I would agree with this, but I have never heard any British media saying it. Never seen British fans saying it. Its like they would never say anything bad about their baby. Am I wrong here?
Both guys have valid points to make, IMO. Hatton obviously hates Junior and really doesn't want him (Witter) to make money off his back. Junior has an absolutely minute following (his mam and Attraction, basically) and brings absolutely nothing to the table at all except his WBC belt. There is no real general clamour for this fight over here because very few in the mainstream are even aware that Junior Witter exists, whilst Hatton is a household name even in those homes where no-one likes boxing. For all of that, if Hatton is serious about campaigning again at 140 and proving that he is still the best at that weight, he will have to fight Junior eventually, as he is the clear outstanding threat at 140 now. Only Paulie comes even close, and both Witter and Hatton would beat Paulie handily IMO. Even Rees won't be an option soon, because he is due to fight Kotelnik (a former Witter 'victim') next month and I can't see any way that Rees can win that fight. Then what- is Hatton seriously going to fight Kotelnik, a guy Witter already beat? I doubt it. I've said it before, Witter should force Hatton into fighting him by going to the states, knocking a few guys over and challenging Paulie. Once he beats him, he will effectively force Hatton's hand- not only will Junior be the undisputed champ (belt wise) at 140 but he should also get himself some sort of following and financial clout in the process. If Hatton doesn't come out then, then even I will accept that he is ducking him. One last point. I don't think the wait is doing Ricky any favours. If he'd taken this fight three years ago, I believe he would have won handily. Now, I'd still favour him, but the fight is more a 60/40 affair as Ricky may be have been in slow decline since the Tszyu fight (or at least is no longer improving) whilst Junior definitely IS getting better. If he tries to wait it out until next year, there would be a very good chance that Junior would beat him, which, after years of refusing him a payday, will put a large dent on his legacy. A very large dent. MTF
survey the british fans on this messageboard hatton-witter would get more british money and more british interest than any other hatton fight (except maybe for some freak fight like pacman) as for brit media - well either they report, rather than prescribe, or some of them have financial motivation for hatton fighting a low-risk opponent. you might run into some particularly vocal, whiney, myopic hatton nut-huggers on the internet, but these don't represent the majority of the british boxing-viewer public, who - for all their general ignorance - want hatton-witter.
witter's doing this - golden boy fight coming up. as for the semantics of 'ducking', well, let's just say this: there's no better fight out there for ricky, and yet he won't take it. for the mix of legacy, money, spectacle, winnability, there's no better fight right now than witter. so take it, ricky.
Believe me Rooster- the ONE and ONLY fight I really want to see at some stage this year is Hatton-Witter. I do actually think they'll get it on late this year as well, after a tune up or two and after Witter has won a couple over in the states.
Hatton needs to go ahead and dust Witter off regardless of how Witter has been so-called disrespecting him. What a better way to regain some of the steam that he lost against PBF. Not only that but if he wins he will make some good money and it will eliminate that buzzing noise in his ears. I'll Holla 5000
Although I believe Hatton might be ducking Witter, Witter needs to let it go and just focus on his career. Hatton's already gotten his 1st loss so even if Witter beats him at some point its lost some of its luster. Witter should just come to the states and fight here, it's not like he'd be losing any money in the process since he somehow has no following. So my advice to Witter is, just shut the fuck up and fight. There are other big names you could make money against even though it might mean moving to 147.
Exactly. But I've just looked at the boxrec schedules and low and behold Hatton is indeed looking to fight Witters sons son, Lazcano in Manchester. This fucking cunt has been pissing me off for years and this is the last straw. HOW THE FUCK CAN HE JUSTIFY NOT FIGHTING WITTER BUT FIGHTING HIS SONS SON INSTEAD?
I agree, Witter could make some decent coin fighting Paulie in MSG. If Witter unifies the titles he could actually set up something against Juan Diaz in a superbowl of abc titles:: But in all seriousness, Junior could make good money without Hatton. And if he did unify at 140, Hatton would have to fight him, there wouldn't be a question of ducking in that case. Junior needs to answer questions about Hatton as if he doesn't give a fuck anymore. Just say he's been calling Ricky out for years, when Ricky grows a pair, he knows how to pick up a phone. like I said, he just sounds desperate right now and Hatton knows it.
Dan (Nutley, NJ): Any updates on the Witter vs. Hopkins front? Dan Rafael: (1:09 PM ET ) The fight is off. HBO will instead show Andrade-Stieglitz 168 eliminator.
Witter - I accept Hattons offer Exclusive By Simon Parker Junior Witter today declared he would willingly take Ricky Hatton's "peanuts" offer for a May showdown in Manchester. Bradford's WBC light-welterweight world champion hit back after claims that he had rejected the chance to face the Hitman for £100,000. Hatton's manager, dad Ray Hatton, said yesterday they had offered Witter "the highest purse he'd ever had". But it had been turned down and the cash was no longer on the table. But Witter is furious and wants to pin down his deadly rival after years of ducking and diving - saying the fight is his only motivation not the wealth. "This is not about the money - it's personal," he blasted. "The pay-day is not even close to what I was getting for going out to America. "I would have got well over twice as much to fight Demetrius Hopkins over there. But I'm prepared to take it just to knock Hatton out for his cheek. "It might be all about greed with some people but not me. If that's what they think I'm worth then fine I'll take it just for the chance to finally put Hatton into retirement." Hatton is expected to face Texan Juan Lazcano in his comeback fight after losing to Floyd Mayweather in December. Lazcano has been out of action for a year since a defeat against Vivian Harris, who Witter viciously KO'ed in seven devastating rounds five months ago. Ray Hatton claims a "gentleman's agreement" is in place although Witter's promoter Mick Hennessy understood Lazcano had not signed his contract. Hennessy said: "I spoke to Golden Boy Promotions in the early hours today and they told me that the Lazcano deal was not done yet. "So my understanding is there is no contract signed between the two; the venue is not sorted as of today; HBO (American TV giants) have not confirmed they are covering it and it's not the fight the paying public want to see - which is Witter v Hatton. "Junior is happy to jump in and take up their peanuts offer because he isn't greedy." Hennessy claimed Hatton's lawyer Gareth Williams had said that if the fight did ever come off, Witter "would not get a penny over £100,000 because that is all he is worth." Witter's manager John Ingle spoke to both Williams and Ray Hatton today. Williams confirmed that the offer mentioned was for May 24 but Hatton said it was never for that date. "Maybe Floyd Mayweather hit Ricky Hatton that hard even his dad and lawyer are confused," laughed Witter, who is currently warm-weather training in Gran Canaria. Witter was due to defend his title in California next month against Hopkins but that fell through after the American pulled out for no apparent reason. Now he is desperate to take out his frustration on the man he has been stalking throughout his career. Ingle said: "I can understand their reluctance to take the fight because (trainer) Billy Graham's record against us in major contests isn't very good. "Alan Bosworth beat Matthew Hatton, Johnny Nelson finished off Carl Thompson's reign as champion and Andrew Facey took Matthew Macklin's unbeaten record. "The only major win Billy has got over us was Ricky Hatton against Jon Thaxton. But Thaxton has proved since then that he's not a real light-welter by going back to lightweight. "Ray Hatton says they are tied up for the next 12 months with a deal with HBO, who've got a list of opponents. But how can Junior not be on that list? "We've been told that he is and that's the fight that HBO want to see. It's a travesty if it doesn't happen."
"This is not about the money - it's personal," he blasted. "The pay-day is not even close to what I was getting for going out to America. "I would have got well over twice as much to fight Demetrius Hopkins over there. But I'm prepared to take it just to knock Hatton out for his cheek. WILL HATTON CONTINUE RUNNING NOW???????
Because there was never an offer on the tables. Witters promotor approached hattons lawyer who said that if they were EVER going to fight, witter should expect no more than 100k because thats all he is worth, (Witter accepted 150k in the past and now that he has a belt he is accepting much less, goes to show that he actually WANTS the fight.) Well witters promotor said that he should show some more respect for junior who has done things the hard way and ducked no one. The hattons decided to try to gain one upmanship by releasing to the press that witter turned down an offer etc. BUT THEY HAVE NOW HAD THEIR BLUFF CALLED!! Wait and see them weasel their way out of it.
Junior Witter Probably DOESN'T Realize this, but there Actually R OTHER Fighters N the World, Besides Ricky Hatton... Instead of ALLOWING his OWN Career to Revolve AROUND Ricky Hatton, Witter SHOULD B Doing what he Can IN THE RING, to Make it IMPOSSIBLE for Hatton to Avoid him... Antonio Tarver Should B the EXAMPLE that Witter Follows...Even During the 1996 Olympics, ALL Tarver Ever Wanted was a Fight w/Roy Jones...So He Fought who he HAD to Fight, Rematched Guys, KO'ed Guys, WHATEVER it Took...Roy was his ULTIMATE Goal, but Tarver KNEW he Had to Follow a PATH to Get There... Witter Could Learn ALOT from Tarver's Persistence... REED
I agree Witter should move on to other fights. He can clean up the divison and still wouldn't land the Hatton fight. Still doesn't change the fact that Hatton is avoiding him.
Indeed :bears: Tarver might be annoying as fuck, but he's nowhere near as pathetic as Witter. He worked hardcore to get his shot at Roy.
Agreed. But at the same time, Hatton's ducking has become apparent at this point. I dont buy the Hatton groupies claiming Ricky just doesnt wanna give Witter a payday. I think its bullshit! Malignaggi talks more shit about Hatton than anyone else in the division, yet Ricky has no problem giving Paulie a payday. Hatton dont want it with Witter. But in the mean time.... Witter should fight someone like Torres.
REED Certainly ISN'T Ruling this Out, Brother X... That's ALL the MORE Reason why Witter Should Clean House AROUND the Division, Leaving Hatton NO CHOICE but to Fight him... REED
REED will defend Hatton becasue he is doing basically the same thing Mayweather is doing with Cotto. Not facing the top guy in the division. :tease:
I must concede, though I never believed it before, it does seem like Hatton simply doesn't want to fight Witter. Which is odd seeing as he fought Floyd, and was clearly not scared of Floyd at all. But I guess he knew that if he lost to Floyd, it wouldn't really matter much, Floyd is P4P #1 and it was a welterweight fight. A loss to Witter would be far more damaging to Hatton's rep and legacy. I still think he'd bash Witter though. Witter is a little better than I thought. Good enough to batter Harris, but then again so is Maussa so that's not saying much.
Sure, REED Is Affording Hatton THE SAME Luxury he's Affording Floyd...That's Only FAIR, Right???:dunno: Actually, REED Cuts Hatton MORE Slack N NOT Facing his Top Contender Right Away, Given what Happened N his Last Fight.. "However", REED has Made it CLEAR that Floyd MUST fight Cotto EVENTUALLY (2009 @ the Absolute LATEST, but Preferrably EARLIER)...Ditto for Hatton...He MUST Fight Junior Witter EVENTUALLY... If Floyd-Cotto or Hatton-Witter NEVER Materializes, REED'll Stand N Line to CRITICIZE Floyd & Hatton, No Doubt... REED
imagine in the next 8 years, hatton continued to avoid witter. It's 2016 and the fight still hasn't happened. Imagine that. Well, that is how I feel. I have wanted to see this fight (and witter has been calling him out since that time), but Hatton has continually ducked junior. I KNEW how good junior was, when others laughed me off the boards. So it's harder for me to forgive hatton for his BLATANT ducking than it is for others.
but reed, witter is doing this. in between fights he continues to ask for a fight with hatton, but he's still pursuing the biggest fights available. "Make it IMPOSSIBLE for Hatton to Avoid him..." - it already is as impossible as it could be, and yet hatton still won't fight. (truth is, boxing is so sick, you can't 'force' anyone into anything, especially not euro-duckers)
