Whittaker was Certainly CAPABLE of That, Simpleton... "a Very Close Fight When Duran Quit"....Yes, Because he was MINDFUCKED in a Way that Certainly WASN'T Foreign to Pernell Whittaker...Bolo Punches, Dipsy Doo Moves, Bug Eye'd Stares, Pitty Pat Mixed w/Unexpectedly STIFF Jabs/Crosses, Playing to the Crowd, etc., was All Part of Sweet Pea's Bag of Tricks, his Repertoire... To Suggest Otherwise Reveals Just How LITTLE of Him You've Actually Watched... Look @ Whittaker's Movement in the Chavez Fight (Particularly Early) and Tell REED It WASN'T "Aliesque" or Leonard-Duran IIesque???...You CAN'T... Put Your Boxing DUNCE Cap On and Go Sit in the Fucking Corner... REED
Mythical matchups usually involve the best versions of fighters And I hate that weight point anyway... Firsf off, Duran accomplished nothing at 168 ... secondly, he was at 168 because he was getting so fat between fights that he couldn't get lower anymore... you're giving him extra credit for being less good at keeping fit than Whitaker was ... furthermore, it has no bearing on a matchup that isn't happening at 168... Esteban DeJesus couldn't hack 140 but he could hack 135 and beat Duran ... we could do this all day... Alexis Arguello was knocking guys dead at 140... there's no way some little midget like Ernesto Marcel could ever beat him ... it means nothing
Why are you arguing with a man who once famously said that JL Castillo would beat Whitaker? Yeaaaahhhh, cause Chavez couldn't beat him, but Chavez-lite would beat him, right? Makes perfect sense. For record, Duran vs Whitaker at 135 is highly debatable. If forced to choose, I'd give Duran the edge. Whitaker could outpoint the early 70s Duran who was still honing all his skills, but the 76-78 Duran was probably the most complete fighting machine who ever lived. BOTH Duran and Whitaker were better than Chavez. It's not just styles... they were better.
Doub thinks Whitaker was Amir Khan ... he's never forgiven him for humiliating so many hunters and then talking all hippity hop about how easy it was
If anyone at 135 was capable of mentally unraveling Duran the way Leonard did at 135, it’s Sweet Pea. It’s a 50-50 fight for me. Whitaker’s toughness is often underrated or forgotten about. He took some good power shots from Uncle Roger, and even at 35 years of age and past it, he had no trepidation standing right in front of Trinidad and firing. He obviously got the worst of it but he went the distance. I don’t think Duran will simply run him over. Pea would make him think out there.
It's true, though If Whitaker walked forward slowly, got punched in the face and threw three haymakers per round and then was all "aw, shucks" afterward you'd love him
Rocky Juarez? I know broken Roman statues that can move their hands better than that guy. I just think Duran is way too active and fluid..........let's face it, they are both the best 135lbr that either man ever faced.
Fucking awful stuff. Literally just plodded after guys like some sort of a conscientious objector with a pedometer who had been told that if he completed 40,000 steps in 12 rounds that he'd get a prize. He LITERALLY walked around for 36 minutes doing nothing other than vaguely protecting himself.
Juarez was calculating. And deadly accurate. It did not always pay off in the end. But when it did it was beautiful to behold.
My main objection here is the idea that Whitaker could just replicate what SRL did. Whitaker could possibly win (possibly). But he's not doing it by mimicking SRL. The two are very different with different strengths and weaknesses.
Whitaker wouldn't have to replicate SRL to give Duran problems. Whitaker's style in itself would be a problem for any lightweight in history, including Duran. Or more accurately, Whitaker's style would BEAT any lightweight in history, except for Duran.
