you don't have to punch hard to cut an ear or open a cut in general. sometimes it happens "accidentally". That ear thing was a freak accident for sure i'd say.

 

The dude's ear swoll up huge visibly during the fight and was targeted till it busted, this was done over the course of 10 rounds. Honestly "The handwraps caused his ear to explode" sounds about as dumb as some of the other famous excuses in Boxing. Oddities happen from time to time, my previous post has plenty of examples.
