Arturo Santos Reyes of Mexico was a popular name during the Olympics. He turned pro in June with a third round knockout. Couldn't find a link in English. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=499179&cat=boxer
A couple French boxers already turned pro: Jerome Thomas: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=477112&cat=boxer Daouda Sow: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=499665&cat=boxer
I'll bump this one...Sadam Ali makes his television debut tonight on FNF. And French Olympian Khedafi Djelkhir is fighting on the Tua-Barrett card Saturday night.
I think it's time to start updating this thread again. Saw Vyacheslov Glazkov's last fight from earlier this month on Comcast. Was his first in the States, taking on a short, thick, musclar 41 year old American Mike Brown...needless to say, not much of an opponent, but just his 6th pro fight. Glazkov looked alright. 6'3, 219 for the bout. Looked strong for that size, with some power. A little deliberate in his movement, not the quickest feet. Decent hand speed, varied a bit with the punch selection, solid repetoire, used the left hook a bit to go along with the right hand. Started patiently, didn't throw a lot to begin the fight. Solid jab, had some decent placement with it. Hit Brown with three straight jabs in the third round, short, hard, right on the button...jarrred Brown a bit moments before he hurt him with a sweeping hook that backed him into the ropes and brought on a follow up volley of punches that brought the ref in. Looped his power punches a bit when he loaded up on them. Couldn't find a video of it on the web, but here's a video of his pro debut, a year ago. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pgaQyNR5yls&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pgaQyNR5yls&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Gold medalist from the Dominican Republic, Felix Diaz was also on the card in what was also his 6th pro fight. Short southpaw, at 5'5, weighed 146 1/2 (and looking at his boxrec resume, looks like he's had a lot of weight fluctuation so far in his career with weights of 140, 149, 140, 144 and 146 1/2). Was in against Brockerick Antoine, a 5'11 lefty. The fight went 8, Diaz won by stoppage, though lookedl ike Antoine was cut over his lead right eye by a clash of heads and the fight was stopped early in the 8th with blood flowing from the cut. Not a real consistent effort from Diaz. Looked to be a bit of a flurry fighter. Walked in more in the early rounds, not as much in rounds three and four, where he allowed Antoine to do some decent work (and got in some nice punches to the body). Antoine appeared to be cut from a bad clash of heads, and Diaz came out with a lot more pressure in the fifth, put Antoine on the defensive and against the ropes, did some decent work when he got closer, but by the sixth and seventh rounds his hands were low and he was looking to do a lot more pot-shotting, primarily with his left hand. Diaz did not use the jab a great deal, pawed with it a lot of the times when he did put it out, and looked for spots to throw his overhand left. When he did let his hands go, he showed he could punch in bunches. Pretty good hand speed, although maybe left some questions about power...although Antoine had never been stopped before. Waited too long to let his hands go at times, not getting off first...got caught reaching with right hook from Antoine as he attempted left to the body from distance. Video of his second pro fight, from FNF: <object width="480" height="266"><param name="movie" value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/video/xak1nf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/video/xak1nf" width="480" height="266" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed></object>
It's old news now but apparently the DeGale and Mayweather sparring session never happened because Floyd felt James was too big for him, so Floyd ended up sparring and chatting shit to some light hitting bum from Hayes instead.
Chakhkiev's pro debut has been replayed in english on SUN network recently. They are doing several Euro cards from last year recently. He is a strong guy, looked decent, but maybe a little small for cruiser...looked like he was more suited for 190 lbs. Good everything, but squares up too much...maybe.
Yeah, he looked pretty good offensively. Moved around the ring well, pretty light on his fight. Good handspeed, nice assortment of punches, put them together well. Stepped into a nice right hand that produced the knockdown in the first round. His record suggests there may be some questions about his power, though, as he's been the distance 4 of his 8 fights. Edmonds was clearly a smaller guy, brought up from 140 (and was only 142 at the fight). Ali's 5'9, he was 135 in the Olympics, but has been as high as 151, where he weighed for a fight in May...was 145 last night. One concern I'd have going forward as he steps up in class is his chin...it's a little high. Here's video of his second pro fight: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/c81HNB-JUDc&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/c81HNB-JUDc&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Yeah. Listed at 6'0, solidly built, a lot of muscle...not great speed, will have to see about his conditioning as he moves up in class and starts going more rounds. As to be expected with his size and build, a bit of a brawler. Southpaw, keeps his hands up relatively well, solid defense, not a great deal use for his right jab, prefers beginning things with his left hand. Has 5 knockouts in 6 fights, and looks to have solid power and pretty heavy hands. There's some videos of his fights (if you search youtube for 'Rachim Tschachkijew') up at Universum's youtube destination (http://www.youtube.com/user/UBPboxing#g/c/57723DA462FE4899)... here's video of the first three rounds of his last fight, against Lukasz Rusiewicz, which he won via UD 6: <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0di8M32A5JA&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0di8M32A5JA&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Khedafi Djelkhir, french featherweight who fought and lost to Vasyl Lomachenko at the last Olympics (although he did beat American Raynell Williams and Mexican Arturo Santos Reyes). He improved to 7-0, with 6 KO's, last night on the Tua-Barrett pay per view card with a first round stoppage. Didn't order that fight, but here's some video of him in his pro debut (first round knockout with a left to the body): <object width="480" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/video/xbw2j9"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.dailymotion.com/swf/video/xbw2j9" width="480" height="360" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed></object>
Darley Perez, 26 year old Colombian fighter who lost to eventual lightweight gold medalist Alexei Tischenko. He fought 12 times last year, three times so far in this one. His record stands at 15-0, 13 KO's...most of his fights have come at 135, though he weighed 140 for his last bout. Video of his first round knockout of Patricio Antonio Pedrero from last November: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/krtnBMdRRrM&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/krtnBMdRRrM&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Video of his fifth round stoppage of Pascual Salgado in March: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rwrZd_gBMzs&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rwrZd_gBMzs&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Kubrat Pulev, Bulgarian heavyweight, lost in a first round match at the Olympics. As a pro, he's 8-0 with 5 KO's. Four fights so far this year, including a 4th round stoppage of Matt Skelton and a TKO2 over Danny Batchelder (his fifth consecutive loss, and 7th of his last 8 fights). 29 years old, listed around 6'4 1/2, weighing in the 240-245 area. Video of his fight with Batchelder: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-_pHPkC3nBQ&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-_pHPkC3nBQ&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Yeah, I remember watching a couple of his fights...the one he won and then his loss to Tischenko...and coming away with some positive opinions of him.
there's also McWilliams Arroyo from Puerto Rico who sometimes is listed as McWilliam. He didn't do so great at the olys, but won the world am title the next year and already has a loss as a pro that was televised.
Gary Russell Jr., 10-0, 7 KO's, is fighting tonight at Club Nokia in Los Angeles against Mauricio Pastrana, who has lost 7 of his last 8, most coming below the super featherweight limit. Here's video of his last fight, at Club Nokia in June, a two round KO of Rodrigo Aranda. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EURNg6q2p3k&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EURNg6q2p3k&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
John Jackson, son of Julian Jackson, fought at the '08 Olympics as a welterweight, where he best Magomed Nurutdinov and then lost to the same fighter (Kim Jung-Joo) who beat Demetrius Andrade. The 21 year old from the Virgin Island is 6-0, with 6 knockouts, fighting at junior middleweight. Video of his fight second round stoppage of Ildefonso Soto, who Boxrec lists as entering the fight 0-0-1. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BRYlLrV3VSk&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BRYlLrV3VSk&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Frankie Gavin didn't actually fight in the Olympics, having failed to make weight, but the 24 year old southpaw from the UK is now 7-0, with 6 KO's, with his next fight coming on September 18th. Here is video of his last fight, against Gavin Tait, which he won via first round TKO back in May. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/C6XG5hXCyt4&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/C6XG5hXCyt4&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
I think Gavin is the best of the British bunch (also includes James De Gale, Billy Joe Saunders, David Price, Tony Jeffries, and Joe Murray) he's yet to show any flaws...we knew he could box, but he's also shown an aggresive side since turning pro. Already looks well-rounded, probably more prepared to be stepped up than the others. He fights for the Irish title next month on a big Frank Warren bill.
Here is video of the Khedafi Djelkhir-Jorge Cordero fight from the Tua-Barrett pay per view undercard. A pretty damn entertaining fight for one that lasted less than three minutes. Djelkkhir was knocked down in the fist round...made the mistake of leaving himself open to a southpaw's left hand trying to follow up after knockdown....was seriously hurt by it, but eventually regained his footing, and the two entered into a pretty heated exchanged, Djelkhir got a little wild, but eventually caught Cordero with a left hook as Cordero was preparing a one of his own. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2IKP8egeB_4&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2IKP8egeB_4&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Yeah, I have to say, some of the video I've seen of him is pretty impressive. Definitely appears to be one of the better prospects in the sport at the moment. I remember some of the reports about his problems making weight and not being able to compete in the Olympics, not all too disimilar to what happened with Gary Russell Jr. on the American squad...both had some lofty expectations heading into Beijing.
Update on Bastie Samir from Steve Kim, who says he might be fighting on the next Fight Night Club: http://www.maxboxing.com/news/main-lead/an-autumn-in-russia-for-atlas
Vasyl Lomachenko is a fighter a lot of people, myself included, are quite interested in seeing turn pro after his impressive Val Barker-winning performance at the '08 Olys, but he's still an amateur, and earlier this year said he will likely remain so until after the 2012 Olympics. http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=26773 Below is some video of him from the World Amateur Championships last year, where he had the following results: 2009 (as a featherweight) 1st round bye Defeated Mario Aleksic (Bosnia) 16-2 Defeated Craig Evans (Wales) 15-1 Defeated Branimir Stankovic (Serbia) 8-2 Defeated Oscar Valdez (Mexico) 12-1 Defeated Sergey Vodopyanov (Russia) 12-1 http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Vasyl_Lomachenko The final (in two parts) against Vodopyanov: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pRS8NyFOZw0?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pRS8NyFOZw0?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/jaAPdieoNGo?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/jaAPdieoNGo?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
