I was listening to the US prematch coverage this morning. They said Arsenal's Pablo Mari got stabbed in the back.

I was listening thinking "What did they say about him? Who said it?"

Oh, wait. He really did get stabbed in the back.

The key thing with Newcastle is keeping players fit. They're a good team and can compete with anyone (could and perhaps should have beaten City too). The thing is they can actually sign players in Jan, good ones, that could see them over the line.

He's a very good forward and is scoring plenty of goals. He's just not Harland, and right now, not being Harland is making him look like shit.

Newcastle United finishing 4th would keep 'United' in the top 4 :p

Anyway, won't happen. This team is overachieving, relative to what is has. I'd take 7th and a cup run right now, if you offered it. Much will depend on January. If they bring in two or three more Bruno/Botman/Trippier level signings, and we're still in touch after the WC, we might be in business.

Our first eleven is decent but there is no depth and lots of weaknesses. Sean Longstaff and Joe Willow are regulars in this side FFS. You're absolutely right. Two or three key injuries and we'd plummet like a stone. If we can get to Jan in touch, and the owners decide the time is right to take, we might do something mental.

Can't see it, though. Not this year.

I can't wait for the draw. I need to get back to Las Vegas. I am going to try to watch some European tournament cup ties there next time.

Joe King, you may know the Crown & Anchor in Vegas. British pub open 24/7 & they show all the football matches. That's my spot in Vegas. That and the karaoke lounge in Ellis Island.

    What a British name.

I used to patronise a place called the "The One Crown" in Watford.

Dog and Duck. The King's Head. The Bull and Bollox. All great venues!!

I don't know what it is but the two times I went up to Cumbria (Carlisle in '16, Kendal in '17) I felt like that was the place for me. They had some pretty cool pubs in both places. The last one I went to in Kendal was one of the best pubs I've been to. I can't think of it now but I can find the name. I watched Liverpool beat Chelsea in there. I tried to take a short cut on the way back to the hotel and ended up walking around that little town for hours in the freezing rain lost. Not one of my best moves.

I just realized something. I went to three pubs in Kendal that night not counting my little hotel pub that seated like three people. It was all men in all three pubs except for two women behind the bar. I don't know if it was because of the football or what but that's pretty odd.

There was a pub in a place called Castletown which is where the Ripper Hoaxer was from.

They literally traced his accent to this place, Castletown and in the 1990s they did a documentary about it and filmed part of it in CastletownWorking Men's Club which was still segregated at the time....women were barred from the bar and sequestered in a small corner of the lounge :Jest:

Needless to say this did nothing to shake the cops (mistaken) belief that the fucking ripper MUST have been from Castletown

Which of course he wasn't. He was from Bradford.

Are you talking about that guy who left hoax messages who some police believed came from the Yorkshire Ripper?

I thought it sounded familiar. I know a fair bit about the "real" ripper case (and Slice's ongoing cover-up) but not so much the Sutcliffe case. I did see a decent enough movie about it years ago based on it. I found the most interesting part of it how some people were able to narrow down the accent/dialect to such a small geographical area. The movie could have been totally full of shit in their version, but in it they showed officers being on the same street on which he lived asking around and simply because he wasn't home at the time escaped simple questioning.

Accents are fascinating that way even if the film exaggerated the real investigation. I wouldn't be surprised if well trained people with some help could track down a few locales of where somebody is from/lives based upon an audio recording of their voice.

I've got my eye on Slice.....I've heard that traces of rubber from new Padel trainers were found all over those bodies after he ended their "whoring ways". After he won a recent competition he addressed his adoring fans with the words "Old Slut, Next Time, I Hope".....brazen.

The "amateurs" who traced that accent literally did a better job with a voice on a tape than an entire force did with an abundance of information. They noted the "snap" in the pronunciation of "SeptemBAH , OctoBAH" and deduced it was north of Middlesbrough but south of Newcastle.

That usually means Sunderland. Castletown is smack bang in Sunderland.

The amateurs sleuths were onto that guy like a flash but didn't have the DNA or the local cooperation to seal the deal.

The cops had Sutcliffe....HAD HIM and missed him repeatedly.

I'm certain that people knew who the hoaxer guy was but said ought because they didn't want their own town besmirched by either the notoriety of the "killer" or, later on, the notoriety of a "Hoaxer".

The police simply had too much information spread over too many locations.....they were burdened by a lack of automation, their own prejudices and personal shortcomings, etc. They really were thick as shit.....Jack Oldfield was a drunk with a bad heart and was none too bright. Dick Holland was just a crude dope who had shown his true colours when he participated in the demeaning of a particularly unfortunate victim called Marcella Claxton who was black, very ugly and had an IQ of about 85. The guy was just a thick lug. No good.

Even the female officers were hopeless.

Humble (the hoaxer) is from the estate outlined in red. Castletown is where the sleuths reckoned he was from..
