MMA is a young sport. Most of these fighters are learning on the job, just like Lesnar.
Rashad Evans for example is incorporating boxing into his repertoire and its paid off as he KO'd the striker Liddell.
Couture is a wrestler, not a striker. Hence he didn't truly have a considerable advantage over Lesnar other than experience. And unfortunately he got caught with a punch to the head by the younger, bigger man. He didn't get outwrestled or anything. Just that the old man got caught. He even cut Lesnar up with a shot.

 

So this makes it easier to take that a novice beat a seasoned mma champ?

 

2 wrestlers fought....the fight pretty much ended with a punch to the back of the head. Now you see more than ever why boxing is so important in combat.

 

Perhaps on paper, but in reality this simply isn't the case is it?

If it was, then people like Rashad, Brock, and many other fighters would have ZERO success in MMA, and newcomers to boxing would be far more successful than they have been.

The opposite is true. It is much, much harder to compete at world level in boxing, than MMA.

 

This can no longer be debated.

I knew Randy's long layoff and the size disadvantage would've been how downfall against Lesnar. That being said, Brock will lose to Nogueira... And would get battered against Fedor or Barnett...

 

Lesnar has another 4-5 months to improve his game. He should really work on submissions and avoiding submissions in that period. If he works on avoiding submission 30 minutes a day for 5 months, he wil have 75 hours of training.

Yeah, you have made this point already. I am on your bandwagon. I think Lesnar beating Couture really is going to hurt the UFC. It is embarrassing really.

 

I agree with you. I just wanted to point out that even if he only did it 30 minutes a day, he would have still have 75 hours of training. If he does it 3 hours a day, he will have 150 x 3 hours = 450 hours of training on submissions before his next fight. His next opponent will definitely be a submission expert so he should really train as much as possible on avoiding and imposing submissions.

 

Leon Spinks was also an Olympic gold medalist. He didn't just pick up boxing a year or so before he won the title like Brock did here. ::

I like MMA.I am not a huge fan, but it is cool. There is just no way this happens in any other legitimate sport. :::ana White is a smart man, but this is a major, major fuck up. It is embarrassing and it makes the UFC look like a big joke.

What would you say if a Wing Chun guy started boxing, turned pro, had 3 pro fights and then beat Calzaghe?

Would you say it doesn't make boxing look bad because the guy had a background in a close range combat sport?
