dsimon writes: Ohhh baloney Sly! :nono: You are old enough to remember Tyson's image back then. Guys were pissing in their pants, getting knocked over with swats because they were so frightened he might come in for the kill and separate them from a few precious IQ points. Spinks was a guy who got by on guile and a few sweet moves at the opportune moments. He beat an aged Holmes and a few tomato cans... he was out of his element. It was like Burns facing Johnson. I think Jake is probably right that Spinks should have ducked Tyson so the fightbeat faithful could have argued who would have won in mythical match ups. Let me start the thread: "Tytson was tough but Spinks had the skills to stop him. Spinks slick boxing and ring smarts would have been too much for Tyson... its a good thing for Tyson they never fought.:: ::
That would definitely have been Broadwayjoe's position as well as a few other of the tyson's detractors. Personally, I always knew that Tyson woud remove Spinks from his unbeaten record in less than three rounds. The problem I have with Spinks, is that he showed no pride or self belief, especially considering all that he achieved up to that point. That's what's disgraceful.
To this day, when I say to people that I'm a boxing, someone alway's say's "Yeah,I don't watch sports that have people biting other people's ear's off":warning: Still to this day,Tyson was more harmful than he was helpful for boxing!!
Yep... That Bitch was Acutally LIFTED onto the Shoulders of his Handlers,AFTER WUSSing Out ... Then he Saluted the Crowd ... REED Doesn't Condone Hurling Objects @ Athletes or Performers, but this was 1 Instance where the Shit was WARRANTED... REED
Nice try at putting words in my mouth, Not-So-Sly one, but I was calling Tyson-Spinks a hideous mismatch as early as 1986 when Tyson won his first alphabet title and folks first started discussing that matchup. I NEVER thought Spinks could be competitive with Tyson, much less beat him. In fact (and I've said this type of thing on this forum more than once), I thought Spinks, despite being the real champ by virtue of his two wins over Holmes, was doing his best to avoid Tyson until the money was right 'cause he knew there was no way he could handle Tyson. And I've always objected to the Tysonhuggers who have attempted to elevate Spinks' status at heavyweight in order to create that great victory over a top flight opponent that is missing from Tyson's resume. So you're wrong yet AGAIN. Sorry about that. Better luck next time. You may want to print this out for the next time you choose to misrepresent me so you don't look quite so silly. Spinks was a great lightheavy...but he was merely a good heavy who took advantage of a faded champ in Larry Holmes and then milked his title reign as best he could while waiting for a big payday, and inevitable crushing loss, against Tyson.
Now that's Being HARSH,Dog... Spinks Admitted to Having Anxiety Prior to EVERY Fight,Not just Tyson...Spinks was Also UPFRONT about the FACT that he DISLIKED Boxing, but he wasn't Terribly Good @ Anything Else... Even though he was UNDOUBTEDLY Shitting Bricks During the Tyson Fight,Spinks DID Try to Land some Shots...It's Not like he Layed on the Ropes & Took a Pounding w/Out Throwing Anything Back Whatsover... Spinks took a VICIOUS Uppercut,Followed by a Flush Bodyshot from Tyson...THEN,Spinks Got Up,MISSED an Overhand Right & Got DRILLED... Fight Over.... Nathan "Disgraceful" about Spinks that Night...Tyson was just THAT MUCH Better...Spinks Wasn't a "Punk",Either:nono: ... REED
Briggs against Ibragimov. It looked like Briggs plan was to land a big haymaker with the first punch. Ibragimov ducked and Briggs quit. He could have left the ring after ten seconds. I woudn´t have missed him.
agREED. Spinks' peformance wasn't "disgraceful." He just got KOed by a much better fighter. To equate his performance against with Seldon's is just plain wrong. Could Spinks have done a better job preparing himself? Sure. But he was legitimately knocked out. He didn't quit like some of the other fighters mentioned in this topic.
Tyson was the single most important person in boxing for almost 20 years. To say he was more harmful than helpful is incredible. He brought in more fans, created more big fans, gave the sport more to talk about, etc. than any fighter besides Ali. I'm not saying he was a complete positive for the sport--he wasn't--but saying more harm than good is something I'm going to assume you don't even really mean.
I agree. I've never really heard this spin job going on in this thread before trying to make it out like Spinks disgraced himself. Spinks got his ass kicked...that's how it looked, that's how it has generally been accepted for 20 years. Did Patterson disgrace himself against Liston twice? Frazier disgrace himself against Foreman twice? No and no. That's right where Spinks belongs.
Okay,so if making hundreds of thousands fans leave the sport because of his ear biting spectacle! That alone did more damage to the boxing, than anything else ever did!!That had the same consequences as the walk out did for Hockey a few years back!! And being the daddy of the modern day overpriced PPV,then yes you go me!! You honestly don't think any of these things contributed to the reason for why boxing is in the shitter now?? Mainly in the US. Of course I speak of Post-Prison Tyson!! And yes,how can we forget about the new ADD generation of fans he brought in. The kind that STILL think Mike is gonna be the next HW Champ!! Or even better, they still think he is the champ::
Well I heard some casual fans at the bar during Mayweather-De La Hoya say it was the bite fight was the last big fight they really watched and they lost a lot of interest in boxing after that. Then again, Lewis-Tyson five years later sold almost as many PPVs as the bite fight and grossed more revenue, so maybe it didn't really hurt that much. It did provide a new type of unpredictability for people watching boxing (esp. Tyson fights).
