Carlitos Way, like Crimson Tide, is a movie that I love. Carlitos Way is easily one of my top 10-20 all time favorite movies. But IMO, it's not even a top 10 movie of the 90s.

Sexy Beast is like a Taking Of Pelham 123 (the original obviously) ... Super entertaining, watchable movie, loads of fun but it's not a major, substantial work of art

This thread is about the greatest films ever made, the criteria should be exclusive ... The thread isn't my five favorite movies... Between Lawrence of Arabia and Pelham, I'd be more likely to watch Pelham but I know damned well LOA is a far more substantial work of art than Pelham

    5 greatest films? (English language)

    1) Godfather Saga
    2) Citizen Kane
    3) Dr. Strangelove
    4) Taxi Driver
    5) Lawrence of Arabia

It was just a list of my faves, I don't feel qualified to rate 'the best' tbh. Love sexy beast it's up there with glengarry glenross as the most quotable film ever and I think the pacing and editing is amazing too

Thinking about it i gotta defend carlitos way again - you can't get more cinematic than those long pacino tracking shots through all the gaudy reds and blues, mirrors and chrome, they're like touch of evil in bursting technicolor x10. So good- wish I could have them projected on my kitchen wall 24/7. They're such a perfect fit with the exuberant 70s Latino vibe too with the music and cocaine and girls in shiny hot pants, totally draws you into a world. The set piece action scenes are the best ive ever seen too, the way the camera takes you round the spaces and builds the tension....a man walking with a knife behind the main character in the reflection of sunglasses! The way the story starts at the finale then circles back tinges the whole thing yet somehow just adds to the tension...the classic noir trope of having the climax in grand central, such ott melancholy, 'escape to paradise', ridiculous idealisation, you can see through it yet de Palma's so masterful he makes you feel it anyway. Proper cinema, 9 thumbs up

I'm surprised Chariots of Fire isn't getting more love. That film is a classic!

Most all time great movies I can see the greatness in, even if I'm not a fan. I've never been able to see the brilliance in the movie itself.... only in Deniro's acting.

Surprising, I think its pretty much perfect. Another one where the camera work takes you into a world, all those shots through travis' vision where it'll be a conventional wide shot then the camera will focus in and track the seediest thing in the streetscape because that's all he sees. the perpetual darkness. the way when travis is interacting with other people, the camera will suddenly zone out into a shot of an empty hallway or an alcaselza dissolving in a glass of water. The talking to himself in the mirror, the bit where the editing repeats the line when he's lying in bed to express how often he's been repeating it to himself in his head. The soundtrack is 5 star too

I also think its a great representation of New York City....at a time when New York City was horrible, circa 1973-75.

There´s irony in that because Paul Schraeder originally set the story in Los Angeles...

I would nominate Godfather also. I agree Vito and Sonny were corny as fuck, but the rest of the characters (Barzini, Michael, Fredo..!) and most importantly the plot and development through the movie is spectacular.

It was filmed back in the 70s and pretty much every movie before or since is loaded with cheese too.

 difference of opinion.. i just dont get it. Like DM said, he's all shuffly and with that cheesy whiny voice, and the weird little spaz outs that his otherwise calm as shit character has. I admit though at times, like sitting in the negotiations he plays quite well.

I think Scorsese was too green. Not sure if I am explaining this right. Taxi Drives is loved by a certain type of person IMO. The movie is great and very good. But it's great more because at times we can identify with the words coming out of Deniro's face. But i thought the camera work and some of the takes were amateurish as in most of Scorsese's early work. He really has improved greatly as a director.

I would agree that Santino (James Caan) was the weakest of the main characters (he received an academy award for his role though...surprisingly). He was good and played he role well, but it wasn't a deep role.

Brando was excellent as Vito...I can't see why anyone would say otherwise. Look at that subtle look he gave Sonny during the Solazzo briefing, prior to actually meeting the Turk. He asked Sonny's opinion on whether they should go into the drug trade and Santino's response was so rudimentary that Vito looked at him with disgust. But the disgust in his eyes was so subtle. it was understated and fleeting. Great work all around.

I don't particularly identify with the words coming out of DeNiro's mouth, frankly... It's the film's unflinching portrait of isolation, loneliness, awkwardness and the creeping madness associated with those things that is to me utterly remarkable... The roughness of the film is married perfectly to the time in which it takes place

I thought James Caan did just fine as Sonny and Brando was fantastic as Vito... The film is a masterpiece, the story, the cast, the visuals, the music, all of it irreplaceable
