Holding is a new phenomena. Ali never did it.

That knockout of Monte Barrett meant that much to you, eh?

As for the topic, I was gonna say something about improving the amateur program, but whatever. Jenny Craig works as well.

Very many of Ali's late career fights pretty much sucked as well. Had Ali always been like that, he wouldn't have gained that level of popularity. Earlier in his career he held very little

So you think there is no problem with the heavyweight division these days?

You can't outright ban holding because as you've said many times fighters just wind up in clinches without it being used as an intentional tactic.

However i think referees can be instructed to give stricter warnings and penalties on boxers that hold excessively and without just cause.

The manner of it, charisma and all did yes. He pretty much produced more entertainment with that one fight and everything surrounding it than anyone has since Tyson. In the Uk at least. That's a guy you could market as THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION world over and people would be interested.

You better market him quickly because his reign wouldn't last very long.

Yeah, probably not. I didn't predict success for him, I just said he was a chank of hope.

Ali's fights in his later years were boring az hll. His second fight with Frazier was horrible to watch.

The main problem with hw boxing these day's is lack of heart, and unfortunuately, their isn't much to do to improve it. Guy's like Sultan, Thompson and Chagaev, who, in the biggest fight of their life, fought just to survive, especially vs a guy who's chin and resistance to pressure as been exposed as Wlad ( yes , I know he's still an amazing fighter, but facts are facts ), is just abberant. Same for Peter, he talked a damn good game before facing Vitaly but fought like a gutless punk, he was basically a fat punching bag all night. Sure, holding should be penalized more frequently ( and I'm not talking about a clinch where bouth fighters are infighting ), if the ref would have started to took off points to either Rahman/Ruiz or to Wlad in pretty much any of his recent fights, I doubt the fights would have been as lethargic.

one thing that boxing should really consider adopting is allowing throw from the clinch, like in muay thai or K-1, would make the big lazy hw more reluctant to clinch

With the exception of the Williams fight, I'd say he was pretty dull to watch in most of his first title reign as well. In spots he was fun to watch in some of his other fights (Patterson 1).

He had more entertaining fights in his later years I thought, as he was more stationary.
