I've been a fan of Witter's for a while now, so I'm glad he won. I don't know what's wrong with Harris, but he is nowhere near the same fighter he was three years ago. Harris makes 140lbs fairly well. He shows up well under.
why was harris highly touted in the first place? I remember watching him fight ubaldo hernandez and thinking that he wasn't very good. he beat a shaky chinned hurtado in 2 rounds, squeeked by urkal in their first fight, looked sluggish in the rematch until the stoppage, then he got knocked the fuck out by a journeyman. oh yea, he also beat m'baye, but that was hardly impressive. i dont know, harris looked like a fierce fighter at times, but the guy has never put on a consistent performance against world class opposition.
You can tell from watching Harris that he is well schooled and possesses class. At times he can offer cameos of sheer brilliance, perfectly balanced punching and perfect poise. However, these cameos are interlaced with monotonous and sometimes lethargic movements and this is because he isn't mentally strong I believe. He should read the Masterkey System by charles Haanel.
i guess. i never thought harris was that good. let's face it, about 2 years ago he got knocked the fuck out by a cyclops named maussa. still, witter looked very good in dispatching a guy many picked to win. he also looked a lot better than he did against chop chop. i guess he can fight a tune up and hope for hatton would lose in december. if hatton somehow wins vs. mayweather, i highly doubt witter would get his shot.
some people havent seen the witter judah fight. here it is. it's the first time i've watched it with the showtime commentary and i can understand the negative perception of witter. so far i';ve only watched the first 4 rounds. the first is debatable but witter WINS the next 3 clearly and is confusing Judah. junior had 4 KO's in 15 fights! and was taking this fight at 9 days notice. a complete novice.
what did you think of witter's performances against Kotelink and Lynes? Malignaggi also beat N'Dou much much easier than Witter did.
I was saying the same thing over the weekend. Witter did a lot to make a Hatton showdown that much more relevant, but it goes out the window if Ricky somehow beats Floyd. The fight is obviously that much more attractive, but a Hatton win also means his asking price goes WAY up, meaing Junior would have to settle for peanuts (and further anonymity) in order to secure the fight. If/when Ricky loses to Floyd, then there's little excuse left for him to NOT fight Witter. Unless of course Ricky decides he likes the paydays at 147 (even if it means more L's on the record) more so than reigning supreme at a less lucrative 140.
after he loses to floyd, i'd much rather see hatton vs. witter than hatton vs. anyone at 147. until recently, i've been saying that hatton vs. witter would be the british version of Chavez-Camacho. now, i actually think witter stands a chance of winning.
At first, I thought Junior was indeed limited but on rewatching and after talking TO junior about it and watching several of his other fights, I think that for the kotelnik and lyons fights Witter was doing just enough to win. Regardless of what anyone says, if you are objectively looking at those fights, Witter WON the fights. And it was a great thing that he actually went the distance because he was learning to pace himself better. On face value they are poor performances. He should have bombed out Lyon. I DO think that kotelnik is actually very good, but it was clear that witter is miles better. The problem Witter had against Noud was that he actully broke his hand during the fight. He was all over Noud in the early stages and the hand went and he had to coast along. He was in agony to be honest, but it's all cleared up now, and he DID beat Noud handily. Witters been training for increasing his stamina for a long time now and he feels he can pace himself well in fights. Try throwing punches as HARD as he does for 12 rounds... it's impossible. So Witter is now pacing himself very well and can do the rounds no problem. I look back on those fights and I understand the criticism. But I excuse the Noud fight because of the broken hand. Kotelnik is a good boxer and did the right think by going into a shell for the first 6 rounds and basically giving them away and tehn coming out of his shell. good strategy. i think kotelnik will do very well in the future. all in all though, Junior is much better after those fights and is glad they happened like that.
the Lynes fight was tough to watch. Lynes clearly just showed up looking to do no better than last the distance. Where Witter deserves blame, though, is allowing it to happen, and as you said, just doing enough to win and no more. He claimed afterward to have been disinterested in what he felt was an unnecessary fight, though that contradicted his pre-fight insistence of needing the fight to stay busy. He looked good against Chop Chop until Chop completely bitched out. He got hurt I think in the 5th and then all but stopped fighting from the 6th round on. Again, though, Witter seemed content with allowing the fight to develop into a posing match. He looked very good in the first half, then did next to nothing in the 2nd half. Fortunately it was enough, as Corley did absolutely nothing. Even with the broken hand, I thought he looked better against N'Dou than he did against Kotelnik. Though you may be correct in your assessment of the latter, perhaps suggesting (not to put words in your mouth) that Junior took him lightly. Kotelnik is a tough out for anyone, but will wind up declining before securing another fight with a major player at 140. A shame, as he deserves better, and Junior's win over him might not look as impressive as it should in the long run.
yea corley and witter started break dancing after the 5th round. i stopped watching after round 7 or so and fast fowarded through. corley (who is a very strange fella) told me that the cards were fixed and that it was actually a split decision.
Have you seen Harris against JL Juarez? It is a war in the truest since of the word...every bit and more compared to ward gatti. Then follow that up with Hurtado, M'bay, urkal, urkal...it's a nice stretch and it legitimized Harris in my eyes, at least. Then he chokes against Maussa, but comes back with a couple more decent wins until Witter. Harris is at least decent. Witter is just better.
Harris used to die making 140. Manny said he was light headed climbing into the ring vs Urkal, thats how much he had killed himself. He doesn't drop weight well, and he doesn't travel well. And Witters camp knew this. Clever piece of matchmaking.
Hurtado was a nearly man. M'Baye already lost to Kotelnik and somebody called Gavin Rees. A fucking loser. Urkal...tuff, but a bit limited. Then he lost to Maussa. Now he loses to Witter. Frankly, my dear, when it comes to Harriss, i don't give a damn.
Agreed. That's been my take as well. But he's always had mental flaws (consistency and focus)....and I personally think the strain of making 140 has really told. Plus, Viv tends to over-train and go hard in the gym...maybe in an effort to make the weight. The fact that he shows up under is telling. Peace.
