Pics can be deceptive tbh, in the ring they both look the weights they are. Alvarez has a more of a standard MMA than boxing physique he's very thick through the neck , traps & trunk.

Alvarez Sorta Reminds REED of a Poor Man's Miguel Cotto, a Bit...The STOCKY Build, the HIGH Guard, the Mostly AGGRESSIVE Offense, LEAKY Defense, Punches in COMBINATION Typically...Not Really Athletic or UNathletic, for that Matter...

He Hasn't Faced Anybody to Provide ANY Insight on his Potential or Future Greatness, but REED likes what he's Seen Thus Faaaar...Cotto's Brother Hurt Alvarez on the Floyd-Sugar Shane Undercard, but U've Gotta Like the WAY Alvarez Responded to it...Dude is Only like 20-21 Years Old So there's Really NO Rush...

He looked barely bigger than Matthew Hatton in the ring, if that's not a tiny 154 pounder I don't know what is :)

I actually think he is smaller than Cotto, who I consider to be very small at 154.

Again, I'm not saying they are the same size, I'm saying the size difference isn't big by any means. If Rios or Maidana fought Alvarez at 147 it would look like an average 140 pounder vs a small welterweight.

And my point all along has been that a size difference like that isn't enough to overcome a gulf in fighting ability. The top 140 pounders would batter Alvarez.

Dont insult Vargas by comparing him to the fraud ginger.

Would Ginger in a million years have beaten Quartey, and ran close with a prime Winky? Fuck no!

Alvarez sucks. But Mexican Wedding Shirt is sadly continuing his spiral. You were once a fine poster, MWS. What happened?

I don't know what the fuck you're talking about Steve. If anything it's you who is on the spiral for not being able to see the obvious when it comes to a scrub like Alvarez against some SLIGHTLY smaller, but astronomically better fighters like Rios or Bradley.

I'm telling you, at 147 Alvarez loses to Rios, Maidana and Bradley.

Different levels of fighters to be honest, especially Rios and Bradley.

And when there is a GULF in ability, size matters less, just like Roy Vs Ruiz, Pacquiao Vs Plasterito etc etc.

And in the fights we're talking about, the size difference is FAR less than the Roy/Pacquiao examples.

Agreed. That's a fucking huge insult. Not only in terms of talent but style too. Vargas was actually a fairly skilled, slick offensive fighter. Alvarez is basic and crap.

Alvarez is basically a Chavez Jr level fighter, possibly marginally better.

Rios doesn't hold a gulf in ability over anyone that regularly boxes and wins on television.

Rios would make for a very shitty welterweight.

    Disagree.

You would have laughed at me back whenever if I had told you Pacquiao would move up to welterweight and WALK THROUGH Cotto in 1 sided fashion and stop him. That's an extreme example because obviously it's Pacquiao, but let's even say Marquez.

You probably would have still laughed at me if I had told you Marquez the featherweight would move up to lightweight in his late 30's and become the first guy to KO Casamayor and Diaz.

In ALL HONESTY I am not a Rios fan, he seems like a chode, and he's a scumbag merely by association.

But I see something in him, he can clearly fight. Fierce little bastard. In the Acosta fight he was pretty much taking a beating, and not for one second did he get discouraged. He just kept on walking Acosta down and took him out. He also has decent offensive skill, enough talent to compete at elite level, and very respectable power.

I agree he would make a crap welterweight, but guess what, Alvarez is a crap welterweight :)

And like I said before Steve, I want this dicussion to be less about Rios and more about Alvarez. It's not really that I think Rios is so special, it's more that I think Alvarez is so utterly average.

That's why I brought Bradley and Maidana into the discussion. I'd confidently pick both of them over Alvarez at 147.

I think there IS a gulf in ability between Rios/Bradley and Alvarez.

A year or so down the line Steve I'll remind you of this conversation when Alvarez gets slapped around and looks outclassed and undersized against the first good fighter he faces :kidcool:

I agree with you totally man. I don't think Alvarez is very good at all. I don't be eating any crow on that day.

HOWEVER - did you see how bloated and crappy Rios looked at 139 under Pac/Marg?

Yeah I kind of did. I didn't take a huge amount of notice though as back then my opinion of Rios wasn't very high. How bad did you think he looked?

It was mainly the Acosta fight that made me wake up and take notice by the way - and think Rios is legit. Acosta is no scrub.

He looked sloppy and soft to me. I just don't think he's the kind of guy that's going to be able to have much success once he's sick of making lightweight.
