listen, nobody gives a fuck about Wlad/Haye, outside of some limeys who would cheer for fucking ANYBODY with an English accent... to the rest of humanity, it was just another ho-hum boxing match, no one had any great interest in seeing Haye win, nor did they expect him to.

I don't know anyone with even marginal knowledge who thought Haye would win. The fight got press because the challenger had a big mouth, happens a lot throughout the history of the sport. Don't confuse "hype" with "this is a matchup everyone is salivating over"

No one with a brain cared if Haye won or lost, no one with a brain thought it was a meaningful or important fight... it has no singificance to anyone outside of England

 

for the record, I was glad Wlad won because Haye was a hype job with a big mouth and nothing more. I like when big-mouthed idiots like him look like fools meekly losing decisions

Look at the context: in the depth of an economic recession, 10,000 Brits all pile into vans and schlep their way to Germany, like Peter the Hermit en route to Jerusalem, to hopefully see a guy that they didn't know of, lose.

HBO had not been televising Wlad. And for the Haye fight they changed that tack. Why did they change it? They realized they could sell something. Sell the concept that, as it were, Wlad's Zeit War Um....his time was up. People believed he could lose, and wanted to watch. Simples. If HBO had refused to broadcast the fight in the USA then would find it more plausible that nobody in America cared. They cared alright for this one, otherwise the fight wouldn't have been available for purchase.

 

But so does Wlad.

The British obsession or vendetta or whatever it is against Germany (or guys who are seen to be German by association, like the Klits), nobody in America is even aware of it... so what you read in the british papers is not found on these shores... I'd be surprised if there was even a story about David Haye in any major newspaper over here, perhaps a small paragraph indicating the match would be taking place, buried 5 pages into the sports section

If you think David Haye is someone Americans, even American fight fans, care about, you are sorely mistaken... If David Haye had been the same exact fighter but with a milquetoast personality, I doubt HBO gives a shit

 

Everything Wlad has accomplished counted for nothing if he lost that fight. He had every reason to fear defeat, and yet, when the crunch came, he was the only one trying to make the fight. In and out of the ring, he tried to make the fight.

Now, a guy who fights as often as he does deserves some credit. He keeps the thing moving, ticking over.

I posted about a guy who had a kidney stone removed 8 days before a fight and the responses made did not even begin to touch on the express subject matter, they just immediately assumed the same old, tired jilted tilt.

They cashed in on the transient belief/hope amongst American fans that Haye could beat Wlad.

 

No, the responses were an accurate measure of how fight fans ought to feel about a giant who fights like a scrawny midget, a guy with a crystal chin and undescended testicles... as pointed out, some of the most vehement anti-Wlad guys among us all have generally positive things to say about his big brother. People don't dislike Wlad because he's a big white guy from Kiev or wherever, they dislike him because he fights like a more physically gifted John Ruiz... that said, I would root for RUIZ over David Haye, never mind Wlad

 

Dude the last time we saw you, you were surrounded by the sum total of 2 people, 60 homeless dogs and 20,000 Square Kilometers of frozen tundra.......Scott and Amundsen have a better shot of hearing about Haye.

Thousands of people were fascinated to see Clay/Liston I, most figured Clay would be annihlated and people were interested in seeing this brash kid get skullfucked... They weren't watching because they thought Cassius would win, they wanted to see HOW we would lose... the same applies to Haye, only on a WAY smaller scale

 

That's a case which could be made, for sure. Now let's say that only 1/4 of the people in the USA bought the Haye vs Wlad fight wanted to see Wlad lose, and believed he would lose.....that's still a fair few people.

 

They put the money up for Haye because they knew he'd talk some trash during Face Off to get people interested. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure HBO brass had their fingers and toes crossed he would win because he'd be as easy sell as heavyweight champion.

But picking up that fight was all about trying to get people to switch to their channel the afternoon of the fight.

Wlad could do 20,000 in MSG every month, just off the back of the ethnic sub-groups in New Jersey and New York alone. Vitali and Arreola did 2 million on HBO. And if Adamek vs Vitali was in the USA, HBO would have been all over that too.
