Outside of a unification with Chagaev, there's not much...Haye, Povetkin and Dimitrenko are all in line to fight Wladimir....so maybe if Arreola beats McCline, they can make that fight at Staples or something and at least attempt to get some interest stateside.

Vitali-Maskaev is a decrepit match-up. There should be an over/under on how many times it'll be postponed.

Haye KOs the living shit out the Vitali that showed up against Gomez. That was the worst HW fight I have seen in years. How pathetic this division is. Watching the grass grow in my backyard is more exciting.

The fight I want to see in light of most of the comments coming from ankle-biting midget groupies all over the internet is Pacquioa - Vitali ,.. so we can see how sensational flashy speed and agility does against the 'sloppy' strength and force of a heavyweight.

While not disagreeing with general sentiment, W. Klit - Ibragimov was a lot more painful IMO, as indeed was W. Klit - Rahman - vitali vs. gomez was more on the level of the latter

Agreed. In recent years most heavyweight title fights have looked crappy. This was better than any fight that included Oquendo, Ruiz or Briggs, not to mention the all-time worst fight between Byrd and Williamson. This does not mean that the fight had been good (it wasn't) it is to say that it was near the heap in the pile of shit.

Thanks for reminder. Even in 2009, Toney-Oquendo was infininitely worse than last night's fare. I was away on business for a few days recently, and felt so starved of boxing, that I ended up sitting through Toney-Oquendo twice on eurosport just to get some boxing fix.

I would add that for a few years since the night of the young heavyweights (featured gomez, guinn, mesi), there has been some question about whether gomez's skills would compensate for his lack of size and laziness, particularly after beating Virchis. At least last night answers that question definitively, another step towards separating wheat from chaff.

Another impressive win from a semi-retired Vitali. Beat Gomez like a red headed step child who looked like he had no business being their after round 1.

I'm still just upset that Vitali retired two years ago. For once we could of had a legitimate, world recognized HW Champ. But retired and left the division in more shambles then it is today.

If this was a decent division Vitali would be making perogis in one of LOk's restaurants. Next to Hanwrap margarito's place.

I thought Yanqui Diaz was pretty thorough. Perhaps you mean in a prolonged manner?

I thought Vitaly looked good, better than usual in fact, and while it wasn't a good fight, it wasn't flat otu boring either and was league above is last fight vs Peter or pretty much every Wlad where he isn't put on his ass.

Of course JC Gomez didn't deseved a #1 contender spot as he didn't beat anyone of note but he's still a tricky fighter but who's main problem is lack of punch at hw ( I don't care that he floored Virchis, he can't punch ). Shamefull that Maskaev was put next in line by the WBC as he is throughfully undeserving, once again.

If you are referring to me again, there is none. Maskaev is no kind of contender and him being ranked #1 is a joke. The only acceptable reason for the fight IMO is if they strip him otherwise as their goal is to get all the title belts. Otherwise that fight means nothing.

I'm not just referring to you, even though you do always seem to try to view Wlad and/or Vitali's opposition in the most positive manner possible.

There will definitely be folks who will find a way to be impressed when Vitali blows away the washed up Maskaev.

Kellerman said something like Rahman was still a top ten fighter on his best night...so if you've got a problem with people inflating the Klitschko's competition, start with him.

the whole division would be making perogies if there were a few decent heavies... I mean christ almighty.... Rahman? Maskev? Its like going through a shit stained junkyard and finding a tuna can and thinking it is gods gift to the universe because everything else is rusty and shitstained... I have never seen a division this in need.

You know what? If Haye has have a decent punch he has a chance. I mean just at least give me a guy with a punch! I am an old time fan of the heavyweights it is 75% of the reaon I follow the sport and I am officially sick of this shithole of a division.

Yeah fuck the belts. I´m all for the great match-ups the mandatories and belts prevent like uh..hmmmm...well...yes...exactly.:doh:

Just the disdain with which he talks about Povetkin mere 16 pro fights shows the author knows little about the sport.

Admittedly I am both a Vitali fan and a JC Gomez fan, but since ESPN dicked this fight around their schedule I missed it and finally watched it yesterday and...

You guys criticizing the fight and Gomez, in particular, are nitwits.

Gomez tried and was skilled enough to hit Vitali. Vitali showed great grit, ability to land, and ability to throw a lot of punches without getting tired. Obviously, he isn't as fluid as Wlad.

I really think that this Gomez could have and would have given Wlad a ton of problems. Wlad cannot throw punches like Vitali and it was volume that finally wore Gomez down, not power. Gomez took some big shots and kept landing. Brewster did far less, purrity did far less.

Gomez was and probably still is a top 5 heavy going into this fight and leaving it. And maybe #3.
