    REED Seems to Recall 3...

The Trevor Berbick/Zab Judah Style KO...A BODY PUNCH KO (Ya'll Musta Forgot!!!) & 1 Other where a Guy Basically Staggered from 1 Rope to the Other...

But then Again, REED is "Only" Up to Day 3, N Terms of Watching EVERY Fight...REED has Worked Out a System where he'll Tivo the Live Broadcast, Do Something Else for about 45 Minutes, then Fast Forward to the Fights he WANTS to See 1st...

Then, REED'll Go Back & Convert the Entire Broadcast the Next Day or So...Usually, REED has 100 hours of dvr Space, but he's DOWN to LESS than 10 Currently...

For a long friggin time, I've played the contrarian when it comes to olympic/amateur boxing, but I'll admit I am having some problems with the scoring in this Olympics so far. It isn't like the past Olympics, or the one before it, or 96, or the one in 92. It's not like the world championships less than a year ago. It's not like the usa am style (which it never has been and which isn't like the typical world am scoring...different argument).

My main gripe is that the scoring is way too conservative. As I alluded to earlier in this thread (I think), I have a suspicion that it has far more to do with the judges worrying about being considered corrupt than their actually being corrupt. They (as a group) are just afraid to pull the trigger and score a punch.

In the past, a judge would score what he saw. No, it wasn't perfect, but it worked damn well because when the scoring gets up in the high teens and low 20's for most fights, the right fighter ends up winning, even if there are a few missed punches along the way.

Now, the with the judges being afraid to score a punch, the scores are much lower and missed punches mean far more. Also, it is far EASIER to be corrupt now because you can always justify NOT scoring a punch by saying it wasn't clear from your vantage point. However, if you score a punch and there is visual proof that the punch didn't land, you can be seen as being 'corrupt.'

Sure, I still think the right guy is winning most of these fights, but the Warren fight was just painful to watch with both fighters benefiting from shitting judging.

They´d award at least five points for a knockdown. How difficult can that be? One point for a knockdown it´s idiotic. Agreed about the conservative scoring. Although I think one problem is that the judges simply can´t pull the trigger at such rapidfire pace, when both fighters throw combinations. It´s usually single punches during lulls of action that score. I can´t say I enjoy watching this sort of boxing much. If I was a fighter, and up 3-0 I´d just run away for six minutes.

I tried watching boxing during last Olympics and hated it. I tried this time again and it was the same result.

Sloppy fights with horrible judging system.

Yeah the scoring in that fight was pathetic, along with the Chinese Light heavyweight (Xiaoping?) in his "win" over Beterbeyiv (Russia). The Russian dude scored two knockdowns that weren't called, and at least two dozen meaningful right hands that weren't scored.

Those two fights were the first two legit robbery claims thus far - fittingly taking place about 20 minutes apart (only one fight separating the two).

I missted 2 f'n straight days of competition! First day, I just forgot to record. I got home in time to watch a little, but not like the other days. Yesterday, I called home and told my sister to record the 5:00PM airing, and she ended up recording an episode of 'Monk' or something. Damnit!

Thankfully, I'm set for today, though.

Yes, they match him so soft, I think they wait until Michel Trabant wins a world title. He´s been ranked #1 by the WBO at 140 forever, but Universum never challenges a champion EVER. They wait till they can cherry pick the opponent for a vacant belt. Blain has been knocked down by bums numerous times and was losing to an Argentinian toughman 55-60, till the poor guy seperated his shoulder. Universum put it on fightnews as a press release were it read: Blain made a furious comeback after some rough spots and stopped his opponent in the seventh round. :notallthere:

Shiming certainly seems like he has disdain for throwing a lot of jabs like Roy...and keeps his hands up about as well as a natural American heavyweight.

Definitely looks like he's been influenced by fighters on this side of the water.

    He's got natural talent, though.

That he won´t make it past the european level at super-featherweight. If he would drain himself he could make 122, maybe even 118. At 130 he´ll get run over by physically stronger fighters. I feel he´s not even as big as Rafa.

Ah....Andrade was a breath of fresh air for our team. He does look like he can medal. Not as active as I'd like, but he changed his style early to basically pick apart his opponent.

After Yanez and Andrade, there isn't anything special(Raynell Williams has talent, but he should stick to the ammys a bit more....unless he really picks it up in his next fight).

Yanez seems to have a tougher division, though.

Andrade was a big favorite for the gold coming into these olympics. He was basically even money against the rest of the field.

I just watched this fight. Beterbiev looked like a pretty good pro prospect in this fight. Very patient, using some solid head/waist movement, avoiding punches without moving his feet, landing solid blows...too bad he didn't score a point after the first round.

It's also a shame Zhang was allowed to go all "Johnny Louise" on him.

According to his profile, he was born in '85 so he's pretty young. He could certainly be around in another four years, though, with the way this fight was judged I wouldn't mind seeing him just turn pro.

Mario Sivolija looked like another good prospect, though he had the same thing happen to him that happened to Bertebiev. He was in against a completely negative fighter in Kurbanov, who moved, danced, and held almost the entire fight.

I thought Sivolija showed a really nice jab in this fight, straight, accurate, sharp...he just didn't get (m)any points for it. He also landed about a handful of nice short, crisp left hooks, but didn't get much credit for those either.

But he got down early and was forced to come forward and make the fight, something he didn't do a great job of.

He was born in '81, hopefully he turns pro after these Olympics.

I'd at least be curious to see what the scoring would look life if they ditched the timed second method and just tallied up the overall total from all five judges, maybe even dropping the highest and the lowest total.

Would it be any more representative of the fight?

Li Yang uses a lot of running and a vice grip late to maintain his 1 point lead/win over Luis Porozo, who consistently tried to make the fight.

Jim Gray asks him why he spent so much time running and moving...the translator says "you mean before the fight?".

Ref gives a lot of cautions, no warnings.
