Having said that, Liverpool won't win the league. They still look short of Chelsea or City level solidity at the back, their midfield will take a while to settle in, and they lack a certain intangible special finisher..oh, wait...doubt Balotelli will fill those shoes

You can't sell and win. IF you change the winning formula you lose. Simple.

Once Suarez bit that guinea cunt, I knew we were in trouble.

You can never go like for like with a player of the calibre of a Luis Suarez. They should have at least tried for the best they could find. Maybe a Falcao or Cavani?

Last year the general thought was Liverpool lost out because they couldn't protect a lead. They dropped points due to defensive collapses and lack of concentration. If they held on to Suarez they could have addressed that issue. Where do the goals come from now though?

It's not that they've purchased bad players (too early to tell) but how many of them seemed to satisfy a direct need? It's like they went on a shopping spree because they figured they had to spend the money on something, not unlike Tottenham last year.

They tried for Cavani and Falcao. I believe they did, at least. They also went for Origi but the best they could do was to let Lille keep him a year more.

The goals will have to come from all over now, Lambert, Sturridge, Sterling, Henderson, Markovic, you name it.

Liverpool have the Champions League too. One of Liverpools "direct needs" is going to be plain and simple depth. Tottenham went and did scattergun despite not having CL football. Liverpool needed bodies and they needed them while their £75m was worth £75m and while they were not seen as "desperate" to spunk the LOT on one man, like United just did.

Not one of Tottenhams signings was a guy proven in the League or for that matter the Champions League.

Not one of Tottenhams signings was subject to the sort of painstaking persistence that the Lovren and Moreno deals were. That suggests not just a direct need but a very particular signing was sought after for that need.

I think the urge in the papers {not you, but the papers} is to declare "Just like Tottenham" despite the fact that Liverpool are 1-1 after two games with absolutely no time to bed these guys in.

UCL is great, but will they be there next year? I certainly hope so but they're going to have to get the better the likes of Man City and Chelsea in order to. I don't know that their signings have put them close enough.

Sell to buy is a bust.

I think it was John Maynard Keynes who said that the bubble never lasts forever but it lasts longer than the solvency of those detracting from it.

Its the same here. Liverpool would have had to keep Suarez and then go out and buy James and Falcao and................

Man City can "Afford" to take a guy like Jovetic and put him on big money and keep him on ice long enough to be of some use to them.

UCL is good....will Liverpool be there next year? Hard to say. I think so. Its become such a fucking tightrope. All the clubs bar City and Chelsea are basically up against it. All Liverpool can do is do their best and try to walk the line, try to get as much money from the UCL as possible.

I think Pool might have a problem signing top talent next year if they don't have UCL though. It's a rock and a hard place situation.

I agree that all they can really do is put their best effort on the field every match. Even if they win the Arsenal 4th place trophy it will be good for next season. They'll have champions league money and champions league to play in. (plus the additional year of gelling)

Bronson Pinchot is an actor known for playing "Balky" on a very shitty American sitcom that somehow went on for ages and ages.

I didn't make the tag, btw. Pretty sure it was a North American though.

Talking about the business side of football(or any sport) bores me to tears but one quick reminder. We finished 16th place in '03-'04. Sold Rooney that summer and finished 4th the following season. In no way am I saying that we were better off without him. But in a year where we were supposed to be in a definite relegation battle, we finished top 4.

Suarez was signed in the depths of such a depression. Look at the guys that Roberto Martinez has signed...not just at Everton but at Wigan...look at guys Atletico Madrid signed from nowhere.....the talent is there. Find it early, find it cheap, sign it. Its doable...does Rodgers have the gimlet eye for such deals, its hard to say.

Sadly finding the talent is only half the problem. Keeping it when the likes of Real Madrid show interest is another.

That was an odd period though. Chelsea were just starting, Spurs were nowhere, Liverpool were in the first year of Benitez and City weren't even in the same division. United won the league two seasons later and Everton Liverpool fought it out for 4th/5th.

I think Di Maria will be a bust for United. Am still confused why they gave Valencia a fat new contract.

Celtic-Maribor finely poised, Maribor better in possession but less dangerous in front of goal.

At first I thought it was funny, now I almost pity Man U. This is flat out embarrassing.

In fairness, Celtic have played better in the second half so far, they're both poor but that's their level.
Not as funny as Man U losing 1-0 to MK Dons...

Van Gaal might be sacked by next week at this rate.

If Man U loses to a third division team
