As Undeniably GREAT as he is, Duran is Definitely Overrated...REED has NEVER Seen a Fighter w/More MINIMIZED Losses than Duran has...& REED has NEVER Seen a Fighter Get More MILEAGE Out of a Loss than Duran has from the Hagler Fight...

Slightly over. The best FW I ever saw but things always get better with an early death.

    UNDERRATED...

Most People Think Alexis Arguello is THE ONLY "Name" on Aaron Pryor's Resume, which is an INSULT to Cervantes...Cervantes was 1 of THE Loooooooooooooongest Reigning Champions of the 70's-Early 80's....

    Wilfredo Gomez???

he was overrated for a long time, but I think in recent years he has become underrated, especially his skills... When Gomez had to be, he could be damn near unhittable... and this is coming from someone who absolutely DETESTS the guy

If Foreman was diminshed by 1977, then does that mean the heavyweight division was really shit by 1991-1997, or did Foreman just make repeated trips to Lourdes from 1977-1991?? :dunno:

    Salvador Sanchez was overrated.

There is no faster route to super-stardom than to win a few fights, look very promising, and then get killed/sent to jail.

Pick up a title before jail/death, and hey, it's Canastota Time.

Ringo Bonavena would have gotten the same treatment if he went to the Mustang Ranch the day after he dropped Joe Frazier twice. Thankfully, he stuck around long enough to be shown up for what he was, a limited Argie farmhand with a good jaw, a bit of power and the speed of sub-zero maple syrup.

    Oleg Maskaev.

The description of Oscar Bonavena uncannily fits that of Vitali Klitschko, sans the nationality.

No, it doesn't, and not just because Klitschko never worked on a farm in Argentina either.

In any case, I say Maskaev is about rated right. A so-so fighter who wasn't especially poor, just was rather ordinary.

    Evander Holyfield?

Holyfield is overrated if for no other reason than his success was under-written by performance enhancing drugs which we now know he took.

If you ignore the steroids, then he is about rated right.

    MIKE TYSON.

Good one --- I actually thought about posting him before going with Holyfield.

To me, Tyson is over-rated. I think head-to-head, he belongs against most of the greats, & would have beaten several --- but the excuses for his losses & short-comings are literally unending, as inexorable as the tide, & his competition is positively abysmal for large stretches of his career.

Relative to his astonishing talent, Tyson is one of the biggest under-achievers in many, many years.

Tyson had astonishing talent and I often wonder what had happened if he had faced Lewis and Holyfield in his prime and not theirs. That said his resume lacks really big wins and a loss to a 42-1 underdog does not help. Tyson: slightly over.

    Carlos Monzon:
Wow... Wasn't he helped out by the referee in one of his fights with Briscoe? That said Monzon seemed to me to be the perfect MW not called Ray Robinson. He did fight and beat up a lot of big names and his run as MW champion took years, and the proliferation of titles, to overhaul. You know when it takes 20 years for someone like you to come along, that you must be a bit special. I think he is rated about right as a great fighter and great champion, and utterly horrible individual.

UNDERRATED... Basilio was a beast of a Welterweight and a pretty good middleweight too... he was absolutely robbed in his fight with Johnny Saxton, a fight where he pummelled the guy with double hooks all night and lost an outrageous decision (and the title) ... his resume is superb

    now, again
