REED was 14 or So Himself, & Equally PUZZLED...

Drugs were "Bad", Something "Losers" Indulged In, Something "Goal Oriented" Sorts Veered AWAY From...Len Bias was Tall, Strong, Athletic, Talented, from a 2 Parent Upbringing, Respectful, Humble, etc, and had his Entire Future AHEAD of Him...Anything BUT the Type to OD on Drugs...Just Didn't Make Sense, or So REED Thought...

Len Bias' Death Impacted REED's Outlook on Drugs to the Degree REED's NEVER Tried Anything Harsher than Weed or Alcohol...If an Athlete of Bias' Caliber (who by Most Accounts was just a RECREATIONAL User) Could DIE from Hardcore Drugs, REED Wanted NO Parts of It....Magic Johnson's HIV Revelation Similarly Impacted REED's Outlook on Unprotected Sex...

Nope. Has nothing to do with that. I'm a lifelong Heels fan, with my UNC love peaking in the mid-to-late 90s. I was HEAVILY into college hoops in the 90s. I just found I Hate Christian Laettner to be underwhelming. Coulda been better.

C-Webb looked like a dick with the Ed Martin thing. They are all saying how Ed Martin just helped out poor kids and was like a father figure, then they cut to Webber looking smug in some interview and talking about how Martin was an old man who tried to exploit naive kids.

It was sort of funny when the one reporter said "Webber tried to act like some inner city tough guy but he isn't".

Although I have always thought Jalen Rose has this smugness about him.

On 1 Hand, Ed Martin DID Help Out Poor Kids and was Somewhat of a Father Figure...In Addition to Giving Webber's Family Upwards of $250,000, he Got Webber's Father a JOB @ the Ford Plant in Detroit...

On the Other Hand, Martin "Encouraged" EVERY Kid he "Helped", to Go to the University of Michigan (He was a BOOSTER), as Opposed to Michigan State and Other Schools...AND, 1nce those Players Went Pro, Martin Expected Kickbacks from Them...Things went SOUF' w/Webber and Ed Martin when Webber DIDN'T Pay Back Any of the Money he was Gifted, the Way Jalen, Mo Taylor, Tractor Traylor and Others Did...

Chris Webber WAS an Inner City Guy, but Obviously THE Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurthest Thing from "Tough"...He Received a Scholarship to Detroit Country Day, to Attend High School, Where he was BUSED to the Suburbs...He Caught Flack There for Being the Inner City Kid, THEN Caught Flack Back in his Neighborhood for Going to the "Soft, White School"...

It Explains why he's OVER Sensitive, Even To This Day...

Master manipulator. Bill Laimbeer didn't want to kick your ass. He wanted to make you want to kick his ass. And it worked...many times.

On a side note I heard Bill Laimbeer returned his scholarship money to Notre Dame. I heard his parents were doctors so he didn't need the scholarship money. I have to double check that.

The funniest part of a 30 for 30. On "The U" when they said not only did Jimmy Johnson not curtail the excessive celebrations of his players but he actually encouraged it. Jimmy Johnson in the locker room.

"When we score I want you guys to do them dances, like this one and this one." One of the players was like "Coach, damn, you need to work on your moves, man."

You see the ones on the Orlando Magic in the 90s and the one on Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry?

Both were pretty good, not amazing.

Yeah, just saw Doc & Daryl myself. Pretty good is what it was.

I felt more bad for those guys then anything. Doc is a literal shadow of himself nowadays.

Great coulda been stories in their time, but not necessarily compelling characters today. I thought the meeting between them in the present day diner was the weakest part of the piece.

Just seemed like a couple of old-time buddies who just didn't know what to say to each other anymore.

I see that one on all the time, and I can't bring myself to watch it. Chicago fans proved even worse then Boston fans from that incident.

I had already watched documentaries on both of them before (One doc called Starcrossed and also the Sportscentury episode on Darryl), so some of the stuff in the doc was familiar territory. The Sportscentury episode had one sports psychologist that put a ton of emphasis on the fans expectations of Strawberry being great being a huge trigger for him using. They also said he himself put the most pressure on himself to perform well.

Sometimes those "meet ups" for documentaries don't really work that well. I remember 30 for 30 doing an episode on No Mas and the big thing in the episode was Ray finally meeting face to face with Roberto to talk about the New Orleans fight. It seemed weak and also maybe too staged. I know Ray and Roberto have been friendly and respectful of each other for a long time, Duran even told Leonard "you can beat Hagler" after Duran fought Hagler in 1983.

But in the documentary Ray is like "I have to see Roberto and get this off my chest, I never got credit for making him quit, etc....". This topic never came up before?

The bit from Jon Stewart was good that fans feel cheated for not getting to witness them being great for longer, it maybe shouldn't be the fans' heartache to have.

During his brief peak, Gooden was perhaps as great as any pitcher ever (the numbers are just outrageous), I don't know though how much longevity he would have had even with a clean lifestyle. He pitched an awful lot of innings for someone in his late teens, early 20s, and it's often just hard for any pitcher to maintain that consistently. His numbers really declined once he had rotator cuff problems, and shoulder/arm issues can happen to any pitcher regardless of the lifestyles they lead.

    SMH at this:

"In a span of 50 starts from August 11, 1984, to May 6, 1986, Gooden posted a record of 37-5 with a 1.38 ERA; he had 412 strikeouts and 90 walks in 406 innings"

I liked the Orlando Magic one a lot. Shaq was my favorite player when he was there. Those were fun times.

interesting during this years playoffs or finals when van gundy relayed a story riley told him. apparently riley went to the same gym as al cowlings. cowlings told riley that simpson had him drive around so he could hear the end of the NBA finals game on the radio.

Yes. I'm not the biggest NBA fan but the Magic are my team. It was sad to watch that and think what might have been.

It's a damn shame about those knee injuries with Penny.

Penny in the 1997 playoffs, the first season without Shaq

You guys see the one on Phi Slamma Jamma? They've now had episodes on the winners and losers of that 1983 NCAA title game.

I always wondered if NC State-Houston in 83' was a bigger upset, or Villanova-Georgetown a couple years later. A little before my time.

EVERY kid wanted to be Penny at one point.

Circa 96-97 he was the 2nd most popular NBA player behind Mike.

I didn't catch the latest 30 for 30. "Catholics vs. Convicts." I'm sure they'll be replaying it over the Holidays.

I'm watching the latest one, "Best of Enemies", about the Lakers-Celtics rivalry. Alright so far, although they could have used better narrators than Ice Cube and Donnie Wahlberg. Cube was already a part of that shitty 30 for 30 episode a few years ago.

They went thru the 60s rivalry, which was cool. The 80s rivalry was already covered well on HBO's doc on Magic and Bird.

REED Would Say NC State Over Houston was the Bigger Upset...Houston was the BETTER, More ATHLETIC Team @ Every Position...

Their Coach, Guy Lewis, Made Some Head Scratching Decisions, Like Leaving Clyde Drexler in the Game to Pick Up his 4th Foul IN THE FIRSTfuckingHALF...

In the Case of Villanova-Georgetown, they were @ Least FAMILIAR w/Each Other, Having Played in the Big East Twice Prior to the NCAA Championship Game...They Also Had Ed Pinkney, who was a Beast in College and Probably the 2nd Best Player on the Floor...

As a Team, Villanova Shot an ABSURD 80% from the Field that Day...

REED's Watched it a Couple Times Already and Gives it a Solid B+...

They Glossed Over the Shaq-Kobe Championships and the 2 Laker-Celtic NBA Finals Meetings in the Post-Shaq Era...And Though they Spoke @ Length w/Jerry West about the PAIN of Losing to the Celtics Repeatedly, they NEVER Got his Thoughts on the Lakers FINALLY Getting Over that Hump, and What it Meant to Him Personally...

If REED's Not Mistaken, West was the GM when the Lakers Eventually Broke that Curse, but NATHAN from Him on What it Felt to WIN...

Cube was Definitely Trying to Be Tooooooooooooo "Hood" @ Times and Wahlberg Tooooooo "Southie", but they Didn't Do a "Bad" Job, Per Se...

I saw one of them the last time I was in the States. It was about a college basketball team, I know nothing about the sport but it was a brilliant watch, really enjoyed it.

Out of interest, if anybody saw the Hillsborough one, did it include the results of the inquest?

My biggest gripe is it didn't offer anything I didn't already know and like it was mentioned...most of it was a retread of the "Magic vs. Bird" documentary.
