You're tripping. Cerrone was highly regarded, and well established, when Diaz mugged him

I guess you weren't a WEC fan. Cerrone established himself as a top fighter before his first UFC fight.

Nope. I think I was just getting into MMA around that time he came to UFC and I liked him immediately.

I've been watching him all along. I've been a fan since the first Henderson fight. Cowboy has dominated so many great fighters. He's only lost to a few top guys.

I've been a Nate Diaz since he won the Ultimate Fighter. :) I've been a fan of Nick Diaz since he knocked out Robbie Lawler. Tonight was a rare night in combat sports, a night where the younger brother lived up to the expectations of his older brother.

McGregor shot his load in the first round. When Diaz started to get to him in the 2nd, McGregor basically gave up taking it to the ground.

Dos Anjos wouldve messed Conor up very badly.

Cowboy never dominated any great fighters. He dominates averag to good fighters, but he almost always lay an egg when he faces elite fighters.

Cowboy has fought everyone who wanted to fight him. He lost to Henderson and RDA, both UFC lightweight champions.

He also lost to Nate Diaz. Nate is one of the top few guys at lightweight. Nate is a great fighter and martial artist. Nate is a great fighter even if he never wins the belt.

This I don't disagree with (though you forgot to metion that he also crumbled miserably against PEttis) . I disagreed with your statement that "COwboy dominated so many great fighters". He hasn't. The only potentially great fighter he beat was Henderson, and that was a robbery. Cerrone is a weird fighter. He looks excellent against B level fighter, but he can't do anything with the A- and upward.

Pettis is another guy I'd call elite at lightweight. He has the same vulnerability as Nate where a strong wrestler can hold him for a few rounds and win by decision. Pettis vs McGregor would have been fun, or Pettis vs Diaz.

Although I disagree Henderson was robbed against Cerrone, (could have gone either way IMO) I do agree with you that Cerrone can't beat the big boys. Hell, Diaz made him look like a complete amateur when Cerrone couldn't figure out a plan for something as simple as a guy punching him in the face. Cerrone is a good but limited fighter and he doesn't have the toughness and durability to reign as a champion in a strong division. He's fun to watch though.

McGregor lit him up the first round and a half. Crazy fight though. You just can't predict this sport.

My main point was that the lightweight division has lots of top fighters. It's probably the deepest division in the UFC. Conor ran through most of the top guys at featherweight, but the lightweight division is different.

This is a glorious night for Nate Diaz. No matter how you look at it. No matter what happens in every fight from now on, Nate will always have this moment of glory. He deserves it.

I didn't call it, exactly, but I thought this could happen. I didn't think the fight would go to the ground unless Nate hurt him first with his boxing.

McGregor still looked like the better fighter imo. The way Nate pulled the sub off was brilliant though, it was lightning quick transitioning.

McGregor looked like the better boxer for the first round and a half. He busted up Nate's face pretty bad. People who predicted a Conor victory in the first round, they don't know Nate.

This fight was an example of why they have weight classes in MMA.

the way Nate reversed positions was cool. His boxing is overrated but he's obviously a high level bjj operator.

He was defeated by a better grappler. Nate got that choke, and Conor had the choice of tapping out or losing consciousness like Holly Holm. The fight was over either way. There's no shame in tapping out in MMA in this situation.

I was more referring to the fact he was exhausted and Diaz was starting to bust him up. He took it to the ground where he had zero chance of winning the fight and then tapped. He gave up the second he took it to the canvas.

I like and dislike McGregor, he's a brave, diligent and hard-working fighter but he just talks too much for me.

Same for me. I admire his willingness to take on top notch opposition and to challenge himself, but I find his out-of-the-ring antics very cliche and annoying.

It's totally unnecessary and very uncool. Doesn't anyone want to be the strong silent type anymore, like Gary Cooper in High Noon.............remember Clint Eastwoods character just could dominate the scene with the sound of his boots on a wooden floor alone.

Less is more, for me. Nice and quiet.

    Fraud.

He's been banging on for weeks that he'd never tap out, that warriors don't tap out, and that you'd need to carry him out on a stretcher.

He lasted about 3 seconds with that hold properly locked in.

(tbf he seemed to have completely underestimated the jump in weight and his power just didn't carry up to 170)

He believed his own hype. Blew his load in Rd 1, panicked, got smashed and panicked some more.

'Quitting' in MMA as opposed to in boxing are very different
In MMA, you kind of know if you're arm's going to be broken or you're losing consciousness - you tap-out (or you don't, lol).
In boxing, a fighter doesn't really know the the cumulative effect of damage being caused by the amount of blows he's taking.

That's why MMA's the safer sport of the two, even though it looks bad.
