"...a couple of grazing blows ruffled the Cuban's curly locks, one possibly with a sliver of force, and Solis went south without further encouragement." ::::::
I watched the replay about 50 times, and Solis was brutally knocked out by a grazing punch. :: Shit, look at his eyes after the punch lands. And look at his face while he's holding his knees on the canvas. Dude was OUT.
The punch reminded me of one of Vitali's KD shots against Danny Williams: there too it looked as if Vitali merely lift his arm up as Williams rushed in. While in some fights Vitali lands plenty of clean arm-shots and the opponent doesn't go anywhere. Go figure. The point still stands though: Solis seems to have an Audley Harrison level of a chin
Oner was always shady. Now he has to retire. He said he would retire if Solis did not win. Solis did not win. Oner, grab your apron and skillet.

Naw his left knee got fucked up. He didn't quit cause he was getting beaten. I actually thought the round was pretty close and could have gone either way prior to the stoppage/injury. I'll Holla 5000
Weird thing though that he grabbed his right knee while he was down. Perhaps he felt that something was broke in the knee but the pain had not hit yet so he grabbed the wrong one.
If watch from 3:35 onwards, its not even clear that the right counter hands - it looks like Solis takes it on the glove. Real fucking shame, that fight was shaping up to be interesting. we might never see Vitali in another interesting fight.
True. But from other angles you can see where it lands. Agreed that it looked interesting. I was enjoying it.
Made my friend think of Ali/Liston II. I'm personally uncomfortable with the comparison, but I see what he means. I'd love to see Klitschko/Solis quality replays to get a better idea of what really happened on that day.
Looked to me like the punch landed on the temple, shook him up real bad, causing him to fall kind of awkwardly. The awkward fall led to the knee damage. The round was close, but the knockdown would have given Klit a 10-8 round either way.
I think people are getting a bit overexcited about how well Solis did in that opening round. He landed two nice counter right hands and a left hook, but Vitali was basically walking him down, showing him little respect, and the round was very even. Without the knockdown, it was probably a 10-10 round. And like I said in another thread, you can't just say "Oh Solis got injured, tough luck", it was a punch that fucking injured him, he clearly isn't very tough. Put it this way Hut and others that thought it was an intriguing fight, who would you pick in a rematch?
Even though it was interesting while it lasted, I think the fight was a forgone conclusion. All Solis does is keep a high guard waiting for counters. Against fighter with Vitalis reach and awkward style, Vitali would have just peppered through that guard all night without toonmuch worry of getting countered and eventually wear tubby down.
True that, plus the fact that Solis' counters were quickly thrown shots that carried little weight. Gomez had a more impressive first round against Vitali
'Intriguing' in the context of a Vitali fight is a guy who might take 3 or 4 rounds off him and shine a low powered torch on just where Vitali sits in a historical context. It looked to me like Solis had the ability to provide that kind of 'intrigue'. No more. It's questionable whether Solis will ever be the same and if he comes back at all it won't be for a rather long time so rematch talk is moot.
That will depend a lot on what sort of weight Solis balloons up to in the interim, and what happens this Summer viz Haye, the Klitschkos and Adamek.
Why are all these writers calling the fight a "Farce"? Solis came to fight, landed cleanly with a brace of chopping rights, showed infinitely better movement and desire than Sam Peter, then got clipped, fell awkwardly and hurt himself. Etienne vs Tyson was a farce. Norris vs Tyson was a farce. Norris vs Vitali was a farce. Hopkins vs Oscar was a farce. This as disappointing, but not a farce. Was this fight any more of a farce than Alexander vs Bradley? That fight ended when one man declared himself incapable of continuing.
I thought Solis was clearly losing the first round. Vitali was doing what he always does, throwing a lot of shots, walking his man down. Solis was doing virtually nothing. He landed 2 decent counter rights, and backed up the entire round.
What's sad is reading an unathletic fuck write something like this... What's the most athletic thing Rafael's ever done? Stand in line at a buffet?
I can understand why some fan watching at home or wherever would pop off and call it a farce. It's a little harder to understand why a writer would do so in an article (or anywhere where his name was attached). Shit happens in athletic competitions, whether it's in the first minute or the last. Was Cotto-Foreman a farce? Foreman hurt his leg and it wasn't even from a punch.
I can see where the disappointment comes from. If you read back through the articles, for instance those of the British press, the feeling was that Vitali, with only 1 stoppage in his last 3, was slipping, and that Solis had the youth, hunger and amateur background to do the job. For the first 2 minutes and 30 seconds that looked like it might be the case. Guys like Johnson got some jabs off, Briggs got a few very good digs to the ribs off, but Solis had showed movement, stepped in, showed fast hands, and landed cleanly. Then he gets clipped and blew his knee out. Disappointing yes, but never a farce.
