That's just it, there's NEVER Been a Standard Ring Size in the Sport of Boxing...EVER...But Leave it to Duran Fans to PATHETICALLY CLING to the Ring, in the Case of Leonard-Duran II... They've Taken the IDIOCY of Qwerty's Infamous "Joppy Lost Because of the Ring" Quote & Tried to LEGITIMIZE it... REED:limp:
Wasn't aware of that. In fact, considering how long Vitali spends on the backfoot, I would say he is more comfortable in a larger one.
Fair comment, he shouldn't have agreed to it in the first place. He was obviously feeling cocky and stupid. By the way, how many 24 foot rings have there been in big fights?
Thats a good question.....because if it turns out there have been like....one.....then that would say a lot. ::
I thought the ring was 21 feet. I recall Cosell saying something like "Ray Leonard is using every inch of this 21 foot ring."
That's just Howard sounding off. He liked to say "Ray" "Inches" and "Ring" all at the same time. I am surprised he used the word "21" though, that would be anathema to him.
If you are a natural lightweight and blow up to 200 lbs from drinking and overeating, you are going to struggle to lose 50+ lb in 2 months. Seems kind of obvious. Duran had leverage, but he wasn't a bitch/diva at the negotiating table like Leonard. That just wasn't him.
Absolutely right. The guy was just a pure fighter. He was probably just like "Yeah, whatever, let's just fucking fight", then got right back to stuffing his face, consuming large quantities of alcohol, singing, and teabagging beautiful Panamanian women with his enormous, sweaty, Latin testicles.
Standard ring sizes are 16x16' (very small, unusual) to 20x20' (on the large side but now adopted as de facto standard) afaik. 24x24' is enormous. I don't know of a single other instance where a 24x24' ring was used, except possibly Leonard-Hagler. Didn't he also demand 12 oz gloves for both the Duran & Hagler fights? Leonard was a faggot.
Key point. Leonard as an American would have been far more up to speed on that stuff- he had prior experience {but never any Pryor experience} and would have been well guided in those matters. Duran had a "Point the guy out" mentality which is admirable to an extent but folly at World Level, which is as much a "bidness" concern as it is a physical concern.
Yep, that's what I'm getting at, what other high profile fights have had a 24 foot ring? Has there even been 1? If Leonard thought he was the better fighter, why didn't he want to prove it in a normal ring like a normal, proper boxing match.
Let me see... Leonard behaves like a professional and takes care of himself and yet it's his fault because he didn't wait for the optimal time for Duran to get off his fat ass and properly prepare for the fight? Duran was what...71-1 at the time of the rematch? Leonard had maybe 25 pro fights by that time. Again...how is Leonard in the wrong here? 'Like I said before" Duran accepted all the terms. If Leonard wanted Duran painted blue and Duran accepted it's too damn bad. All Duran had to say is "no" or counteroffer. Sounds to me like guys are making excuses for Duran's unprofessional behavior. Ironically, none have stood up for Broner in the same manner.
Broner behaved unprofessionally in the process of weighing in and fighting. Duran did not cheat or behave unprofessionally in a way that affected his opponent negatively. Being unprofessional in the sense that you blow up between fights is hardly comparable to being unprofessional in the sense that you come in overweight on the scales because you didn't try to make weight.
With that said then Duran fans need to forever shut up making excuses for him. 1). He accepted the terms and fought 2). He made the weight at the appropriate time. The "leonard knew he had to lose 40-50 pounds" excuse has been finally put to bed.
More of this LAME, Superhero BULLSHIT from Duran Fans... So he was Sooooo Much of a Badsass, he COULDN'T B Bothered to Care about Trivial Matters like a Contract Negotiation, yet in the SAMEfuckingBREATH, you Idol Worshippers Complain like Bitch/Diva's BECAUSE of the Contract Negotiation???... This is PRECISELY why REED has a Problem w/Duran Fans...You Guys BURN the Fucking Candle from BOTH Ends... & When Poor Widdle Woberto Got his Feewings Hurt by the Mean Sugar Way & QUIT, You Guys APPLAUDED that as well... BULLSHIT... REED:boohoo:
There IS NO "Standard" Size for a Ring, Dude...SInce the Beginning of Time, there's Been "Phonebooth" Rings & LARGE 1's... The Onus is on YOU Guys to... A. PROVE the Ring for Leonard-Duran II was Indeed 24' B. PROVE that this was Part of the Contract Negotiations C. PROVE that this Size of a Ring is Unprecedented Anything LESS is More Unadulaterated BULLSHIT from THE Most Unbearable Faction of Fans on the Internet... REED:boohoo:
Even IF the Ring was 24' (Which has YET to Be PROVEN), Why Didn't the "Fighting Machine", the "Pure Fighter" Simply CUT THE FUCKING RING OFF???... REED:boohoo:
Even Worse, Some of the SAME Posters Making Excuses for Duran have Actually CHASTISED Broner, from the Escobedo Fight... Per Usual, Duran Fans Want it BOTH Ways... REED:boohoo:
The 24 foot ring in this match has been well known fact for decades... until this thread, I've not seen it disputed From the IBHOF website delaing with welterweight rivalries: Robert Duran W 15 Sugar Ray Leonard - "The Brawl in Montreal" was one of those few fights that transcended boxing. It was a welterweight version of Ali vs. Frazier. The matchup between Leonard, the welterweight champ and Olympic hero, and Duran, the savage lightweight king, captured the imagination of even the most casual sports fan. Leonard played the role of the smooth boxer while Duran carried the reputation as a devastating puncher. They clashed on June 20, 1980 before 46,317 fans at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Duran took control of the action early and drew Leonard into a slugfest. The fighter's often battled toe-to-toe, which clearly benefited the Panamanian challenger. When it ended, Duran won the title with a close (146-144, 145-144 and 148-147) unanimous decision. Leonard wouldn't make the same mistake again. When they met in a rematch later that year, Leonard's slick boxing ability and a comfortable 24-foot ring frustrated Duran into submission. The proud champion uttered the words "No Mas" in round eight The hugeness of the ring can be gleaned simply from watching the fight
Yep, everything I've ever read about the fight says the ring is 24 foot, plus the thing LOOKS 24 foot at least. Considering how well documented the 24 foot ring is, I'd say the onus is on the Lenny fans to prove it's less than 24 foot.
THIS. Howard Cosell was Ringside Calling the fight, yet his Assessment of the ring is Completely Glossed over. Surely, Cosell was made Privy to the size of the ring. Nonetheless, leave it to the Sack Swingers to comb the net for Other sources. Coming soon, irrefutable proof from a Deeep Throat informant, courtesy of onrobertoscock247.cum REED
Isn't Howard Cosell the guy who Tex Cobb wanted out of ABC, proclaiming that he would go another 15 rounds with Larry Holmes in order to get him out of MNF telecasts?
I'll take the IBHOF's word and everything else I've ever read about the fight's word, over ONE guy, who happens to love Leonard :laugh11:
