    Maybe you should try again

    quote by Jake:

"I've contacted other writers asking them if they were interested in covering his career, but that was the extent of it."

    That's PR. Any more questions?

It's PR when you get paid for it. Otherwise, it's helping out a friend.

And honestly, I don't recall a single fluff piece I've written on Viv. I caught a lot more flak for an article I did on Cory Spinks (after the Taylor fight) than for anything I've ever written on Viv. In fact, he's bitched at me a few times for NOT writing as if we were friends.

    Thanks, Jake.
Nothing yet on an eliminator with Ulrich but I asked him about it and he'd love the fight, but I do know he is fighting next in Beaumont against TBA.
I like to have fun in interviews, yeah.
I don't even watch boring interviews asking a fighter the same basic fill in the blank questions, and "thank you for joining us at blankboxing" etc.
I have gotten off a lot of technical questions a lot of viewers wouldn't understand a whole lot after consulting with guys like Joe Rein and Bill O'Neill and try now for more basic questions while going with it.
Stir it up and have some fun, create a bit of controversy and get people talking on the board, that's my style, yeah.
There are other sites like boxingscene where some of the interviews are mostly dreadfully boring, I mean really bland.
One of the exceptions is Eaner is pretty good.
Yeah I am out there with it, and I like to think I know what I'm talking about in a technical manner about some things whether readers will agree with that or not, and I like to have a good time with it is all.
They can watch it or choose not to, it's their choice, but I'm not changing as I'm gonna be in there winging for a several minutes everytime.

Damn, already 213 (and counting) posts and almost 1,200 views on a thread about Chris Henry, in little more than a day. Take a bow, Karl. :bears:

Has there been any on Henry? so far we've tackled ethics, joony's lack of ability to get a girl, Jake creating and not creating press press releases, and the creation of earth.

Yeah, Val and I made a few comments but that quickly ended once Karl got defensive and offered to have me give the guy tips providing I could get past him in the ring.

Of course the offer fell apart once I requested financial compensation.

It's not unusual that things fall apart at the negotiating table.

So introducing a writer to a fighter makes you a publicist?

Am I a publicist for introducing you to Steve Cunningham? Was Tony a publicist when he introduced you to Gato?

read slowly. He says he asked writers to write something on Vivian. That's a publicist. hell Steve Cunningham used to call Tony his publicist.

There's nothing unethical about asking a writer to cover a boxer that he has no fiduciary ties to.

So you're saying what Cupey asked of Karl is unethical? :dunno:

Yeah, but I did it all in one shot. I didn't go around stalking people before and after everyone of his fights (in and out of the ring).

Anyway, one thing I can proudly say is nobody's questioned my integrity in regards to any article written about him. When he was getting ready to fight Hatton, I offered Ricky's side of the story just as much as Viv's, all for FightBeat (or FightWorld.us back then). A publicist would've submitted it to every writer/site on the planet.

To me, that's the difference. Though I won't argue with anyone who says that most writers are glorified publicists anyway.

The stuff Yanofsky sends out, by the way, are press releases. As far as I know, he's up to par when it comes to ethical issues. I have him host a radio show on my site, and when he and the co-host were tabbed to interview Jonathan Reid, he didn't do it due to their managerial ties.

Do you get paid to do your work, or is your employer using you the same way Stinger is being used?

Some things are implied Arben. Who writes the fucking book that says that journalists have to present a certain way, or that somoene can't be biased when doing a piece?

You remind me of the idiots who criticize Joe Reine because when he writes something he does not follow a Who, What, Where, When format.

Just because something is impled does not mean it is not stated. If I come over and fix your pipes it is implied that contractually you will pay me as your plumber, we don't write a contract up necessarily.

When Stinger took the tone he did, when he went through theatrics to present his point it was implied that he was not interested in being objective... and why should he be? Any viewer with a reasonable intellect can see that Stinger likes Chris Henry and that is why he is writing the piece! There is nothing unethical about that! I taught journalistic ethics for chrissakes.

There is room for more than one type of interview. As long as people have a way of distinguishing, and no claims are made under false pretenses it is creative to do things a different way. Reine writes press releases where he creates fantastic scenerios... they are creative and entertaining, nobody walks away saying "Is James Toney really the virtuosa that meets Hip Hop?"

Metamuse... journalism should not use conventions to reduce itself to stale formal discourse, especially on the net which can take advantage of themany different kinds of medium tha tmake things entertaining.

Wow, that was an inspired introduction Karl. You will always have the option of being a manager for the WWE if your first choice of employment turns sour.

    Good stuff and good interview.

That's cool that he's like that now. But I do remember his distributing a Q&A on Bobby Gunn before the Maccaranelli fight. It appeared on FightBeat and that FightNews wannabe site that models its homepage after MySpace, and had his name in the by-line.
