Don't forget...when Floyd and Manny fought someone they thought had a size advantage they'd fight them at a catchweight. Pretty sure Manny vs Cotto was at 143 and Floyd vs Canelo 152. Manny vs Margarito was at 150. Jones vs Calzaghe was at 170 I believe.
@ as low as 154.. that's like Trinidiots who point to Tito fighting at 140 lb early in his career. he didn't do shit below 160 professionally, and he wasn't even that low in the olympics afaik, he was 156. he might've been 154 once or twice within a year or two after the olympics, but he never won any titles at light middle and he sure as shit couldn't have continued making the weight. he was a big *middleweight,* and moved up for that reason. You want to talk about moving up, Pac was a fucking *legitimate* FLYWEIGHT champion (not "had a couple fights around flyweight in the first 10 fights of his career") and is now a *legitimate* WELTERWEIGHT champion (not a "opportunistically moved up to 147 to fight the shittiest champion in the division, grab a belt, and go back down") champion. Roy Jones was shorter than Diego Corrales, I guess Chico is the bigger man & you would've felt Roy was undersized if they fought. Mike Tyson must've been a TINY ass heavy, because he was the same height as RJJ. De La Hoya has a few inches on David Tua, so Tua mustve been a small heavyweight also. Dunno about the other guys, but there's no way in hell Virgil Hill is 6'2." Either way, Jones Jr averaged 185 on fight night, so what division would you put him in? You think he could've/should've continued making 168? Also, let's not forget this little bit of trivia: those guys are a bunch of fucking bums. Hill would've been the sole exception & he was already past his best, coming off a loss to DM. Oh jeez man, Ruiz was a fucking shitbird fighter and you KNOW this. You're acting like he moved up to heavy and schooled Lennox Lewis. There isn't a single objective person here who would argue that Floyd & Pac's respective resumes shit all over Roy's, and that what they have accomplished is far more impressive. Again, RJJ doing behind-the-back-KOs & shit is impressive, but for me, the NBA championship team is better than the Globetrotters.
For me, that's gotta be Toney or Richard Hall. Weight drained or not, Toney got undressed in that fight. (now we just need clogg to come in here and claim Toney was never shit to begin with)
I only made 1 bet. That Welcher joe king was supposed go take a photograph on a truck scale afterward. Of course he never did
I remember thinking back then that Hall must be the toughest man alive. He got the shit kicked out of him round after round, AND was getting mercilessly clowned by Jones at the same time, then when the ref finally stopped the fight (way too late), he was angrily protesting the stoppage.
Roy was an amazing talent, one of the best I've ever seen. But just like Floyd, spent too much of his prime fighting guy's way under his league. Could have been much more and I think he himself knows it.
I think Roy was affected by what happened to McClellan, which makes his continued career all the more baffling.
Roy was PHYSICALLY the most talented. Not sure if he was technically {getting dropped by Lou Del Valle, no defense once his motor skills diminshed} or emotionally {DQ'd vs Griffen} the most talented, but it is human nature to rely on the muscle over the mind, especially where the muscle is sufficient.
It's a FACT....Roy Jones DID Fight as Low as '54 & There were Even Talks of him Vying for Terry Norris' Jr. Middle Title by his 8th Fight, which Obviously Never Materialized.... YOU Noted "Overall Bodyweight", in Defense of Floyd...Well, if You're Gonna Argue from that Perspective, Use the LOWEST Weight Roy Actually Fought @...If REED Isn't Mistaken, Roy Jones is THE ONLY Man in Boxing History to Fight @ Low as '54 & Win a Portion of the Heavyweight Title... Roy's BUILD was Not That of a Modern Day Lightheavy, Sorry...Roy was 5'11 & had Loooooooooooong, SLEEK, Sinewy Muscles...Roy Fought AGAINST Regular Sized and Big Lightheavy's...Hell, just WATCH the In-Ring Size Difference of his Bouts...He was DWARFED More Time than Not, Yes, Even Against Virgil Hill, Who Appeared to Be a Good COUPLE Inches Taller than Roy & Considerably THICKER in the Body... The Rest of your Post is NATHAN More than Resume Nitpicking...But As a Floyd Fan, Are You REALLY Gonna Talk Shit about Ruiz' Worth, KNOWING Full Well Floyd Acquired a "Lineal" Title Against a Straight Up SCRUB, Affectionately Called "BUMdomir" Around these Parts???... In Your Next Post, You Claim Toney was "Weight Drained"???...How about Diego Corrales, when him & Floyd Fought???...How about Canelo, when he Faced Floyd???...Not to Mention the MENTAL Stress Chico Endured, Knowing he was Facing MAJOR Jail Time, Shortly After the Floyd Bout...See, 2 Can Play This Game, Bro... It's like the Early 00's All Over Again...Posters Coming Out of the Woodwork, Dissecting Roy's Resume Under a Microscope, while FAILING to Do Likewise w/THEIR Favorite Fighters...ANYBODY Can Nitpick a Resume, it's Not Exactly Difficult... To Be Clear, Floyd AND Manny have BETTER Resumes (REED Never Suggested Otherwise), but You're Acting as if Roy Fought NOBODY, Which is BULLSHIT... Fuuuurthermore, REED Sees NOfuckingWAY Floyd OR Pac Beats Roy Head to Head, Lb for Lb... REEDhno:
Even so. This is fine by me. If he was getting beat I would have issues. But this his sixth win in a row. Leave him be.
As per usual the truth lies somewhere in the middle. IMO Roy was a small, but not exactly tiny light heavy. Roy looked best as a super middle to me, he was obviously a big-ish middleweight. At light heavy, he was smaller than most of his foes, but not exactly dwarfed by them as Pacquiao is at WW for example, or even Duran at 147++; Also I do find the Ruiz win very impressive, maybe even his best win. I thought Ruiz would bash him up, through sheer size/strength alone. Sure, Ruiz isn't the best fighter, but again I do put a lot of stock into much smaller fighters dominating significantly larger men. It's not a common occurence in boxing, and not something that's supposed to happen. Also, Roy's speed was surreal for his size. Shrink Roy down to 126 with the same, unscaled speed, and he'd still make most featherweights look slow.
Reallywas always physically gifted probably the most gifted ever. But I never considered a boxer. I think when his physical gifts or gone he could not rely on boxing, like Ali, to save him in the end.
Roy RELIED on his Physical Gifts, for Certain, but he Wasn't w/Out Boxing Acumen... If Roy were JUST an Athlete, he'd have Been Amir Khan, Andre Dirrell, Zab Judah or "Sugar" Shane Mosley...Roy's Ring IQ was VERY High & he was an Avid Watcher of Fight Films...His Boxing Intellect Manifests Itself in his Commentary, 1nce You Get Past Him Fellating Himself... REED:hammert:
There's talk of him fighting Huck, let's hope that doesn't happen. Also, regardless of if Roy was a bit more talented than Floyd he didn't accomplish more and Floyd has preserved better.
and then theres the thing where mayweather jr is probably gonna make more in one night than jones jr made his entire career
He gets overpaid when he gets the fights overseas. I can't imagine he makes shit fighting in the US. When he fought in Atlanta for example he didn't exactly sell out.
