    Candidate Central
    A Word From Ron Paul
Ron Paul 03.04.08, 3:20 PM ET

Trailwatch reached out to each of the remaining presidential campaigns and offered them an unedited forum in which they could address voters. As he was when we requested information for our Candidate Screener, Ron Paul was the first candidate to respond to our offer. We asked each campaign to submit 500 to 1,000 words on the issues they believe are the most important ones facing the nation at this moment in time. Here is what Ron Paul had to say.
    --Paul M. Murdock
    ------------------------------

America became the greatest, most prosperous nation in history through low taxes, constitutionally limited government, personal freedom and a belief in sound money. I decided to run for president because I am deeply concerned that the conservative movement has drifted away from these principles that we once so fiercely defended. Deficits have exploded, entitlements are out of control and our personal liberties are threatened like never before.

The current state of our economy drives home the hard truth that living beyond our means has caught up to us. Oil is over $100 a barrel, the housing market is in sharp decline and the dollar is in a free fall.

The national debt now stands in excess of $9 trillion, more than $30,000 per person. The total future debt obligations of the United States, including entitlements, are estimated at around $59 trillion, which equates to over $500,000 per household. Social Security and Medicare will likely consume the entire federal budget by 2040, threatening the average American with an impossible tax burden.

As I said this past November to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, "We're indeed between a rock and a hard place, and we don't talk about how we got here; we talk about how we are going to patch it up." The "solutions" proposed so far--stimulus packages, bailouts and interest rate cuts--just amount to printing more money, which will lead to greater currency devaluation, contribute to the rising costs of living, and further squeeze the middle class and our senior citizens.

This is the first time in over 100 years that monetary policy is being discussed in earnest during a presidential campaign. Money is the lifeblood of any economy, and control over a nation's currency means control over its economic well-being. Fed bankers quite literally determine the value of our money by controlling the supply of dollars and establishing interest rates. Their actions can make you richer or poorer overnight, in terms of the value of your savings and the buying power of your paycheck. For over 30 years, I have been urging all Americans to educate themselves about monetary policy in order to better understand how a small group of unelected individuals at the Fed and the Treasury Department wield tremendous power over our lives.

In order to immediately strengthen the economy and lay the groundwork for continued prosperity, I have proposed a four-part plan that involves lower taxes, less spending, a sound monetary policy and regulatory reform.

We can take several immediate steps to reform our archaic tax system and give Americans back the fruits of their labor. I will work to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, including a repeal of the estate tax, and I will fight to end taxes on Social Security benefits and income derived from tips. I also believe that if we are to truly address the housing crisis, we will end taxes on forgiven mortgage debt, which is considered "income."

The most permanent tax reform we can undertake, though, is to end the income tax and abolish the IRS. We could remove the entire personal income tax-funded portion of the budget and the federal government would still receive roughly the same revenues that it did during the Clinton years.

And we could do this without even touching Social Security and Medicare.

The key to tax reform lies in spending reform. It's time to cut back on our trillion-dollar overseas budget and use that money to secure the programs Washington has forced so many citizens to depend on. By doing this, we can let younger generations opt out of these programs and save for their own retirements and health care needs. As president, I will also veto any unbalanced budget and demand that Congress address wasteful spending.

Lower taxes and less government spending will put more money in your pocket. A sound monetary policy will increase the value of that money and drive down the costs of living.

Immediate monetary reform can be achieved by requiring transparency at the Fed. All Federal Reserve meetings should be televised just like the proceedings of Congress, and they should once again make all information on the money supply available. I also favor legalizing competing currencies.

History is replete with examples of the inevitable failure of paper money systems, from our own founding days, to inter-war Germany, to the monetary crisis of 1970s Latin America.

However, I believe that for our economy to be secure in the long term, Congress must reassert its authority and end the unconstitutional Federal Reserve.

Finally, we must be willing to undertake regulatory reform. It would serve us well to revisit the myriad federal regulations that have stymied the innovative spirit of the American people.

One of the most damaging regulations imposed on the American people is the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. A survey by Financial Executives International put the average cost of compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley at $4.4 million, while the American Economics Association estimates the Act could cost American companies as much as $35 billion. A study by the prestigious Wharton Business School found that the number of American companies delisting from public stock exchanges nearly tripled the year after Sarbanes-Oxley became law. One of the best things Congress could do for the American economy is to repeal this damaging legislation.

According to David Walker, former head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office, "We are mortgaging the future of our children and grandchildren at record rates, and that is not only an issue of fiscal irresponsibility, it's an issue of immorality."

Unless we embrace fundamental reforms, we will be caught in a financial storm that will humble this great country as no foreign enemy ever could.

However, we can find safe harbor in our ideals. Reclaiming our historic legacy of principled commitment to liberty will, once again, unleash the innovative spirit that propelled our nation to heights of prosperity never before achieved in human history.

Whatever happened to Ron Paul? Texan's presidential campaign makes lasting impact on his foot soldiers

WASHINGTON - The excitement of Rep. Ron Paul’s unorthodox presidential campaign has faded since last fall. The chances were always slim that Paul would get to go to the White House to collect President Bush’s endorsement, as Sen. John McCain did Wednesday.

But Paul scored a victory Tuesday night, crushing challenger Chris Peden in the Republican primary in his Texas congressional district.

Paul’s victory in his heavily Republican district means the 33-year House veteran will be around for at least another two years to voice his dismay both at America’s overseas entanglements and at Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke’s policies.

Despite McCain having clinched the nomination, Paul said Wednesday he’ll continue his Republican presidential bid.

“I’m still involved, nothing has changed,†he said in an interview just off the House floor Wednesday afternoon. “For the last several weeks, I’ve concentrated on Texas. Even though I was concentrating on my district, I had some pretty big rallies (outside his district). I was at the University of Texas and we had 5,000 people show up.â€

Paul said he planned to continue travelling around the country spreading his limited government creed.

Will he speak at the convention?
The Texan said he hadn’t spoken to McCain recently, but would like to address the Republican national convention this summer “if somebody wanted me to. It would be nice. I always assumed it would be unlikely. They might not want to me to.†He said he had 40 or 50 delegates pledged to him.

Paul also said he’d probably not place a phone call to McCain to congratulate him on clinching the Republican nomination.

“I just never call anybody. I’m just not good calling up people†he explained.
He can not support McCain because “I don’t consider his positions to be part of the traditional Republican conservative platform.â€

The 33-year House veteran said he can’t simply go back to the gadfly role that he had before launching his presidential bid. “I can’t revert to it. It’ll never be the same again. Life has changed,†he said. “Off and on for the 30 years, I’ve been in and out of office, I’ve asked the same questions and made the same points and there was no attention paid to it. But the last two times I’ve quizzed Bernanke, I got national coverage, I get phone calls, people from the trading pits in Chicago react to it. They cheer me on. â€

So, he concluded, “life will never be the same again. Even if I pretend I’m going to do the same thing, the message is out of the box. It’s out there and that’s exactly a goal we’ve always had: to get people to pay attention to a strictly limited government approach.â€

What lasting impact for Paul campaign?
But what will be the lasting impact of Paul’s candidacy?

For some of Paul's foot soldiers, his bid for the nomination has changed their careers.

Paul Dorr, a political consultant based in Ocheyedan, Iowa, was the field director for Paul’s campaign in that state.

Before working for Paul, Dorr had been making his living helping voters defeat school bond measures in local elections throughout the Midwest.
Dorr said Wednesday that through his work on the Paul campaign he met people across the nation who want his help in defeating ballot measures and curbing the growth of local governments. “Personally it’s been beneficial to me,†Dorr said.

He may branch out from working only on school bond issues to opposing ballot measures to fund new jails and courthouses.

    Effect of credit crunch
Dorr said that with the sub-prime crisis and the distress in credit markets, people across the country are now worried about the long-term indebtedness of their towns, counties, and school districts.

“The housing bubble gave a false sense of prosperity for so long,†Dorr said. As a result, local governments have been spending freely and “borrowing against perceived wealth.â€

Paul’s campaign, he said, has “opened people’s consciousness†to the idea that “our fiat money system is destroying the middle class.â€

The credit crisis coincided nicely with Paul’s campaign and its emphasis on excess borrowing and the depreciation of the dollar. Dorr said people are deciding that “maybe it’s time to start starving local government a bit more.â€

And Dorr will be there to help them.

One of the idealistic young people who worked for the Paul campaign, Iowa State University student Jacob Bofferding, said he’ll carry on Paul’s crusade by working on the state legislative campaign of Eric Cooper, the faculty advisor for the Ron Paul student group which Bofferding led at Iowa State.
Cooper is running for state representative as a Libertarian.

Bofferding said it is unlikely that he’ll work on a national campaign this year “unless I really fall in love with the Libertarian Party nominee.â€

Not keen on McCain or Obama
Bofferding is fairly sure he will vote for the Libertarian party nominee. “I would rather sell my soul than compromise my values by voting for McCain or Obama,†said Bofferding.

“McCain openly talks about staying in Iraq for 100 years, with the burden, of course, being on the American taxpayer,†Bofferding complained.

And Democrat Barack Obama is no better, in Bofferding’s view. “Obama still votes for war funding and champions bills like the Global Poverty Act that mandate billions more of foreign aid to be run through the United Nations,†he said.

Bofferding said his many hours of volunteer labor for Paul's campaign have, “made me permanently cynical, as I'm doomed to never approve of the drones and demagogues we're sending to Washington. I'm also able to take a much more critical approaching to daily economic news, such as the many rash moves made by the Federal Reserve.â€

He added, “I would consider a career in politics if I even thought it possible for an honest man to break through the Establishment. The way Paul was treated by his own party and the media makes that unlikely. John McCain snickered at Paul on stage at every debate, and Mitt Romney even said in an interview ‘Ron Paul deserves to be laughed at.’"

He added, "Conditions in this country will have to improve before the American people accept an intellectual campaign similar to Paul's, versus the personality cult of Obama.â€

Bofferding sounds pessimistic, although he seems to wish he weren’t: “I hate to say that spreading the message of liberty is a waste of time, but it certainly does not sound like a fun job to me considering the war-hungry, government-dependent attitudes of Americans.â€

    Interesting.

Now I was thinking, what are Paul's chances at a VP bid? I think he's too controversial for that. I think a cabinet position suits him well.

Well, he said that about McCain and the war. Maybe a Democrat?

Does Paul have ANY friends in Washington that can get him a cabinet(economic advisor) seat?

Rand Paul: Is the Revolution Over or Just Beginning?

Posted March 8th, 2008 by manystrom by Rand Paul MD | March 8, 2008

Reports that Ron Paul has quit the Presidential Race remind me of Mark Twain's famous quote, "Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." The Ron Paul Presidential campaign continues, albeit at a different pace.
    What does that mean?

Ron Paul will continue to contest the remaining primaries. Ron Paul's name will be on all the remaining state ballots. Ron Paul volunteers are encouraged to become precinct captains, delegates to state and national conventions, and to try pass Constitutional proposals to each state's Republican platform.

For example, volunteers in each state should try to attach amendments such as the following: Republicans believe that war should only be fought after a proper Declaration of War by Congress. Another possible platform idea is that: Republican Congressmen are expected to vote against any federal budget, Republican or Democrat, that is not balanced.
Want to have some fun? Just imagine the fun when the debate begins on these ideas.

Is Ron Paul still campaigning for president? Yes. Ron Paul has tentative plans to campaign in Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Ron Paul will also likely appear in other states that have remaining primaries.

The press is reporting that Ron Paul has quit the race. This is not true. Ron Paul's video simply acknowledges that the campaign will continue but will also transform into additional activities such as education and supporting other candidates. In Kentucky we just held precinct conventions and Ron Paul Republicans won hundreds of precinct captains. In Kyle Texas, Craig Young upset the establishment choice for Republican County Chairman.
The Ron Paul Revolution lives on! Victory comes in many forms. Help shape what the Ron Paul revolution becomes.

The Ron Paul Campaign: The Glass is Half Full (3/17/08)

    By Rand Paul, MD
Analysis of Ron Paul's success or failure all seem to miss the mark. Many critics point to this or that ad or this or that tactic that prevented victory. I think such analysis misses the forest for the trees.

I believe that no candidate can win the presidency without the day in and day out constant television coverage. In other words, unless the media grants you first tier coverage, the electorate will not vote for you in significant numbers. A large percentage of voters will not vote for a candidate they don't believe can win and that belief in "winnability" is still entirely controlled by the MSM.

That said, I think we should revel in the extraordinary successes of the campaign.

Ron Paul began with nearly zero name recognition and was relegated from the beginning by all MSM media to the second tier. I believe pundits should recognize the great strides in achieving between 5 and 10% of the vote in almost every state and receiving 11% in a Rasmussen poll running as a third party candidate. Not to mention over 20% in several caucus states, including second place in Nevada, Montana, and Louisiana.
Ron Paul's name recognition nationally now likely exceeds 50% of the electorate.

Any analysis must begin by acknowledging that many better-known US Senators and Governors received less of the popular vote. Many such as Biden and Dodd received less than 1% even though they have been staples of the Sunday morning news programs for decades. Not to mention the fact that Ron Paul trounced candidates with far greater name recognition such as Fred Thompson and Rudy Guliani.

I believe Ron Paul gained nearly the maximum possible vote in a Republican Party primary. Polls in NH show that only 6% of Republicans believe in immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Nearly 50% believe in some in-between position or reassessment of war strategy. About 30% believe in "staying the course" no matter what.

In Michigan, 37% of the Republicans expressed displeasure about the Iraq War and the vast majority of these same people voted for McCain. I believe his image as someone who will challenge Bush and the establishment blinded these voters to his public comments on continuing the war for 100 years if necessary. I also believe if the poll questions asked about "immediate withdrawal" that the percentage in the Republican primary is closer to 6% nationally.

After the last NH presidential debate, I turned around to Chris Matthews and tried to get him to host Ron Paul because Fox was excluding us the next night. His eyes glazed over a bit and he thought about Ron Paul and the Iraq war. You could tell by his response. He said, you know, Ronald Reagan probably wouldn't have gotten us into the Iraq War. Trying to be agreeable, I nodded my head. He then followed by adding that if McCain had been president we also probably wouldn't have gone into Iraq.

I shook my head in disbelief and reminded him that the day before McCain had made the comment that he would keep the troops in Iraq for 100 years. Matthews hemmed and hawed and said, "Oh, he's just being a good soldier now."

My take, Matthews and the liberals in the media love McCain so much for his pandering to their global warming agenda that they simply give him a pass on the war.

In the final analysis, I believe about 5-10% of the Republican Party are ready for a non-interventionist foreign policy and Ron Paul got that vote. A significant portion of the electorate heard Ron Paul's chastisement on the huge federal deficits and nodded their heads in agreement. Innumerable Republicans come up to me and love much of the Ron Paul message, but can't quite come to agree with the foreign policy of non-intervention.

On foreign policy, at some level, they listened to the message about the erosion of our civil liberties but could not escape the image of helicopters fleeing the embassy in Saigon in 1975. This image still bothers many Republicans and they can't embrace a quick exit from Iraq even if they know in their heart of hearts we need to leave.

My interpretation of the Ron Paul Revolution, though a biased one as the son of the candidate is that we should rejoice in getting 5-10% of the vote given that we got 1/1000th of the media attention and did not get enough attention to enter the realms of winnability in the public's mind.

To me, though, the campaign remains an unqualified success. My prediction for 2008: an utter crushing defeat for Republicans. Not out of anger for Ron Paul's loss, I think he won, but because Republicans are failing on two fronts: not living up to the promises of limited government and balanced budgets and failing to understand how unpopular the Iraq War has become.

One last prediction! We will elect at least one Ron Paul Republican to Congress this year.
