Yeah, it was a great idea by Godfather.

This thread is good though, when you really don't feel like going into detail and just rattle off what you've watched recently.

I've seen it before, obviously, but it was on recently and I had nothing else to do so I watched it. IMO, this had the potential to be a real disaster, an after school special kind of film. What saves the film is Edward Norton's earnest performance, which conveys a depth that would be pretty much absent if you just read the script on paper. The characters are very cliched... Their motivations blatantly obvious... Fairuza Balk is awful and over-the-top as the obnoxious girlfriend, Stacey Keach (a great actor, btw) is very convincing in his small role as the neo-nazi elder statesman... Edward Furlong is hopeless, whiny, and unconvincing as the little brother... The way the story unfolds is one big cliche, as well... The ending seems contrived to me, like they were aware their story was a little too cute and they needed to make it dark and "meaningful" ... This could have been a really bad film... Edward Norton saved it... A lesser actor in this film and it would have been completely forgotten, IMO... I have seen it rated 4 and half stars out of 5... 9.5 out of 10... I just don't see how that is possible... The ending is the only real surprise in the film and two key actors give horrendous performances... The story is predictable... It's just not a great film, it's not even close... It's a great performance, though

Sir, you don't do THAT KIND of lengthy, detailed review in this thread. :nono: You were supposed just to rate it: 7/10 and leave it at that in the Lazy Men's movie review thread!

    says who?

I'm not starting a whole new thread for what is really a short film review, especially on a film I assume most here have seen

I hear ya'. It's got some great scenes in it, but the sum of it's parts leave a little to be desired considering how highly it's ranked.

I thought the Gosling film "The Believer" did a more effective job of conveying similar subject matter, though it also has it's rough patches and frustrating moments in it.

    Exactly

I think people are ranking it so highly because of two things: Norton and the ease with which you can easily discern good from evil in the film because the characters are so glaringly obvious

Other than Norton's performance, I think that's what made it a good movie. It could have been just a "racism is bad mkay" type film.

No country for Old men - 7/10. Excellent! I can't really bring myself to rate it higher because there didn't feel like there was much to it. It's such a simple elemental story, not a whole lot of character development or introspection or any of that, like, gay stuff. I guess there's the subplot of Tommy Lee Jones' character coping with aging and cultural change in a traditional community, or whatev, but that seemed very secondary. That being said, as sparse as it was I don't think it could have been executed any better, it was at once stylized & completely believable. Maybe I should rate it higher. I'll give it a second watch. His bird was absolutely beautiful in it.

The Gray 8/10 very good film even though the wolf pack behaved quite too intelligent for my sense of disbelief.

Time Cop 7.5/10 rewatched this one after almost 20 years of having seeing it. It still works even with its now dated effects. Probably Van Damme's best film.

Margaret 6/10 watchable drama about a young college girl ( sexy Anna Paquin) who inadvertently causes that a bus driver (Mark Ruffalo) hits and kills a pedestrian and how this event affects her life. The film could have been great if the director would have edited out at least 45 minutes of meaningless subplots with her mom, boyfriends, lawyers, etc. At 2:25 running time is too damned long and drags.

Never understood that scene because I couldn't make out what I was seeing. But I think what it is is after a long and violent fight the wolf wounded layed down to die and can be seen taking his last breaths and Nesons was wounded as well and layed down on top of the wolf to die. Almost like a mutual respect thing them laying there together dying. Not sure if that's what it was meant to be or not.

I rate it a masterpiece, honestly... 10/10 ... The theme is that you can't stop what's coming and the Anton Chigurh character is sort of like the physical manifestation of chance... The whole thing is fantastic, to me... I was truly floored by it

i think i kinda got that. The thin veneer of control & meaning and how easily it can be swept away in the face of mindless/meaningless/indiscriminate/uncontrollable forces of nature/'evil' or sheer happenstance. Or, erm, something.

    Where's Ugo?

pretty much. At first you think no way Liam has a chance. But clearly he got his licks in. We don't know if he died or not.
