A classic lesson in how not to first underestimate, and then overestimate, a guys ability moving up through the weights.

He was divisions bigger and better than men divisions above him, and then suddenly seemed a division smaller and slower than Hopkins.

I don’t think Trinidad ever beats Hopkins, but I do think he moved up to 160 way too quickly. Never really gave himself a chance to grow at that weight.

Tito had the perfect frame for 154 lbs.

Well he destroyed Joppy, I think that's what caused them to think they had it at 160.
    Joppy was tiny.

I wonder if a Fernando Vargas has any abiding memories of Tito Trinidad.

    Probably not.

    Impossible.

Fernando's on the record as saying he has no memory of ever meeting him.

    Lol.

To this day he’s still crying about that fight.
The low blows, and he also accuses Trinidad of having his hands illegally wrapped, despite Robert Garcia(who observed the Trinidad hand wrapping) stating that it’s false.

But that kind of beating would hurt anyone’s feelings so I understand.

Vargas just has major major issues with being the man. He has to be the man. But I bet the Oscar loss hurts more

I'll have to go back and watch Tito vs Vargas at some point, but I remember thinking years back that Vargas holding a grudge over the low blows was a legitimate grievance tbh. My memory is very sketchy though. He was overcoming the shocking start and had worked his way back into the fight iirc despite mostly still being second best, a bit like Gomez against Sanchez, but Tito took a do-anything-to-win type attitude as I remember it.

Whenever I think about Trinidid I just think of the way he whipped that left hook to the chin, torquing his whole body like a screw from his toes to his wrist, while standing straight as an arrow. Hearing his name I just see that, over and over.. whipping left hooks to the chin of some poor dude unfortunate enough to get matched with him.

This is how I remembered it too but rewatching it, the low blow didn't seem to bad and I'm not sure it was intentional.

Vargas was landing a lot of low blows in that fight too. Landed low blows against Quartey and De La Hoya as well.

I respect Vargas but he is a bit of a cry baby.

Enduring memory of Tito was that left hook turning Vargas into a baby giraffe.

Second one was Hopkins knocking him out with a peachy right hook.

It was pretty much peak boxing, but I preferred the mania around Hakkar. We even had a Hotel Hakkar forum here briefly.

That's right, and gave Hopkins absolute hell by smashing his chin into Hopkins' jaw repeatedly
