Hafta disagree there REED muh man. I agree Floyd loses to Thurman and Spence, but would still beat guys as basic as Porter and Garcia.

I think Floyd made himself look worse than he is from the sheer lack of respect he gave to Conor. He knew he had no chance and pretty much fought like it. He didn't come out of second gear. Compare with to the Floyd that fought Pacquiao or even Berto, there was a world of difference - Floyd was still extremely sharp and focused in those fights.

Good post. It's the whole underdog syndrome. If a guy does better than you expect, you tend to give him undue credit and can mistake the surpassing expecations for actually winning.

Yeah, Conor did better than expected, but ultimately Floyd still walked him and down and stopped him with ease - age 40, retired, and 20 pounds lighter.

I've been saying this on this thread from the beginning....MMA guys don't have the same chin as boxers ( how could they) and that MMA power will not translate to boxing.

To answer your question, he's definitely good enough to pick up a British title. If a former footballer in Curtis Woodhouse can pick up a Lonsdale belt (albeit after suffering some failed attempts and bad defeats prior to finally winning it), then I don't see why Conor couldn't. Even if there is somebody genuinely good at that level you can generally wait for them to move on, they don't stick around for long and not many fighters tend to do the three-defence thing to keep the belt permanently anymore.

 

This is exactly my line of thought Ugo, that's why I said it;s so surprising coming from Hut. Hut generally appreciates solid, technical boxing and hates basic amateur boxing like Khan.

He's praising Conor for outhustling a completely inactive Floyd for a couple of rounds, with basic amateur boxing, youth, and reach - just like Khan would have.

Khan would shoe shine his way to a few early rounds with Floyd too, then as soon as Floyd settled in, he'd absolutely school Khan.

But that chance is very slim. Khan has been clocked by Canelo and Garcia. McGregor's power isn't on par with either of those guys.

I'd say he's probably national level though. He might be able to beat some British level boxers, if he worked on his stamina, but he would lose to someone like Eggington. He'd also lose to a continental level fighter like Van Heerden.

I know I'm ragging on McGregor, but the ironic thing is I think he's probably the best MMA fighter in the world, and my favourite fighter to watch in the UFC. His most recent 3 fights in the UFC were all really fun to watch.

I just don't like his persona, and I think Hut is overrating his boxing ability to an obscene degree.

What's also ironic is he kind of flies the flag for boxing in the UFC in a way. He basically outboxes guys and uses solid amateur boxing to completely dominate guys who don't know how to box. What's what I've found fun to watch.

 

Although he slapped Paulie around in the championship rounds, which surprised me, what surprised me just as much is he looked fucking horrible apart from that one nice left cross. Awful slappy arm punches and rabbit punches.

Let's be honest, MMA groupies are butt hurt because 3-4 years ago they predicted that boxing would be dead by now.

Fast forward, Rousey gets exposed as a total fraud, Jones is a chronic juicer, and Conor proves once and for all that a striker can't fuck with a boxer.

It's a reality check for how well McGregor really did.

The whole MMA community thought if Floyd won he'd at least win by "running away away with his pillow fists". He didn't, he walked down a much bigger, younger man, and beat the fuck out of him, without even getting out of second gear. Floyd looked like he'd been for a jog and didn't have a mark on him.

That was the BIGGEST shock to the MMA community. They were SURE that Floyd would run. That's the part that REALLY hurt their ego.

 

Well, honestly, the MMA community was delusional in that respect. But on the other hand. Most of the boxing community thought that Floyd would blow right through him without getting hit by a single meaningful punch.

I guess both fighters exceeded our expectations.
