body. It needs to be one big right hand. When he straightens up to protect his side, then you can reintroduce the orthodox approach.

Duran would have understood this and been fluid enough to execute it. Chavez would have not had the same power as Duran {at 147} or Saddler {at 130} but he would have understood the basic concept of targeting unprotected areas and disposing of with convention or tradition.

I do think you can train a fighter too much, or too little....."Oh, keep your hands up...throw more jabs.....we're winning......stay on top now.....he's tired.....did I mention to throw more jabs"......

    Meh.
Mayweather is like a nickel that fell down the grid. You need to fish him out before you can spend him. You need to bring him out of that awkward stance and straighten him up first, and I think the right hand to the spine is the ticket.

Shit it's 2:25 in the morning and this thread is still going strong!!! :giggle:

    For what it's worth....

I thought Floyd won 8-4, possibly 9-3 but although the scores weren't close, the fight was in parts.

I think that floyd made it a harder fight than it needed to be. I left before the post-fight comments and so I don't know what his excuse is (if he has one)...but Floyd in the middle rounds seemed to be trying to rope-a-dope Cotto, and this wasn't working as well as it should due to his slightly diminished reflexes. It gave Cotto the opportunity to win rounds.

Cotto gave him a hard fight though, to his (Cotto's) credit. I wasn't expecting it to be competitive and it was. Cotto was all business.

Floyd was clearly the better fighter, but he seemed careless somewhat to me.

    Bottomline is:

    Father time is a bitch!

This. A guy can win a fight 120-108 and be perilously close to defeat, or he can win 115-113 and never so much as break a heavy sweat.

At one point, Floyd was sat in his corner with a fat bloody nose, his mouth open, a vacant look on his face and a large white hankie on his head.

The scores say he won easily. His face said he was in a fight and had a very hards nights work.

A bit like Chisora vs Vitali 118-110 did not tell the story at all.

    Good observation Sly.:bears:

Yup, Floyd wasn't his usual comfortable self in there. Cotto made his work for the win.

Cotto is better than I gave him credit for. At rounds 7-8 it was anyone's fight.

Credit to Floyd for coming on strong in the latter rounds and closing it out like a champion should.

Floyd once again showed heart. He certainly had to dig a little deep to get through this one with his "0" intact.

Fraud F*ckweather got badly exposed today. Even his biggest asslickers like Slystaff are seeing why this faggot motherf*cker avoided a prime Cotto. He handpicked what he presumed was a dead and buried Cotto with nothing left and even still looked like sh*t, getting his face bloodied and all and leaving his ribs and body open for Cotto who was too stupid and shot to see the openings.
It also shows why Fraud Cuntweather wants nothing to do with Pacquiao.

Fraud F*ckweather is an overrated scrub beater. He thought Cotto was gonna be more shot but got surprised. Fraud is done! After the scare he got tonight, now his balls will stay in his purse and find the smallest safest bum to fight.

Mayweather jr beat up a (still) good fighter and lost a few rounds. Now panzy is creaming himself. Pretyy amusing. It was a good, entertaining fight. If mayweather jr would have moved more and stayed off the ropes panzy and a few other assholes would be crying and claiming it was boring. Go figure. As I've said before cotto would give him a harder fight and have more success than pacquiao would

    Floyd 8-4, more likely 9-3.

    Cruised that fight.

Beat Cotto up on the inside and as soon as Cotto started to cime on, Floyd got on the outside and beat him up some more.

make no mistake Floyd couldve fought on th outside from the start and won nealry every round.

    Was a god fight.
