He had trouble getting close enough. It's hard to just clinch throw a big guy like that. Gustaffson isn't Shogun.
Jones DIDN'T Try to Take Gustaffson Down UNTIL Gustaffson Took him Down 1st...Competitive ARROGANCE...The Building ERUPTED when he Took Jones Down... By Then, Gustaffson had Built Up Some Confidence...From There, Jones Made CONCERTED Efforts to Take him Down, But they were Both VERY Sweaty & Slippery...Gustaffson's FOOTWORK & SPRAWL Led to him Stuffing the Majority of Bones' Takedown Attempts... REED Read that Jones was Something like 1-12 on Takedown Attempts...Gustaffson was 1-8... REED
Maybe I'm in the minority but I was seriously impressed by Jones. With all the lead up talk about Gustaffson's hunger and amazing cardio, it was Jones that finished stronger in the 5th. It was Jones that wanted the belt more in that last 5 minutes. And I thought the fight was even going into the last round. It truly was a "Championship" round. At the end of the day it was a win for the fans. They got to see a tremendous fight with multiple momentum changes and great exchanges. Lastly, Gustaffson has a serious chin. Those head kicks he took in the final round probably end the night of many 205ers.
Just read that Jones hurt his foot in the first round. The way he limped (almost got carried) out of the cage afterwards, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a serious injury. I like Texeira-Gustaffson in an eliminator next anyway. Let Glover prove he deserves a shot more than Alexander deserves the rematch.
Don't get me wrong I'm surprised too. I expected him to beat Gustaffson easily, Gustaffson is obviously better than we thought, and Jones worse when facing a guy more or less his own size. All I'm saying is no one should be surprised Jones was outboxed. His standup has always looked awkward, and kind of slow. People kept saying he has great standup, and I completely disagreed. He is an amazing fighter, but it's down to his sheer length, ground game, fighting spirit and ringsmarts.
Maybe Glover is one of those steady, solid guys, but he doesn't impress me at all. Surely the big Swede would bash him.
No Doubt... w/Jones' Customary Level of DOMINANCE, There's ALWAYS a Question in the Minds of Fans...Is he a FRONTRUNNER???...Can he Overcome ADVERSITY???...What Happens when Someone Hits him BACK???...Can he DIG Deeeeeeeeeep in the "Championship" Rounds???... Round 1 vs. Machida & Belfort Provided SNIPPETS, but Last Night we Got a 5 Round Example of Jones' GRIT & DETERMINATION...Going Into Round 4, REED had Gustaffson AHEAD...To Make Matters Worse, Gustaffson was in the Process of WINNING Round 4 as Well...Then Jones Said Enough is ENOUGH, Seized Round 4 & the Fight Itself... We KNEW Bones Jones had Style...Last Night, we Learned he Also Possesses SUBSTANCE...Whomever it Is that Eventually Beats Jones, is Gonna have to Go Through HELL in the Process...They're Going to Have to WANT it More... Great fight. Great effort by both. Gustaf lost the fight by in those last 45 seconds of round 4. Otherwise he wins it 3-2. Both showed great heart. Would love to see them do it again.
I hadn't even looked at the undercard, but I was very pleased to see Barao and the undefeated Russian on the card. Both of them are superb fighters. Barao is a p4p-type guy, imo. I see his skillset as very similar to Aldo's. Jones' performance wasn't about him being misrated. Perhaps some of it was due to the injury, but I think it is very much due to people underrating Gustaffson. The fucking odds were 7-1. I'd probably be out money had I known that ahead of the telecast. Jones' standup is superb. It might not be his strongest attribute, but offensively he is extremely dynamic. Defensively, he's solid, but not exceptional. But, that is the same on the ground and on the feet. Imo, he's p4p#1 and like everyone else, he's beatable.
Good fight. I had Jones winning every round but the third. It was obvious Gus was the superior boxer while Jones was the superior martial artist dominating in kicks and elbow strikes. They were both even in take down and take down defense. What I thought separated them was Jones superior accuracy, timing, and placement of shots as well as better cardio. I thought Jones let Gus off the hook at the end of the fourth and basically shoved Gus to the ground mainly because Gus was so winded. Both guys were spent by the 5th.
Not sure how anyone could not give Gus the 1st round tbh, he won it clear as day. Jones landed a couple of leg kicks and an eye poke. Gus controlled the round, landed more shots, took Jones down, and cut him with a punch.
Replay clearly showed it was a punch that missed, but the edge of the glove caught and sliced his face.
i never thought jones was a good 'boxer', but he's still very good at controlling the distance and scoring points with kicks and elbows. he's just not very good at throwing punches and i thought gus was outboxing him at times. going to be intersting to see if texiera will be able to close the gap and land some punches. if jones' can't take him down, then i see another tough night for jones. either way, i thought jones proved that he's a true champ. he faced adversity for the first time and was able to suck it and did whatever he needed to do to win those last two rounds.
The size was important for Gustaffson but his footwork had more to do with his ability to reach Jones. Glover doesn't have the range or footwork. He is almost a "plodder". I think Jones would pick him apart standing.
gustaffson also fought w/ that herky jerk motion and was able to sneak in some punches. i think jones had difficulty with his movement and timing. but yea, i agree that glover is a bit of a plodder. to me, he's kinda like a smaller version of jds.
To add even more color to this fight, I just read where Jon Jones and referee John McCarthy had to plead with the Doctor between rounds 4 and 5 not to stop the fight due to the cut over the eye of Jones. I didn't catch that exchange during the broadcast, and the cut didn't seem that bad to me.
Gus did take him down, he just didn't do anything with it. He also landed more punches, and equal kicks. I thought the fight was VERY close, closer than you guys think. Excellent fight though, and Jones proved he's a true fighter. I look forward to a rematch, or either of them beating up "Glover".
i thought gus won rounds 1 and 3, and looked to be winning the 4th until jones landed that elbow and followed up w/ kicks and knees. jones definitely won the 5th. it was a close fight for sure.
Agree. I thought there were only two clear rounds--4 for Jones and 3 for Gus (? the one where Jones got cut). The other rounds could have gone either way. Gus might be the 2nd best lh, but he's easier to beat than Jones because he doesn't hit as hard. I think most, including Jones, underrated Gus because of the Davis fight. Letting one fight override everything else a guy has done is usually naive when it comes to mma.
This is EXACTLY how REED Saw It... Gustaffson Didn't DOMINATE or Anything, but he Still Won Round 1 Pretty CLEAR...He'd ALREADY Peppered Bones w/a Few Shots, CUT Him, THEN Took him Down...Jones, Being WHO he Is, Responded w/a Pretty CLEAR Round 2... Round 3, is when Gustaffson SIGNALED to Jones (AND the Wooooorld) he was there to WIN...Round 4 was on the Brink of Being a DESPERATION Round for Jones...He Evened USED the Word "Desperation" when Discussing the Fight Afterwards...It Might've Been an UPPERCUT that Seemed to @ Least BUZZ Jones as Bad as we'd Ever Seen...Dude RETREATED & Everything...Right Side of his Face a MASK of Blood...Even REED Actually PONDERED the Idea of Bones Jones LOSING a Fight, Right Then & There... THEN Came the Elbow, Jones' SIGNATURE Move, @ a Time when he Absolutely NEEDED it...From the Moment it Landed, the Fight was ALL His... 3-2 Bout, Undoubtedly... REED
