Isn't it amazing how Rua manages to be in shape for the fights he wins but is always hurt/fat/ poorly conditioned every time he loses or looks bad? Watching him last night I think he needs knee, ankle, hip and shoulder reconstruction. He couldn't do anything, even momentarily, against Jones. Even if I hated a fighter I would give him credit for walking right through the best guy in the division and one of the P4P elites.
Answer: The same exact Brazilian that was choked out by Griffin, looked terrible against Coleman and beat Liddell and Machida. Same guy just a far different opponent.
Trpl, that's not entirely true. Rua looked like shit against Coleman, a fight he won. He didn't look great against Lidell either, despite a KO 1 win. Before the Griffin fight, Valdosta told me he might lose because of preparation/injuries etc. So because of injuries/training habits/whatever, Rua is a fighter who has looked dramatically different fight to fight in recent years. Again I'm not saying a Rua at the top of his game beats Jones (seems unlikely now), but the Rua that turned up yesterday was a slow, lethargic piece of crap. It's not taking anything away from a crazy good performance from Jones, but that's just how it is. I said before the fight that Jones is a proper elite fighter if he beats Rua and I stick by it mainly because of the manner of victory.
I don't disagree with much of what you're saying. But I contend that is the exact same Rua that beat Machida simply because Machida's pace never pushed Shogun. Basically I'm saying Rua has been less than what he was ever since the first knee injury and entering the UFC.
It had nothing to with a so called pace. He was taken down twice by Machida and got up and looked great. It had been over 2 and half years since his last surgery and he had finally looked good. This Shogun gassed after a single takedown. He just re-injured his knee again after all that time. It happens. Jones got a good win. But it is whatever.
Come on dude. Take downs or not, Machida fights at a snails pace. There is nothing about Machida that would tire anyone out. Getting manhandled by Jones would tire out a Kenyan track star. He's had better than 8 months to get in shape.
Every time Shogun loses he is injured, had a bad camp, ate bad shellfish, whatever. Then he KO's Chuck Liddell and Machida and he's "The old Shogun" Bwahahahaha! Biggest fucking crock of shit ever!!! He got whooped..Period.
Me too Jarhead. You can only use the same old excuses so many times though. Shogun obviously thought he was in shape and ready to fight, or he wouldn't have taken the fight. I don't see Shogun making excuses so his fans shouldn't either. He straight up say "Jones was better than me" and that is the damn truth!
Thanks Z.. Missed that the first, second and 50th time I watched the fight. Good catch. And GF is right, that is sad. He was destroyed mentally and physically.
Which tells you how prepared Shogun was for that fight. That was a shell of Shogun in the cage that night. Period.
He is 9 months and then 26 months post knee surgeries. But here is the key thing: So basically the guy had 5 months training at full speed to get ready for Jones according to his OWN words. Again, don't blame the knee. Don't blame training. Blame the Jon Jones ass whooping machine.
If Shogun thought he wasn't ready to fight, he wouldn't have fought, and he made NO excuses after the fight.
Shogun went into the Griffin fight on a bum knee and didn't make any excuses then either, that's just the type of guy he is. Doesn't make it any less bullshit when he says his healthy. Also, I question whether spending time with his wife and newborn baby affected his re-hab. Probably a minor detail though.
