Round by Round: Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito II

He loses both fights to Cotto on points. I don't understand this need to rehabilitate the guy. He has not won a fight since Richardson caught him with plaster in his gloves. He had plaster in his gloves for the Shane fight. The celebration post-Cotto has revealed a blood-stained pad under his gauze. He landed plenty of shots against Cotto and didn't open one cut and never hurt the guy significantly.

 

Margarito landed at least 100 more punches in the first fight.

 

I think Margarito should retire, tbh. That eye is fucked.

Once Cotto wasn't hurt he was able to more regularly apply his guerilla tactics.

Eventually, of course, Cotto got trapped and this time the agricultural swings of Margarito had less effect.

He hurt Cotto as early as what, the 5th, in their first fight. Cotto was blessing himself coming out for the start of the rounds. He was clearly worried and panicked.

Of course, I spoke to Teddy Atlas this week and he said it's possible that the ghost of Miguel's late father poked Tony in the eye and caused the swelling. I asked him what did Povetkin Sr. think of the fight and he said he hadn't spoken to him since the Boswell "incident".

everything about the first fight, so far as Cotto's reaction to punches landed, was different. Everything. His expression, his reaction, the blood, the cuts, everything.

When he fought Pacquiao, he was getting dropped and was firing back all the time. Getting beat up he was still firing back.

Against Margarito, first time out, he had this cowed, submissive, beaten down look. He quit, essentially, a survival instinct.

The guy was being beaten down with blunt instruments and he submitted.

Against Pac, he looked beaten but not beat.

I don't get it. Are you saying that yes, everyone did notice, and how could I think they didn't? If so, I was pretty sure most people did, as they were on full display during the ring walk.

I think whether you think the stoppage was appropriate or not, there's little debate that it was handled unprofessionally.

First, you have a doctor who can't even be commital about his desire to stop the fight. The sequence in which it was finally stopped seemed like a five minute bull-shit session in which Smoger couldn't get a clear answer one way or the other. If the doctor can't be firm and definitive about whether or not the fight should be stopped, what the fuck good is he?

Second, the reason given for the stoppage, which is that Margarito couldn't see, according to the doctor himself, had been the case for three rounds! So why didn't he stop it sooner?

The whole thing seemed highly driven by emotion and you almost get the feeling the doctor would've polled the crowd if he could've to find out whether or not to stop the fight.

I think the biggest shame is that Cotto was unable to avenge his loss more definitively. The stoppage gives Margarito the room to claim that he would've finished Cotto if only he had had the chance.

 

Cotto's wife needs to give me a tit wank
