Nah, for those purposes I'll show them the Jeremy Irons 'Lolita', 'Ghost World', or if they like action, 'Leon: The Professional'.:Bad:

I personally don't think Poltergeist has aged well. It was creepy to watch as a child, but it's pretty shitty and comical now.

The Thing... now THAT'S a movie that will always remain great, and is arguably a top 5 movie of the 80s.

You know what is funny? I liked 'Poltergeist' more than The Thing in the 80's even though I didn't found Poltergeist scary at all (except for the clown doll scene) and I thought at that time that 'The Thing' was too gross & extremely gory for my taste. Now Poltergeist looks like a made-for-tv movie and The Thing remains an awesome film and not as gory in comparison to today's fare of horror films.

The Thing is a great film. Still creepy and most of the practical effects stack up still.

Also features the star and director of my favorite movie Big Trouble in Little China.
