Because he knows Pascal is garbage, and was bailed out by that headbutt, and he sees him as being more beatable then Chad.
December 18th...a week before Christmas would be the latest HBO has gone in the year with a fight of this level in a bit.
I think it was the second Echols fight, and even that was tough to watch because of all the holding. Fuck Hopkins.
That's part of it, but Pascal represents the greater payday, which is why Bernard claims he's willing to travel to Canada. Hopkins only cares about paydays these days - or in his words "back pay". I don't think he was scared to fight Dawson, just that HBO was never going to compensate him for the risk since neither one of them could fill up a phone booth. And while HBO isn't involved in this fight (not yet, anyway), he'll still get paid well, as long as the fight stays north of the border. If Golden Boy tries to get cute and move it to Vegas, they'll take a bath.
Very true about the first part. About the second part, perhaps "scared" is too harsh, but I dont think him avoiding Dawson was all based on money. Hopkins is a opportunist Jake, we all know that. He knew Pavlik was made for him, and he knew he could beat the shell of the man who was once Roy Jones. But isnt too confident about beating a young, big, quick southpaw who prior to the Pascal fight did show a good workrate. In any case.... Pascal I think wins. He isnt very good, but he is fast and energetic. Handspeed at this stage is all it might take to beat the 137 yr old Bernard.
One thing I will say is that I love the irony of this fight if Pascal wins - after waiting 17 years to avenge his 1993 loss, Hopkins loses his very next fight to a Roy Jones-wannabe.
