Wasn't forgetting the context at all, nor did I say that his comp was better than Greb's. On any list of great comp though he measures well. Yes, McLarnin grew into a natural welterweight, but he was fighting Gold Medalist laBarba (who was good enough after the series with Jimmy to beat Genaro in his tenth/eleventh fight...I'd have to check)...anyways, Jimmy was a 17 year old kid during their first fight and was weighing in at what would today be jr. feather. By the time he got to guys like Petrolle and Thompson in '30, he was still only 23. Not to mention, he packed that all in to less than 70 fights.

    Yup.

Definitely Armstrong and Greb and Langsford are the absolute top 3....

But then you have McLarnin, Gavilan, Moore, Robinson, Charles...when thinking best quality of opposition, those cats definitely come to mind (along with Ali and the "top 3").

    Peace.

11th fight is when LaBarba beat Genaro.

To be fair, though - when McLarnin fought him (with 16 fights), LaBarba had only 1 pro fight under his belt and was 19 himself.

I mean, if you're going to look at McLarnin's resume like that, why not simply say that Ali's resume is better because he beat 50 guys who'd knock out everyone McLarnin ever faced?
