Werdum didn't have confidence in his striking in the 2nd fight with Overeem. He subbed Overeem in the first fight, and he thought that was the only way he'd win the rematch. Overeem was considered to be the best striker in MMA at the time. Werdum has improved a lot since then. He's a different fighter now in terms of his standup skills.
I would agree except that just 6 months after the Overeem fight, Werdum fought a big puncher in Roy Nelson and chose to stand. And after beating Fedor, you would think Werdum's confidence would have been sky high. It's just weird.
Nelson, Hunt, Brown all desroyed by Werdum. The man is dangerous. I am picking him to win. Werdum will be unable to get the take down on Cain. Cain will want to keep it standing. And i think Werdum beats him standing up.
Overeem had just won the K1 Grand Prix. He was 265 and ripped (on steroids) and considered to be the best kickboxer in the world. Roy Nelson is dangerous, but he wasn't as intimidating as Overeem at the time. I'd pick Werdum by knockout if he fights Overeem a third time. He seems like a whole new fighter. Overeem hasn't been the same since he had to get off testosterone.
I hope this happens. This would set up an epic Werdum / JDS rematch for the title. If Cain wins, I don't know who's next. I don't want to see Cain / JDS 4.
I really think the HW division is garbage outside of Cain and JDS. I hope you're right so We get a good fight.
Even Dos Santos doesn't want to see Cain\JDS 4. I think Cain ruined JDS. He'll never be the same fighter. TFK
I see that too. I'd love to see JDS as champion again. That was one of the best moments in sports history for me when he beat Cain for the title. Seeing him lose to Cain twice were two of the worst nights in sports history for me. This is what makes combat sports better than team sports like football or basketball. Fighting is personal and meaningful. This is the purest form of sport. The better man that night is victorious, usually.
Problem is that JDS will never beat Cain again IMO. Even tho that third fight was brutal for both guys.
Joe Rogan always hypes up the fighters on the PPV. He was right this time. Rosa came back and won the last round, but it was close.
I'm so nervous I can't even sit down right now. Something great or something really bad is about to happen.
Nate the Great was a great fighter. He was the best middleweight in the world other than Anderson Silva. At one point.
That was good corner work by Trevor Wittman. How many trainers would have tried to motivate their fighter to get back out there?
It's hard when you realize one of your favorite fighters needs to retire. I don't want to see him go out on 3 knockout losses like Chuck Liddell.
