I know I am probably way in the minority here, but I never thought Marvis Frazier was all that bad. He was a good amateur and also beat Bonecrusher Smith, James Broad, Joe Bugner, Nino Ribalta and Quick Tillis at heavy and also had a win over Cruiser champ Bernard Benton...which wasn't a bad resume for a young fighter at that time. Sure...there were the losses to Holmes and Tyson...but there were plenty of heavies who were beaten up by one of those two during the 80's. And especially in the case of the Tyson fight...lots of Tyson's opponents didn't make it out of the first or second round...including Michael Spinks. (and before someone takes this to the extreme and accuses me of comparing Frazier to Spinks....I'm not...I'm just saying Frazier wasn't the only heavy to get blown out by Tyson during Iron Mike's prime). I always thought Smokin' Joe was a double-edged sword for Marvis. Sure...having the famous last name got him more TV time and probably better paydays than he would have gotten otherwise. But on the flip side, Marvis suffered from his Dad trying to mold him into a copy of his Smokin' 70s heavy self...even though Marvis didn't have the power or chin to pull it off at heavy. AND...with the extra exposure also came with an extra helping of criticism and "told you so's" when he lost. I always thought Frazier would have been much better off if he had moved down to Crusier after the Holmes fight rather than continue to compete at Heavy and could have been a serious contender and/or won a title there before Holyfield took over the division.
I heard Williams wants the rematch but he's having a difficult time getting Cintron back in the ring. :kidcool:
Camacho Jr. isn't the worst offender. The worst offender is Chavez Jr. PPV shows are built around him. Camacho Jr. was done as a featured fighter after the Leija fight. HBO gave up on him. Sure he was on undercard fights but as a main attraction that was pretty much it.
I chose Camacho Jr because in addition to his being a waste of talent, his fights aren't even entertaining. At least you get that much from most of Chavez Jr's cannon fodder tour, though there has been an occasional stinker. Plus - sadly enough - Chavez Jr is actually more accomplished as a fighter. Camacho Jr was given just as many opportunities and blew all of them.
Listening to Albert's call of the Oquendo debacle was kinda funny...swing and a miss by Showtime on that one.
Camacho Jr actually had some skills. But unfortunately, he was a total bitch. I might be in the minority here, but I don't think Chavez Jr is really so bad in terms of being forced down our throats - he's no world beater, but at least his fights aren't usually boring. Plus, a lot of his fights are their own PPV cards, so you don't have to bother with him if you don't want to. John Ruiz is the worst offender I can think of, possibly followed by Rocky Juarez.
That's my feeling on Chavez Jr., especially when he's the ppv main event. Everybody controls their own wallet, don't pay for it if you don't want to watch. It's not like he's fighting on HBO...where, as a subscriber, I would be upset if he that's what I was paying for.
bad example. Etienne burst into the scene with an upset win over an heavily favored Lamont Brewster in a foy candidate. His next fight was an exciting blowout of fringe contender Cliff Couser. After that, he won yet another foy candidate vs Clay Bey. So while he wasn't very good, yet was considered as a contender at the time, Etienne made for great tv fights for a while.
Can you say most of the 2000 Olympians Lou Dibella signed? A lot of them started out on that HBO card at MSG and not many of them went very far in their careers.
Cmon man. They were speaking of him coming out of prison and smashing everyone in his path. I remember them Making comparisons to Iron Mike. Then when Oquendo found that on/off switch on top of his head all of those clowns had pie on their faces.
Precisely, whereas Camacho Jr received considerable amount of play on HBO, Showtime, regional networks... he was even in Resurrection Blvd at one point (and fought like a bitch on there as well). The biggest complaint regarding Chavez Jr was that he was taking away PPV undercard slots from more deserving fighters. However, the ratings suggest that there is a demand for him.
yes, but it was because Etienne had made his names winning two foy candidates and was hot shit before the Oquendo debacle. An exciting good american hw with charisma is worth a fortune to the tv executives, and that's why Showtime and HBO entered a bidding war for his service. He wasn't shoved down our throat, he was brought back on the network because he was exciting, kept winning and people wanted to see him. Then, after the Oquendo fight, he was brought back because he was exciting, win, lose or draw. After the Tyson fight he was used as a stepping stone by the like of Calvin Brock and Valuev
the one that always baffels me... Jamael mccline i feel like this guy gets more title shots, and big fights than anyone and really NEVER looks good
Because he's a choke artist and he's big. Promoters liked putting thier guy's against him because, after his usually fast start, Jameel would do nothing and make it looks like the other guy fought through adversity to get his win, and it makes them look like some kind of new age David
From a British-TV point of view, and most recently in a global sense, it has to be Audley Harrisson. The guy just would not fuck off. And even now he is talking about a return.
Its a fine line. Brock and Peter were both actually on the verge of losing, and badly. In both cases they did fight back through very real adversity. Mike Grant got up, but lost.
