Before the late 2k's a "vintage" Spain side played entertaining football but always fell short. Reputation as underachievers. Times have changed.

 

I think on balance the two most deserving sides went through and overall it's been the case across the groups. Yes there 2as three minutes of bedlam - I call it "football"- but it by and large balanced out

It used to be a win and a draw and a loss got you through.

Ireland drew three in 1990, went to the quarter finals. 1994, we got 1w 1l 1d and went through with two others.

It's ironic, they're letting anyone into the tournament and then eliminating teams who clearly have a lot to offer....truth be told Germany came back well in their last two games.

I've no sympathy for Germany but there will be worse efforts by teams that go further eg Poland, and, arguably, Spain were no better.
