I just re-watched this fight. Munguia looks like the real deal. It's not just the power. His offensive skill and punch variety is very advanced for a 21 year old, and he appears to me to have a good ring IQ. Put it this way, he's better at 21 than Canelo was at 21. Even right now, Oscar wouldn't be in a hurry to put the Ginger in with Munguia.
Yeah. He looks good. He also didn't blink at Ali's shots. Too bad his best challenges fight on Showtime.
That could work his favor. I'd keep him away from Hurd/Charlo/Lara for right now. By time he's around 23 he might be a REAL beast to be reckoned with. But TBH, I'd pick him over Charlo right now. Jermell, not Jermall.
Part of not blinking at Ali's punches is because Ali can't punch. Munguia doesn't seem chinny to me, but we'll see. Munguia was televised on TV Azteca/BeIn in the past. Interestingly, in his last fight against Navarrette earlier this year, the stands looked to be about 10% full. That won't be the case for a long time now. Munguia was rated #6 prospect of 2017 so it's not like he was a pure unknown, but it's easy enough to hide when you're only on Spanish tv. ESPN's 2017 prospect of the year Notably, there is no Devin Haney on that list. I don't know all of the fighters on it, but Haney looked p4p #1 potential to me on Friday night.
Munguia has a great hook....reminds me of a much better Antonio Margarito....someone should check the wrapping on his hands.
He kinda looked like a hybrid of Margarito and Corrales, which if he is, is a scary hybrid. The first hook and finishing were both Corrales-esque.
Wow, I can't believe I haven't seen this guy before - he's superb. He might be the only properly good Mexican fighter since Morales and Marquez I know what you mean about his left hook - the best ones he throws have that perfect crisp arc, locked in place, with elbow level to shoulder. So much torque on it too, meaty as fuck. His right hand is also nothing to sniff it. Could do with a better jab and defence. His feet are also faster than they initially appear - he glides around the ring quite effortlessly. Shame on mikE for trying to skank his fellow fightbeaters, it was obvious Sadam had no chance at all against this monster To dampen the hype a bit - Sadam is not a particularly good fighter at this level, and he also looked 2 weight divisions smaller. But despite that it's just obvious this guy is legit, and has power, there's no doubt about it. What do you think would have happened if the NSAC did OK him Vs Golovkin the other week? It is ironic they refused that matchup, then allowed this one which turned out to be an utter mismatch, with Sadam being beaten like a red headed stepchild
I'd like to see him fight Chavez Jr next and they could bill it as "Son of a Legend Vs Son of a Journeyman" with the son of a journeyman brutally beating him from pillar to post.
Munguia would have lost. He's not ready for a Golovkin level fighter yet. HOWEVER, he wouldn't have gone down with a whimper in 2 rounds like that rat bum Vanes. I think would have have acquitted himself well, but it's definitely good for us and Munguia that the fight was rejected. Golovkin might have ruined what could be a very promising career. But "like I said before" he looks far more advanced at 21 than Clenelo was. At 21, Clenelo was having problems with Alfonso Gomez.
I feel the same way 100%. At first I thought damn I wish they let him fight instead of the rat, it would have been a fun scrap, but actually no you're right - there's no way he could have beaten someone as advanced as Golovkin, certainly not right now with no experience at this level. So what would be the point? Golovkin could have put a major dent in him physically and mentally, and impacted his career for sure. Who do you reckon he should fight next?
Tough to say because virtually all of his biggest challenges at 154 are PBC fighters. I reckon HBO will bring him back in the fall to face Smith. Smith isn't a top fighter, but he's bigger and more durable than Ali, so he might at least give us a better indication of Munguia's power. But my hunch is it'd be a slaughter.
He looked like he might be a player when he stopped Abregu 5 years ago, but it wasn't to be. He's regressed a lot from what he was then. Munguia effectively ended his career.
Sadam OVERACHIEVED, Honestly...Wasn't the Least Bit "Special" in ANY Particular Regard... Nonetheless, 2008 U.S Olympian, Former WBO Super Welter Champion...Even in Cotto's Retirement Fight, Sadam was an UNDERDOG... w/Proper Time to REFLECT, He Should Be Proud of What he Accomplished... REED
While he wasnt Donald Curry (hehe) as a physical talent, Sadam had decent handspeed and decent left hook. But no chin and no defense.... that's a bad combination to have.
Munguia needs to be at Super Middleweight as this burning down is not doing him any good at all. I know why Zanfer and GB are doing it to set him up with Canelo for next Cinco de Mayo which will be the richest Mexican fight ever.
Thanks, I like Munguia a lot. He's a banger and tough and he's flawed. Guys like him make the sport fun, but he has a tough one if he is fighting Jessie Vargas next. Jaime is burned down too much at super welter and he's a growing boy needs to move up to middleweight. Inoue is my favorite, though. He needs to get these next two guys out of there and sign with Top Rank. I think he may be one of boxing's biggest stars in 2020 with an unlimited potential for making millions He to be fighting in four places: Tokyo, Vegas, MSG and Dubai. He's like Tyson was, makes the sport exciting.
Fuck Dubai. Middle Eastern fight cards are so boring to watch, the audience just sits there quietly. Tokyo is the same but he's Japanese so I get that, the crowds do seem more animated for his fights.
I know. I'm just saying as a fan I like watching a big fight with a great atmosphere, you can't beat it. Look at Tyson-Douglas, greatest upset in boxing history and it's almost dull to watch back because the crowd is so polite and quiet. However, from a monetary standpoint, yeah I totally understand where you're coming from.
