Nice post! Thanks for that dude. Interesting about the identity crisis thing, they did keep saying they were "from New York", even though they were always talking about Connecticut.

The second round of the UEFA Europa League is about to kick off tomorrow and I am getting the sense that no one here has caught Europa Cup fever yet. What the hell is the matter with you people? :pathetic:

    You're welcome, man

    LOL, I'm not surprised

If I was over there and someone asked me "where in America are you from", I would basically assume they knew nothing of Connecticut and just say "near New York"

I'll start catching it when it becomes painfully evident that it's where Celtic might be lucky enough to end up if they play as best as they possibly can:giggle:

We had one of the guys from Denver work with us for six months, he was a cool guy, sound as a pound, and he really tried to immerse himself in British culture (he was a QPR fan by the time he left - job done. He was actually considering calling his newborn son Joey after Mr Barton ). Anyway, this guy always entered our Fifa league and he was fucking shit, plus he really hadn't grasped the rules of football at that point, yet he always INSISTED on being Colorado Rapids, he'd lose every game 7-0 or something and we were like "dude, just be Barcelona or something", but he always said "No, the Rapids are my teeeeaaaam bro!".

    exactly

States don't mean anything to somebody from Europe unless it's Texas or California or Florida

Cities describe where you live better to a foreigner

As demented as it is, I did a "Manager" career on FIFA 13 and I was hired by Aberdeen... I managed them to a couple of league titles and a Europa championship... I couldn't bring myself to defeat Celtic, though, so I purposely lost or got a draw:lol:

get the owner to spend money on transfers
give playing time or transfer listings to unhappy players
you can obviously change up formations, lineups, etc
you have to "talk to the press"

It's kind of a pain in the ass

After my storybook success at Aberdeen, I was hired by Newcastle and had them in first place... Got sick of it and haven't played "manager" modesince last year

To be honest, "from California" goes down pretty well in the UK. They seem to think it is some beach paradise. But in further conversation I am honest about being from a dusty, redneck, oilfield shithole called Bakersfield that is unbearably hot three months out of the year. The funny thing about Brits always referencing "the beach" in regards to where I am from is that anyone from just about any area of England is actually closer to a beach than I am.

A lot of people probably picture places like Malibu when you say California.

In Bill Bryson's non fiction book "Among The Thugs" he talks about running into a gangly, unkempt, high strung young man from Grimsby at the '88 Euros. He refers to him as "Grimsby." In one hilarious account, Grimsby spotted a group of male Dutch football fans near the dance floor of a pub and decided that he was going to kick all of their asses just for being Dutch. He went into them with fists and elbows swinging. The Dutch men who were all very tall and burly never even felt the effects of the attack as they just absorbed him, hugged him, patted him on the head and then brushed him aside and continued talking as Grimsby had to make the walk of shame back to the other side of the pub.

I have the book but I read it so long ago I don't remember many details.

From the little I've heard about the film Cohen's character is soccer hooligan in the 1980's. It wouldn't surprise me if some parts of the movie were influenced by Bryson's book, but that's just me speculating.

Reading a bit more about it:

"Baron Cohen also scouted Scunthorpe, Hull and Newcastle as potential locations for the film."

Damn it, Feebs missed out on a chance of being an extra or something. :l3:

They aren't in a "league" on the game:laugh11:

They are in a section called "rest of world" with notable teams in less notable leagues (or at least one where people can't afford FIFA lol) like Boca, River Plate, Kaiser Chiefs

Scunthorpe was where they filmed "This is England" and the TV series that followed (along with parts in Nottingham.) The kid had no acting experience. He went into the audition and demanded money just for showing up to the audition and they hired him on the spot. Similar to Larry Clarke when he was filming the controversial film "Kids." He saw a kid doing skateboard tricks in the park. Every time he would fall or mess up he would loudly and profusely swear a river of curse words. Clarke hired him right there as the lead role in the film.

Alan Wilson, Edinburgh, said: “Having just watched the World Cup and then tuned in to see Celtic in the Champions League, I have been left deflated. It is like going to bed with Miss World and waking up with your missus.”

I would take a team and sell all of it's best players. I would purchases the cheapest and worst i could find at each position with one exception. I would get a top quality striker that could still score even if surrounded by garbage. He would always be on the bench though.

The only time he would be subbed on is when the game is already lost. So the guy would come on and from time to time get a goal or two back. He'd be the only player to ever make an impact on a match but he'd never get a start.

The media reaction would be great.

The Houston Astros did that sometime around 2002 or so. Sold all expensive players. Brought in no names. No one on their entire roster one year had more than a one year contract. Of course they were horrible that year. But they were in the World Series three years later with those players.

They lost that WS to the Chicago White Cocks and have gone back to being garbage ever since.
