Yup, I knew it! Proof why Pavlik-Tito aint gonna happen. From boxingscene: As expected, the idea to stage a battle between WBC/WBO Kelly Pavlik and former three-division champion Felix "Tito" Trinidad, is in jeopardy of being marked off due to a disagreement on the weight. Promoters Bob Arum and Don King have recently held talks with respect to a possible Pavlik-Trinidad showdown for June 7 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Felix Trinidad Sr., father and manager of Tito, said that he will not allow or advise his son to move down to 160-pounds for a fight with Pavlik. He tells El Nuevo Dia that Pavlik can easily fight at a catch-weight above 160, as shown by his rematch with Jermain Taylor. He says that his son would have a hard time getting down to 160-pounds. Tito's last fight in January, against Roy Jones Jr., was a catch-weight of 170-pounds and Trinidad stuggled to meet the contracted weigh-limit. "They have mentioned his name to us, but I am more than sure that the 160-pound division is going to be a thing of the past for Tito. I would not advise Tito to do that (move down to 160)," Trinidad Sr. said. "If he wants to fight Tito, it would have to be at another weight." Promoter Bob Arum, recently told Primera Hora that in order to make the fight, Trinidad would have to agree to the weight-limit of 160-pounds. He says the fight with Taylor at 166-pounds was a one-shot deal per the stipulations of Taylor's rematch clause from the first Pavlik fight. Pavlik is moving back down to defend his titles and aims unify the middleweight division. If a deal can not be made for Trinidad, Arum would match Pavlik against undefeated middleweight "Irish" John Duddy. Like I said... its gonna be Pavlik-Duddy.
The idea that Tito can't make 160 is fucking absurd. He looked pudgy against Roy, and even when he first went to 160 years ago, he looked soft. Eat a fair bit less for 2 weeks, and Tito would lose that 10 pounds no problem. He must be a right greedy bastard these days.
i still like Tito's power...especially the lower the weight..pavlik is a plodder himself and i like the way tito still puts his punches together..as long as the opponent is there to be hit holy shit..tito in a HUGE upset
These old timers are also providing nice paydays for the young champions. Both sides benefit from this.
funny thing is that Duddy is not Pavlik's mandatory so let's not pretend he deserves the shot at pavlik. Arum wants that fight because of Duddy's popularity in NY. Who the fught has Duddy beaten to even be a real contender at 160? Didn't he fight Campas not to long ago? So if it's simply a money fight to make a huge event in NY he might as well fight Tito.opcorn:
Pavlik can't fight that weight either? Tito pushes 200 these days and not getting younger, much harder to get to 160 than before I would think.
If Tito can't make 160 then he should stop fighting right now! I didn't know Tito was struggling to make 170. This is a very bad sign. Tito's frame can't take more than 160. Thanks for posting this X.
I always felt Tito had a very good chance against Pavlik but not above 160. Tito did very good against RJ, but it was clear his frame can't handle anything above 160.
And after Tito gets KOed by Pavlik, the same folks who predicted that Tito would win by KO will be saying that Tito is "shot".
pavlik's only up-side to winning this fight is if he manages to do it with a single punch - a one punch ko. my guess is, by round 4, ,tito will be in the same mode he was in against Wright. the only difference is, Pavlik will go for the kill. one more thing: if tito fights pavlik inside, he will have more sucess than most expect. anyone notice taylor's utter refusal to fight pavlik inside. i don't think taylor knows how to fight inside. that's pretty weak for a world class ex-champion.
:: still, if ever a fighter can "earn" a gimme fight, pavlik has: Miranda, Taylor x2. it might be time to remind everyone what pavliklooks against contenders 10-5. impressive as hell is my guess. i'm hoping for an eventual pavlik/calzaghe fight. pavlik has a lot of the attributes of kessler that made him a threat, but he's better inside, and more fluid and also a better body puncher and counter puncher. i give him a real shot at beating sloppy joe if hopkins doesn't do it first.
Even Though it Looks like it WON'T B Happening, REED NEVER Had a Problem w/a Pavlik-Tito Matchup... N Fact, it's the PERFECT Type of Matchup to Help BUILD Pavlik's Notoriety...Tito-Roy did Very Good PPV Business & OK Business @ MSG... A Fight w/Tito @ MSG on Rican Weekend would B HUGE...& it would OUTSELL Tito-Roy N REED's Opinion... & for those of U Complaining about the Old Guard "Ruining" Fights, Boxing has ALWAYS Been this Way...Marciano Fought Joe Louis WELL AFTER Louis' Shelf Life...Ditto for Ali-Holmes, Holmes-Tyson, Tyson-Lennox, Tszyu-Chavez, the List Go's On & On... The Newer Fighters NEED those Old School "Names" on their Resume & Let's B Honest, Pavlik's ONLY 25 or So...1 Fight ISN'T Setting his Career Back or PREVENTING More Meaningful Bouts from Happening... REED
No Doubt, Pavlik DESERVES a "Gimme" N his Next Fight.... The Zertuche Fight, PRIOR to Miranda, WASN'T a "Gimme" Either... REED
Damn REED imagine if Tito somehow beats Pavlik. Roy would be the GOAT instantly without even fighting... ::
Absolutely right. Incredibly, there are folks here who not only want to see the fight but also think Tito might WIN. WTF???
i was a huge tito faan. and even now his skills are impressive. but anyone not in denial knows that his tape was corrupt. and ever sinve hopkins exposed it, he's not the same fighter - not by a long shot. and it's tragic to see guys like reid and vargas, and to a lesser extent joppy who were never the same after fighting tito-tapedg;oves. it s aggravated assault. and it derailed at leasr 2 promising crareers, not to mention thiam and what e could've become, or even oba carr. oba carr was never the same after tito assualted him.
That's it- I'm now convinced that Double L is mortal drunk. That second paragraph didn't even NEARLY make sense...::
