It's not just the Mackison fight but there's been a few fights that made me question how good Ortiz really is. I'm just not convinced he's as good as they(people promoting him)say he is. I would favor Bud and Spence for sure. Boots hasnt beaten anyone on the level of Ortiz so I cant say he would knock Ortiz out but lets just say I would not bet against Boots in that fight.
agREED... Got Some Rounds In, Knocked Off Some Rust from Basically a YEAR Loooooooong Layoff, Had to Pursue and Breakdown a Tough, Crafty, Undefeated Opponent, Yet STILL Came Away w/the KO... REED Would Rate Verg's Performance a B+/A- and Thinks He's a LIVE Dog vs. Bud, Spence OR Boots...Ortiz ISN'T a Cakewalk for Any of Them and it Wouldn't Be an Upset of Epic Proportions if he Came Out Victorious... Whomever it Is That Eventually BEATS Vergil Ortiz Will Most Certainly FEEL Him 1st... REED
exactly how so. For as aggressive as he is offensively,..to me he looks decent defensively. Keeps a high guard and chin down. Is he Sweet Pea? Of course not. But after seeing him half a dozen times,..he doesn’t look bad defensively
Ortiz has a horrible habit of setting extremely predictable rhythms with his jab. He doesn't move his head much, and generally does everything in an efficient way, which lets him naturally flow from position to position while on the offensive, however, he's a classic case of a guy who's too methodical when it comes to his technique and style. Kava almost knocked him out for it, by timing his jab. A guy like Crawford would do far more than exploit his jab.
agREED… Ortiz Definitely Sacrifices Defense for OFFENSE, But it’s Not Like He’s a Sponge ala, Mayorga/Maidana… High Guard/Chin Down, as You Noted, Head/Upper Body Movement…Is Ortiz a GREAT Defensive Fighter? Of Course Not, But He’s a RESPONSIBLE Defensive Fighter…It’s Not as if Dude Completely DISREGARDS It… REED
I never see any head movement in Ortiz. Maidana and Mayorga are extreme examples. Those two were never hyped to be the possible future of boxing. I just don't see Vergil as a talent on the level of an Ennis or Shakur. I don't see him as a Benavidez level talent either, not when David has his head on straight, at least.
He Moved His Head vs McKinson, He Wasn’t Simply PARRYING Shots, Exclusively… He’s Not a Tyson/Frazier Bob ‘N Weave Machine, But Head Movement IS There… Ryan Garcia Doesn’t Move his Head…Ortiz is Canelo in Regards to Head/Upper Body Movement, By Comparison… REED
Vergil is a helluva lot better than Ryan. That's not the bar I'm measuring him by. I'm asking myself if he'll be a very good fighter, or a dominant champion. I'm thinking it's the former. I'm not seeing a guy quite good enough to be a dominant champion.
REED Doesn't See a GLARING Weakness in Vergil Ortiz; Jack of MOST Trades, Master of None Type of Fighter... Enough Handspeed, Power, Accuracy and Punch Variety to Catch ANY Elite Fighter Slipping, and a Good Finisher On Top of That...He's Going to Be a PROBLEM for Bud, Boots or Spence, Even if he Loses... REED Could See Vergil Becoming a Dominant Champion EVENTUALLY...He May Take an L in his 1st Title Fight or So, But REED Thinks He'll Be Better For It...Time Will Tell... REED
One of the strengths of Vergil is that it is very durable. He doesn't seem to feel tired. On the contrary, we have the impression that he increases in power and energy throughout the fight.
The welterweight bout between Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Eimantas Stanionis is slated to take place on March 18 in Texas, sources told ESPN. Golden Boy will promote what shapes up as a 50-50 slugfest on DAZN. Goood matchup
