Hmm...didn't I say that Hagler would stop Pacquiao in the mid rounds? Perhaps I've forgotten my pick in this matchup...:scratcher:

Agreed. The expression I use is "On Spec".

"On Spec", Vitali is 6'8", 250lbs, great chin, heavy hands, good variety, very awkward, huge reach, above average handspeed = problems for anyone.

"On Spec", Hearns is 6'1", very fast hands, super reach at the weight, bomb in his right glove, above-average chin, very very dangerous.

"On Spec", JC Chavez is teak-tough, great chin, great stamina, excellent left hand, upstairs and down, very determined and very strong = problems for anone.

You have to look at what the individual brings. Sure, a car that is built in a garage by enthusiasts who know their business might not have any track record or fancy name or brand name, but that doesn't mean it doesn't drive fast. It's like no-name stuff in a hardware store. A sledge-hammer doesn't have to have a known brand name for you to know that if you drop it on your foot that you are going to break your foot.

Sometimes, you just know by looking at a thing, that it will work. I know by looking at a nut-cracker that it will work. Its simple physics. Long levers closing into a small space exert pressure = cracked nut.

Good chin, long arms, heavy hands, good speed = ISSUES for anyone, irrespective of brand, or lore, or resume or anything. Specifications don't determine who will win a fight, but they give us a good idea of what chances a certain fighter will have. How they apply those specifications will give us another clue.

Time-honoured and respected specifications applied through what we know to be an unusual or different style mean that fighter is going to be a handful for anyone.

For Manny Pacquaio, a 6'1" opponent who is just as fast, way more powerful, has a fast jab and won't fall apart at the first sign of trouble might just be somebody who can knock Pac the fuck out.

Hearns would have taken Maggotrito out in around exactly oh, 2-3 rounds.

Of course it was. I made it. :nono:

Anytime there is a "shock" in boxing, it's because we failed to apply most of what has been said in the various posts above.

If we applied the "specification" test with the "style" test and got "good" answers or results for the fighter in question, we wouldn't be so shocked when certain fights go a particular way.

It is of course an "art" and not a "science". There are other factors, such as Angulo vs Kirkland, where Angulo had not fought for a long time etc etc.
