Shavers was extremely vulnerable in other areas though which explains his losses to these same guys... Jimmy Young unhesitantly picked shavers as the hardest hitter he ever faced and he got KOd by the guy... I believe Norton said the same ... Purely on a subjective level, my eyes tell me that guy was an utterly cartoonish puncher ... He lost to decent fighters because his stamina was shaky, his defense was average and his chin wasn't the best... Power is only one facet

Archie Moore in the book "In This Corner..." lavished endless praise on Lloyd Marshall (deservedly so, guy was a terrific fighter) but he had a winning record against Marshall... Archie couldn't get a damned thing done in three tries with Ezzard Charles yet he never mentioned the guy once

Saad had a great answer to this question about who hit the hardest, he laughed and said "I don't know, man... They all hit the same to me-- HARD"

It would be nice to have an equivalent of boxrec for these "best/fasted/hardest hitting/toughest/" fighters based upon their experience.

I suspect it would provide great entertainment. :l3:

Interesting point worth mentioning, Wayne McCullough said Erik Morales hit harder than Hamed, but that Naz was physically stronger

Well, it really doesn't matter what McCullough says, Morales has NO CASE WHATSOEVER over Hamed in terms of power. Morales was the better/greater fighter by far, but he sure as FUCK wasn't a better puncher.

My problem with this list is that it's a bit too biased in favor of the GREATER fighters.

For example, Marvin Hagler was NOT a better puncher than Edwin Rosario, or Tito. He was by far BETTER than them, but he didn't have as much pop.

To make a full list would be time consuming, but to me, the best punchers in history are:

    Jackson
    Hearns
    Foster
    Foreman
    Tyson
    Arguello
    Louis
    Robinson
Hamed: Listen, I hated the little fucker, but I honestly think he belongs near the top.
Lewis: Same as Hamed. I hated Lummox, but he's one of the best punchers of all time.

I'd say it matters a fair bit seeing as he went the distance with both, he has nothing to gain by placing one over the other either as they weren't disputed decisions.

So you're gonna take the WORD of a man over results that you actually SEE with your eyes?

Morales has no case over Hamed in terms of power. To even suggest so is ridiculous.

It's the equivalent of saying that Holy was a bigger puncher than Tyson.

Well the best way to measure them is results against common opponents. Off the top of my head I can only think of three that they share, McCullough, Barrera and Kelley. Morales took three rounds longer to get rid of Kelley, other than that there isn't a huge difference (notwithstanding the actual RESULTS of the Barrera fights, obviously). Regardless of all that, I agree with you in that it seemed Hamed hit harder, but it's an interesting observation nonetheless from a guy better placed than most to offer an opinion in the debate. Plus, as I said before, he has nothing to gain from putting one over the other either, he lost equally wide decisions to both.

REED Thinks McCullough Said it as a Way of DIMINISHING Hamed a Bit...

REED Recalls Hamed RIDICULING McCullough Pretty Harshly, in the Build Up to their Bout...Even Saying Something to the Effect of Wayne's WIFE Having Nightmares of Her Husband Getting KO'ed by Him...

Saying Morales Hit HARDER than Hamed is Prespeterous; but Considering the HISTORY btwn Hamed & McCullough, REED Can See Why he Said it...

Hagler was not a huge puncher, and he sure as hell aint among the top 100 puncher ever. What a joke of a list, it seems that they can't make the difference between puncher and ko artist. a guy like Provodnikov is a bigger puncher than Hagler p4p, but Hagler has a much better chance to ko guys, cause he's so much faster and smoother.

Roy is criminally low on that list. Perhaps people have this imagine of the older, pot shotting Roy.

Jones is the most devastating puncher in the history of 168.

And just in general, Roy's left hook is one of the potent weapons in the sport's history.

Yet they rank fuckin Jose Luis Ramirez above him? Laughable.

I'd argue that Corrales should have made the list.

Seems understandable to me. Morales beat the dog shit out of mccollough for 12 rounds. Hamed hit him with some big shots early on then coasted after r5. Is it shocking he remembered morales hittting him harder?

That's another angle too. If a fighter really dislikes one of their opponents they will make the same biased claims.

Despite this 'better puncher' shit, 'power' is easier to determine by looking at the results of fighting lesser opponents, not better ones. It's a lot harder to land your best shots on better fighters and therefore easier to skew the results.

I always liked this quote about Shavers from Cobb...
"Anybody can hit as hard as Earnie Shavers. The thing that makes Earnie Shavers so significant is that Earnie Shavers is gonna hit you that hard every single time he lays leather on you."

Shavers was terrifying. Something that seems unique to him is the number of his opponents that were out cold on their feet. Guys limp against the ropes or tottering on their feet before they face plant like a felled tree. They were knocked unconscious by shots that weren't even clean enough to physically knock them down.
