Benitez has a spotty record in the transfer market but do Everton really have £?

With a month to go, a push for top four was unlikely but still a possibility. With two weeks to go, top 6 looked like a good possibility before the collapse at home to a team that had been relegated a month earlier. Then two clubs that were behind Everton all year on the table leap frogged Everton in the final week.

That's why I am glad Assholotti is gone. He couldn't get anything out of these guys when there was something to actually play for.

Irish, what formation does Rafa usually play?

Under the last three managers, Everton were in a 4-2-3-1. Occasionally Assholotti would go 3-5-2 which eventually meant 5-3-2 with the outside guys always coming back on defense. Martinez would mix it up, occasionally using a diamond formation in midfield. And Moyes was Mr. 4-4-2 (so was 90% of the Prem back then.)

Rafa is adaptable I'd say but he tends to use 4-2-3-1 as his default template

4-2-3-1 was his best at LFC and he was accused of "Stumbling" onto it by Graeme Souness. I don't think that's true, Graeme.
Benitez is a defensively oriented manager. He used even play 2 holding midfielders at HOME.

IN 2008/2009, Liverpool beat United hime and away, Chelsea home and away, Spurs at home, City away, and drew twice with Arsenal. They lost TWICE all season which is ONE LESS than the team tgat did win it 19/20.That form would have won the league any year.... the draws fucked us.

He finally got around to that in 2008.

THE 3 was Gerrard at the apex, Alonso and Benayoun.

    The 1 was Torres.

    The 2 was Lucas/Mascherano

At Everton, i don't see that he has that sort of talent but he'd probably have DCL as his 1 and the 3 would be Rodriguez, Richarlison and Davies.

Davies can play as an attacker but he has been played as a DM most of the time lately. With Gylfi gone (he was going to be sold anyway) James can move to the center. Richarlison will play left side. Right side is between Iwobi (nobody wants him to stay so hopefully he goes), Grey, Gordon or Townsend. Davies could play there. The two DMs are Allan & Dacoure. Back four Digne, Mina, Keane & Coleman though Godfrey could fill in at all four spots and do just as well. DCL up top.

Varane to United for 42M....very skeptical about this, Real Madrid don't tend to offload unless they think he's on the way down...I think playing alongside Ramos in recent years covered up a tendency to react a bit slowly to danger, he's not slow in the sense of short of pace but slow to anticipate

I keep hearing on football forums about RM & Barca both being in financial trouble (as well as several Italian clubs) but I haven't been bothered to fact check.

Yeah, when it comes to RM selling it's always questionable. Like buying a used supercar. Everything might look fine, but you have to wonder if they're not disclosing something.

United splashing a load of cash again, no doubt determined to keep the Thickos under control and not have them threatening people and storming the stadium.

Upside is United might be a threat in the league.

Downside is that Ollie might get found out . Again.

Celtic's centre back partnership tonight still an 18 year old Murray & Steph Welsh who i think is still 19. Shambles. And the two full backs & goalkeeper are worse.

No luck involved. We need about 9 first team players in, the board knew it and here are. Giving away 3 goals thatd get you a rolicking at under-18 level and losing to a pack of dunskies.

Reminds me of the oft quoted bit from The Sun also Rises

How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked.

“Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually and then suddenly.”

Celtic have been gradually slipping during their SPL titles run and now they are going life and death with this tier, what happens in three or four years if they continue along this trajectory - champions league non qual and early Europa league exits

Id be weary about placing this result along any longer trendline- Celtic have a storied history of abysmal European results in the opening weeks of a new managers tenure which o'neil, Strachan and rodgers added to. But, aye, your movie quote is apt in that this is the climactic reckoning of about 3 years of truly heroic transfer mismanagement....the scale of the rebuild job facing Postecoglou is unprecedented. He's walking into a burning building.

    Just looked at the scoreline.

    FC Midtjylland
    [IMG]

    • A Mabil (61'),
    • R Onyedika (94')
    Celtic

    • C McGregor (48')

Maybe starting an mma fighter with a broken leg wasn't the wisest move for a football club.
