I'm always surprised at this being mentioned by so many as an all-time classic.

So many people claim that Mean Streets is overrated by film buffs, yet this movie is a fairly blatant ripoff.

The worst for me was Edward Norton, who is one of my favorite actors, but whose entire performance was lifted from - or at the most generous, inspired by - DeNiro's Johnny Boy portrayal.

First Rooster calls True Grit a great movie, now he's questioning the acting ability of Edward Norton? WTF!

actually, you're right, he does do a not-too-bad job in american history x. but in most of his stuff - fight club, rounders, red dragon, and that overegged monologue in 25th hour - the guy's just whiny and self-indulgent. it's like he's not even acting, more like a kid grandstanding in his high school play. has anyone ever got emotionally affected by an ed norton performance? do the feelings he's supposed to portray ever seem real?

    bullshit

this guy is not one of the great film actors. sean penn, pacino, de niro, p s hoffman, oldman, hopkins, spacey, day lewis, bale, christopher walken, jeff bridges - norton isn't in that league.

Well, leaving aside the fact that you and I differ on Norton's acting ability...

Reading back, I said that he was one of my favorite actors, not one of the greatest. Not really grounds for a debate, you know? I can understand if I said he was one of the best...

I will have to admit - Mean Streets is one of those movies I have never seen. I will definitely watch it now.

Maybe for me it is just personal bias. I love the movie, I think it is really well acted and as for Norton, having never seen Mean Streets, I have never wanted to literally kick the shit out of a fictional movie character as much as I did with Norton's character.
