Nigeria plays Sweden today in Women's WC action. Hopefully they wears polar opposite colors otherwise i can forsee the ref having trouble telling the teams apart.

Yeah I certainly didn't agree with that. I don't think the majority of viewers did either but at the same time I didn't see it as an ootrage. Nine times out of ten it's probably going to somebody who at least made it to the final. Messi was Argentina's best player while with Germany there was a handful of players who could have been considered deserving. Nobody really stood out as head and shoulders above the rest as it was a team effort. Neuer possibly was the most important, but we know these kinds of awards rarely go to keepers.

So in the end while it was probably more of a marketing decision there is still a reasonably good argument for having Messi as player of the tournament.

I thought Neuer was the standout player of the last World Cup. Forgetting their goalkeeper, the team which won it did so because they were a great team rather than a side with one or two great individuals, and it was great to see.

    England vs France taenicht...

Lottae plastic pitches in Canada, Ah'm worried fer ma fellow Britons legs in case they get friction burns, like.

'Megan Rapinoe scored twice as the USA started their Women's World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Australia.

The number two ranked team in the world are early leaders of Group D, following Sweden's 3-3 draw with Nigeria.

Rapinoe opened the scoring for the USA and - despite Lisa De Vanna's equaliser for Australia - she had her second after the break, before Christen Press put the game out of reach in Winnipeg.

In Group C Japan beat Switzerland 1-0, while Cameroon thrashed Ecuador 6-0.

Reigning champions Japan, who beat the USA in the 2011 final, secured three points through Aya Miyama's first-half penalty in Vancouver.

The USA are pre-tournament favourites in Canada, alongside Germany, who recorded an emphatic 10-0 win over Ivory Coast on Sunday night.

Jill Ellis's side have not been handed a straightforward group though, with this victory over 10th-ranked Australia coming before Friday night's game with fifth-best team in the world Sweden.

"We were a bit nervous. We couldn't play a lot worse at times,'' said Rapinoe, 29.

"But we settled in a bit and we were able to get some goals. Three points, that's most important, especially in this group that's shaping up a little weird."'

If the jazz trio played a modal bit in the key of "A" then it might sound ok...

The highland bagpipes are permanently stuck with droning Baritone "A" and you can't change it ... So the instrument becomes a massive nuisance in any setting involving keys unrelated to "A" ... Basically you can sort of get away with "D" and "E" at best... "F" possibly... Anything else is nightmare stuff which is why bagpipes appear outside of the context of a bagpipe band about as often as Halley's Comet stops by ... There was actually a dude named Rufus Harley who played the bagpipes in a jazz context... A novel but utterly intolerable idea

Can't you make bagpipes different keys? Not that itd be worth it, they sound heavy shite. There's a bagpipe band here called 'red hot chili pipers' (clever huh?) who plays loads of popular songs, but maybe they just play all of 'em in A.

The highland pipes are set permanently to a drone of A and the melody notes are meant to fit that same key... No matter what you do that droning "A" will always be there... In a band context you could possibly make up for that by having everything else way fucking loud to try and drown out the drone ... Of course then you risk drowning out the melody notes as well... Your best bet is to play Uileann Pipes or some other pipes in the bag family that don't use the drone ... Basically unless the song is predominantly related to "A", it will sound shite... I'd imagine anybody with the ears required to withstand something like the Red Hot Chili Pipers probably wouldn't notice a thing like dissonance to begin with

 The drone is there the whole song but because the song itself is in a key that contains the drone note, the drone is unobtrusive ... Jesus that's some heavy shite music

Just to further irritate the rest if the world, the pipes "A" is tuned higher as a matter of some stupid modern custom which means that "A" on those fucking pipes is like B flat on a normal instrument ... The pipes were always tuned to proper A until the last century for whatever stupid fuck reason

When I heard that recording I said immediately "that's not A, what the fuck?" and I found that pipes are generally now tuned too high for whatever reason... All these years I just assume "Long Way To The Top" was just a slightly sped up recording

There's definitely something in the DNA I think that sort of gets triggered when you hear Celtic sounds like that ... Even if you aren't in the mood for it, it seems "meant to be" somehow like your brain was meant to hear it ... Other Irish and Scots descendants have agreed with me on that... It's not music I listen to often but when I hear it, it feels comfortable
