Terrance Crawford is better than Whitaker ever was.

Christ Almighty, that's a name I haven't heard in years.

Yeah, Mount Whitaker was a HORRIBLE fighter.

Remember when he changed his name to GOOFi?

Everybody started oohing and aahing when he effortlessly destroyed Maskaev in a couple of rounds, but that was the only time he ever looked like anything to write home about

He basically put Jameel "No Spine" McCline on the map by losing a decision to him, if memory serves

Destroying Maskaev is nothing to write home about. Oleg had a big right hand, but apparently he was a distant Russian cousin of Khan.

    Yup

His skills were solid and he could punch but his chin was incredibly shaky

I remember when he got knocked out by Corey Sanders, the 300 pound clubfighter (not Corrie the South African)... He was winning every minute and Sanders put together a combo and the fight was over

Maskaev had the look of someone whom you would intuitively expect to have a good chin... He looked Russian... dour, full of existential hatred and despair, someone who would pour some salt and ketchup on roadkill and eat it because there's a food shortage, after all... yet, his chin was that of a girl scout

I remember this vividly. A little earlier, after Whitaker had beaten Barret in a dreary fight, The Ring wrote "if he learned to punch more and slap less, he might become a useful sparring partner" or something very close to that. After he beat Maskaev, he was named fighter of the month by the same magazine, there was a four-page article of him and his 'effortless power' was compared to young George Foreman :l2:

The guy was a weirdo. He seemed to have a solid chin when he beat Rahman first time and walked through some useful opponents. Then he ran into a counter uppercut by Kirk Johnson and ever since he got kayoed by anyone who could tap his chin - apart of Rahman, whom he koed again. Maskaev was an amateur medalist and he was fed to a 21-0 Alexander Miroshnichenko in his first pro fight, yet he beat the guy in three

Man, Maskaev was fun. Took the hard way up, never protected. Wish the Gods hadn't planted his achilles heel on some random spot on his face, to be taken advantage of by some of the hapless dregs of the division.

That's absolutely right. He had that hard Russian look, and a nice, big, bulky Eastern Euro face. Really bizarre he was so chinny.

If Ward had to be placed in a category right now, I'd say he's right on the border of very good and great. If not great, he's in the upper echelon of very good. If he moves up to 175, and spanks Kov, then I'll OFFICIALLY label him great.

Hopkins, Floyd, and Roy are all time greats, which is a higher caliber.
