Simon, as a teacher of useless archaic martial arts, you of all people should know how technique's evolve.

I'm not calling Hasim Rahman some kind of technician by any means. But what you call savvy from Louis' opponents (excluding Charles and Walcott) I call slower, smaller, less athletic versions of Sinan Samil Sam.

I've been to your house. I've seen you "watch" fights. All you care about is what goes on over the computer, not what goes on in the ring.

You just called Billy Conn a "slower, smaller, less athletic version of Sinan Samil San. I mean, that screams, "I only watch Joe Louis while I'm looking up his opponents' records on Boxrec." Seriously, I hope you start watching boxing some day. It's a great sport.

I am sure an all time great like Joe Louis could capture a belt these days that should be out of the question i mean he basically lost once in his prime in what i would call a fluke as he annihilated Schmeling in the rematch. The other two losses came after his prime and still two all time greats were needed to to that.

That record for itself is just unreal considering most boxers around that time had like 10 losses or more...

Joe Louis is at at least the second best heavyweight of all time. Would he dominate today - i'm not sure but he could hang in there no doubt.

BUT then - you CAN'T go on here call Edvin Valero flawed in so many aspects of boxing and then hype up a guy like Galento who makes Valero look like like a prime Sugar Ray Leonard... you just CAN'T do that...

There are a lot of issues though Jaws, it is not a simple straight line of evolution. I am not getting into the polatized argument about Galenta... . But what you have to understand is that what a fighter fighting 15 rounds was evolving towards is different than what a fighter is doing to get better in todays style of fighting... a style which is more limited, and in which bigger gloves are used, etc.

And speaking of archiac martial arts Japanese Sword Arts stopped evolving some time during the Meiji restoration period because they were not used under combat conditions. So one can't look at modern KenJutsu and say it is the Zenith of swordsmanship any more than today's fighting men can be looked at as more evolved than a fighter from a bygone area. Not everything evolves the same way, at the same pace, under the same conditions.

And, while Rubio is using stronger language than I you really do have to know what to look for regarding fighting skills. Ask your brother if you don't believe me. There is a lot of subtlety you have to look for, things that don't show up on the tape, or that are not obvious on a tape. If you have ever been stalked by somoene in the ring like Louis it is a terrifying experience. my karate sensei used to fight like that. You really have to know what it feels like and how difficult it can be to fight against to understand why Louis was such a consistantly great fighter.

Trying to prove a point by acting like an idiot will only prove one point: that you're an idiot.

Agreed. Thats if you're going by what I'd consider amazing. I dont think any fighter in history has been capable of making jaws drop while watching them fight the way Roy did. Does that mean he was the greatest fighter ever? No, I'm not saying that. But he was the most talented fighter ever, and the things he did in the ring were awe inspiring, and "amazing". So I'd vote for RJ as well.

    Yeah, right.
When you get so far off of the beaten path of a thread to question identities here in a thread that has gotten so far off topic to turn to this kind of bs.
Back to the topic at hand, opinions?

BTW, to answer the thread's question...Muhammad Ali without a friggin' doubt, not even close.

The rest are just mere boxers, Ali is on another level altogether.

    I disagree.

I will say that Louis had a bunch of really jarring KO finishes in his Bum of the Month club. He would land shots that sent folded guys up in sections that normally didn't fold that way.

A few posts back, you said people should keep the personal attacks out of here. And I'm not instigating because you know I've always gotten along with you, Karl. :dunno:
