Dan Campbell on the Russian and American teams "they're systematically eliminating us".

Says his technical advisor told him Andrade landed about 8 punches before the fourth round that didn't score.

Said he didn't have a problem with Andrade walking out of the ring.

    Definite frustration.

Yeah but the Korean's punches weren't clean and they were scoring, it has nothing to do with activity level. :shit:

He would get more rewarded in a pro style scoring system, but a lot of his punches were blocked - partially or fully - and those just aren't going to get you a lot of points in this Olympics.

Kim threw fewer punches, but he landed some clearly, and sometimes that seems to do better in this system because it's more distinct and perhaps easier to see/score for the judges than a flurries and combinations, where there may be some landed punches but it's more of a visual effect than a physical one.

Wilder gets two points for a warning, fight ends tied 10-10, and Wilder wins on the accepted scores.

Wilder said he lost focus seeing his teammates crying in the locker room.

Said he's like a big brother to them.

Oops. I meant Russo. Wilder will have his hands full. It will probably be Russo and Chakhiev for gold/silver.

I don't think Gray actually watches boxing, so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even know who Francesco Damiani is...or at least never watched him fight.

Maybe if he would have fought Holyfield he would. :dunno:

I think Ive figured out olympic boxing scoring

You have to have low activity level, let the other guy pound you for a bit, then strike back the occasional single shot, react like you landed it, then go back to defensive and wait for the judges to hit the button.

So many of these scores were total shat.

While I know Damiani and how his Mercer fight went is pretty well-known since it is mentioned in a lot of Mercer fights, particularly Morrison...

I don't think I've ever seen him fight. Was the Mercer fight shown in the US? This was right before I really got into the sport...

Yeah, that was one of the few fights he had in the States. It was televsied on ESPN, if I remember correctly. I have a tape of it lost away somewhere among boxes and boxes of tapes.

I thought Damiani was a pretty good fighter, but his was really a career of almosts. He almost fought Foreman, he almost fought Holyfield, he almost beat Mercer.

I rarely say a punch was lucky if it lands, but Mercer got lucky with that punch. He was getting outclassed in that fight and lands that lucky punch right to the point of the nose and Damiani sorta hesitates and then falls right to the canvas.

With all the criticism of the Olympic boxing rules, I feel I should mention one rule that I absolutely love in the sport...and that is that the clock is stopped when the referee warns/cautions the fighters and doesn't resume until he signals.

I'd like to see that implemented in the pro game.

it seems good in theory but if they instituted that rule it could take hours to finish certain fights. how long would some of ruiz's fights in his heyday have lasted?

Referee's are much quicker to give cautions and warnings and take away points...which come two at a time, and which I think are automatic after a specific number of cautions.
