Tyson might have been remembered as the greatest heavyweight of all time, and a billionaire to boot, if he hadn't been so fucking stupid. Now he's a broke-down crackhead with a tattoo on his face looking at a long prison term. I call that a waste of talent. Tyson was as talented as Ali - maybe more - but he had none of the heart, the desire, the drive. Ali was the type of guy who'd do 10 miles of roadwork every day if the toughest guy in the gym was only doing five, just to make a point. Same with Floyd Mayweather. We know that he's more talented than anyone he faces, but the real killer is that he trains harder. Here are some more that deserve mentioning: Eduardo Lausse - Returning to South America prematurely. Tony Ayala, Jr. - Prison, idiocy. Billy Collins, Jr. - Blinded in a fight. Mike Tyson - Prison, idiocy, bad management, drugs. Jack Sharkey - Idiocy. Jersey Joe Walcott - A victim of the economy. Lloyd Marshall - A victim of the economy, the titles were frozen. Perhaps dealings with the mob. Sonny Liston - Illiteracy, the mob, in Ali's shadow. Sugar Ray Leonard - Ego, inactivity, injuries. Jose Basora - Overshadowed by LaMotta and Robinson, against whom he won and drew at one point. Charley Burley - Too talented, not flashy enough. Eddie Booker - Injured because some dumbfuck Panama-Lewis wannabe' sewed scissors in his opponent's glove, titles frozen. Jack Chase - Idiocy, criminal activities, titles frozen. Holman Williams - Titles frozen. Esteban DeJesus - Murder, AIDS, Roberto Duran. Jack Blackburn - Killed two people and went to jail, derailing his pro career. Later trained Joe Louis Aaron Pryor - Unable and unwilling to fight the best out there. Drugs.
Guys that have won championships, especially guys that have been undisputed like Zab Judah...are NOT wastes of talent IMO. Zab achieved as much as his potential. He may have faster hands than Floyd, for example, but he never had the "D" of a great fighter, not the chin, nor the ring smarts. It takes more than handspeed, footspeed and power to be great.
Lamont Pearson That guy had some good skills, but once he got outworked by Salido I pretty much knew whenever he'd step up he wouldn't be able to pull the trigger. The guy was visibly petrified of Casamayor back after his fight with Gutierrez, even though he started fighting late in life, the only reason he never reached his full potential was because mentally he would fall apart.
I'd wager Ricardo Williams. Let's see he had the talent to make a very respectable career and make good money. All he had to do was go in the gym and work on it but nah, that's too difficult, he'd rather hang on the corner and sell drugs because that's an easy gig. Long story short, he's locked up now.
he had all of that as an amateur, though. So much, that it was a huge upset that he didn't make the '96 Olympic team. Once upon a time, Zab was a complete fighter, but somewhere along the way as a pro, it got away from him.
Golota is my pick too. Some people just don't understand how great Andrew could have been...if only he had Holyfield's drive
Grant's problem wasn't only his chin though :nono: and Golota's problem was MENTAL so i'm not asking to replace any of his physical attributes..Golota was like a race car than needed a better driver...Grant was like a race car than needed a new engine, new filter, new sparkplugs, new battery..but it looked good in the showroom until you lifted up its hood
There's guys who underachieved due to laziness, psychologcial issues, etc...who still achieved a good deal. Guys like Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Hector Camacho Sr, James Toney, Wilfred Benitez, etc.... They still became world champions and they'll end up in the HOF (Bowe is questionable). I can't rank those guys as bigger wastes of talent than those who never got past the contender or prospect level, such as Tony Ayala, Ike Ibeabuchi, Ricardo Williams, etc....They're bigger wastes of talent IMO because at least the other guys reached the top before squandering so much of their abilities.
No, Golota was like a race car with bad steering. Being retarded is a part of who you are. Golota simply didn't have it upstairs. That's no different then having a bad chin or no punch. You can't ask for what you weren't born with.
