    THIS MEANS WAR!!!

In a historic milestone the faith-based drama War Room took the top spot at the North American box office during the long but slow Labor Day weekend with $12.6 million. It is the first time a 100% independently funded & produced Christian film takes the #1 spot and more impressive doing it on its second week on a holiday weekend. Again I want to point out that the numbers for this film could have been bigger if Sony, through its Affirm Films subsidiary branch, would had have a little more faith and had the film released in more screens. Anyway the micro-budgeted film dropped only 18% of its attendance and has made so far $27.9 million in 11 days. Not a spectacular number, but incredibly profitable one for the $3 million crowd pleaser production.

Straight Otta Compton ended its three weeks reign at the top spot and moved to the second spot with $9.7 million. The Universal Picture hit biopic has now grossed an impressive $150.2 million domestically plus $18.1 million more on the international market, where it hasn’t been as successful as in here, for a worldwide total of $168.3 million.

Debuting in the third spot the old timers drama A Walk In The Woods starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte beat all predictions and bested the other new release Transported Refueled with $10.5 million. The indie drama benefitted from the aforementioned film seeing its numbers dropping faster than a car falling off a cliff. That action film suffered from not having Jason Statham as its lead plus critics weren’t particularly nice with this reboot. It landed in the fifth spot with a disappointing $9 million. The film had a $22 million budget, but still this is the worst opening in the franchise.

Mission Improbable: Rush Station took the 4th spot with $9.3 million. The Tom Cruise fifth M.I. film has now grossed $183.5 million domestically in its sixth week. While the film has already crossed the $500 million mark worldwide ($511.2 million to be precise), it will have a hard time matching the $694.7 million of M.I.: Ghost Protocol.

The other new release of the week, the Mexican animated film Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos (literally translated ‘One Rooster with Many Eggs’ that can also be double entendre as 'A Rooster with lots of Cojones') landed in the 9th spot with $4.4 million in only 395 screens. That makes that Spanish language foreign animated film more successful than the critically acclaimed Shaun of the Sheep which debuted in the 11th spot with $4 million on 2,320 screens a few weeks ago. I am sure that Donald Trump is not amused by this.
